After playing MGS4, I felt inspired by the game's story elements to ask this question of what sort of story elements do you want to see.

Depending on what Mass Effect (4) is going to be about I would like to see certain story elements that are a bit more personal and a bit more realistic. Basically I would like to see a change from the "Save the Galaxy"  plotline, ME3 had certain themes such as "Organic vs Synthetic" (that would be classed as save the galaxy) but instead something more like "Union vs Independence". For example, a collection alien races from different star cluster has ingnited a rebellion against Citadel Space wishing to push back Citadel Space and create its own rules and regulations. Dragon Age 2 sort of went in this type of direction. I like to see themes that relate to Soldiers manipulated by politicians, and moral implications of serving as a soldier of the Alliance. Expand on Politics, ethics and effects of warfare on people.

I hope to see it in Mass Effect and I hope it could entertain the fanbase as well. That's my idea, what is your idea?

I'm a huge sucker for the morally gray kind of enemy. The kind of enemy who's hated, fought against, oppresses the heroes, but is doing it to save the world/galaxy.

Maybe I played World of Warcraft a bit too long, but I enjoyed how both the Horde and Alliance hated each other (even the playerbase would have an innate dislike for the other side), but they both had heroes, villains, and fought for something larger than themselves. The relationship was strenuous, sometimes allying themselves to fight a bigger threat, sometimes skirmishing, stabbing each other in the back, heroically uniting to defeat an enemy, etc. Allignment changed from person to person. It wasn't just in the story - players themselves would occasionally help the other side to tackle a big quest boss, or they'd try to see if they could kill them at the last second just because they weren't on their side. It wasn't for the points - it was a matter of principle which differred from person to person.

I think something similar could be done in ME. The alliance between the races becomes strenuous, and while they're all "good guys", you can only side with so many at once, and even the ones who try to kill you aren't doing it for the wrong reasons.

Imagine - after a long 1v1 with a Batarian who just jumped you, you have him on the ground. He asks you make it quick, but you might either spare him or kill him. Though he said he wanted to kill you for the money, you later find out he was the son of a general, who's getting back at you for indirectly causing the death of his father. If you killed him, later in the game when you ARE allied with the Batarians, you find they are mourning the loss of the general's son whose fate only you know (in this case, the 'renegade' option of keeping silent may be the more graceful). If you spared him, he comes back and tries to kill you again once he's gotten much stronger, and should you lose, he decides to spare you, showing that he has a sense of mercy as well.

Again, I'm a sucker for an opponent who's also doing the 'right thing', but is still pitted against you.

I like it best when more complexity is added to the enemy rather than just a simple straight forward evil with no redeeming features such as mercy and honor. I hope that once the Reaper story is completely done with, I'd like ME to take a similar line with Metal Gear Solid in terms of tone and themes. As well as making the antagonist have another side to them.

There's been talk of a non-military protagonist. If that ends up being the case, I'd like the protagonist to be some sort of mercenary or freelancer/smuggler (think Han Solo). Adding to that concept, I'd love to see RPG elements added to your ship, as well as your character/squadmates. ME2 dabbled in ship upgrades that affected story elements, but they were very general in nature.

I'd also like to see some more diversified skill trees (though the 2-branch, 3-step evolution in ME3 was a good start).

Lastly, I'd like to see them move to a completely different quadrant of the ME universe so that we could have an epic, galaxy-wide story without any "bleed over" from the prior choices. It would also allow the introduction of new races, while still preserving the old favorites. New races, even a more detailed re-introduction to the Yahg, would be a huge plus for me.

Believe it or not, I think it could actually benefit from a story similar to the one told in DA2, tonally speaking. I know a lot of people didn't particularly care for the actual game, but the core ideas were sound. Play as a nobody (perhaps even a survivor of the Reaper War) trying to survive in a world that starts being torn apart by the alien races we know and love going at each other's throats for whatever reason (most likely the result of fallout from ME3). As an above poster said, the more grey morality the better.
On the gameplay side, if they made ship-to-ship combat playable, I may very well just explode with happiness, although I don't know if anything could possibly EVER make me as happy as the thought of piloting the Normandy. I suppose that ship has sailed, though.

I actually think it'd be kinda cool to have a single, persistant rival character that you interact with. Maybe not an enemy that you're supposed to kill, maybe someone working towards the same goal as you that you're trying to outdo or they're trying to outdo you?
