I decided to roll my first badass male warrior only too find out that my father, calls me "Pup",  "Pup" ffs. Granted i can see this dialogue working if my chosen character was female, even if she too was a badass - whole father daughter thing etc. But form an RPing perspective it's cringeworthy and totally destroys any immersion whilst interacting with the father.

I thought it reinforced the line that Fergus is the heir, and you are the spare. He's doing the marrying, fighting and making cousland babies, and you're just hanging around the castle with your pita wardog; it's only once frankenfurter's plan kicks off that the human noble character actually gets a chance to define who they are.

Oh well, now imagine this badass human warrior with the cool Grey Warden eyes on the "Sacred Ashes" trailer. Pup, haha. :)

I believe that word is meant to reveal Bryce's character, rather than your own. The Teyrn strikes me as a man who would show affection even towards a bad-ass son, which is what "pup" stands for. He would reprimand the son in question, but still care for him and show it. You do have several options to role play a nasty human noble, if you chose your lines in that direction, but no matter the PC, my two cents go to Bryce Cousland remaining what he is at the core: a loving, dedicated father. :)

While I don't think calling any man "pup" regardless of bad ass or not is a good thing, I just ignored it and moved on with the game

Agreed with jsachun's first sentence and Songlian's post. Bryce calls you Pup as a term of endearment. A loving nickname if you will. Dogs are highly valued in Ferelden and an important part of their culture. Pup fits as a Ferelden nickname; and given how respected dogs are there, it is obviously meant to convey affection.

Well, first off, no matter what you might  think, your Level 1 warrior is NOT a Badass.... not yet at least.

On the other hand, Your Dad, the Teryn of Highever, is an Orange-ranked Boss  with a lifetime of Battle  experience under his belt.    He can indeed call you Pup, because that's exactly what you are  compared  to him.

Ridiculous statement to make. "Your level 1 warrior is NOT a badass".

Mate, he's anything i want him to be. After all, like any decent RPG your self imposed characters' background is as real as the dragons or ogres you fight, especially if you've taken the time out to create the character yourself. Whether he's lvl 1 or lvl 25 is neither here nor there.

Yeah, I've got one intended playthrough where my human noble is going to totally ignore the whole Origin side to it and they will be a 'Chasind Barbarian'

Female Rogue wielding a 2hander wearing only leather boots, gloves, helmet, chasind robe, rings, amulet and belt.

Shame won't get any odd looks/comments from Alistair [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie] but hey-ho

As long as the boots have high heels and you wear dark lipstick, cool.

My thoughts, exactly. After doing the Dwarf noble origins story, which to me is one of the coolest storylines of the game, I decided to try a noble human tank, tatooted his face black, and called him Masseur, only to find out that my father, the second most noble guy in the kingdom, calls me pup in front of that baddass Howe.

After seeing my dwarven subordinate asking me "Do you want this pathetic commoner to die for daring to address Your Majesty," this human cuddliness seemed to be begging for extermination. I was kinda happy Howe wiped the lot out. Whatever was that family doing in that blighted world? Pup.

Anyway, whoever hasn't tried the Dwarven noble origins story, go do it. It is really great roleplay through and through, and has a very real feel to it once you come back to Orzammar.

Actually, the hypersensitivity to the name is what declares that, despite how you want to portray him, he's a whiney ass teenager.  Considering the fact that it doesn't matter if you're male or female, you get the same nick, it's really not poorly implemented.  However, if we take your forum name into consideration, Pup is an upgrade.

No, of course not. Swooping is bad.

Yes! She is going to swoop down upon Alistair when he least expects it and teach him all about the birds and the bees.

Anyway least she will be more clothed than my 'Spartans' playthrough (PC, Sten, Alistair and Oghren haha)

Your level 1 character is a badass. That's why they're recruited into the Grey Wardens. You don't "actually" become 20x more powerful over the course of the game's events. Levels are a mechanic and nothing more.

I mean, when a game has level scaling, you can't really argue that the levels reflect the reality.

That said, I'm not sure what's wrong with the "Pup" nickname. The Cousland character is Bryce's beloved youngest child, no matter how great his/her prowess. Your character doesn't have to like the nickname, of course....

Even though Fergus is the eldest, the grapevine (if you quiz Darrien with "What have you heard about me?") has it that your character is the one who will be succeeding Bryce as Teyrn.

Given they way power is "handed up" in Ferelden, I'm guessing that the Banns sworn to Highever get to select their next Teyrn from among the Cousland heirs. (Reflecting the way in which the Landsmeet selects the monarch)

That said, it does seem Bryce has Fergus in mind, given the way your last conversation with him can go.

Trouble with that Ulicus is, if the human noble is considered one of the best fighters in Highever and Bryce has Fergus in mind to takeover when he passes, why is the human noble left at Highever and Fergus off to do battle? Wouldn't it be the other way around in that situation? Fergus left at Highever to see how good he is at the job, whilst us off to prove even more so how good a fighter we are?

Am I missing something?  While I personally appreciate good massage skills, I didn't think they were generally perceived as highly masculine.

I didn't see anything wrong with the nickname. It's cultural slang relevant to Fereldans, who value their dogs almost above all else. This was a great bit of flavor, IMO. And since your human noble grew up in this culture, he shouldn't get offended. Instead, it's actually a compliment.

Besides, Dog can be highly effective in combat, so don't take it as an insult to your badassery.

Frankly until they come up with a way to synthesize your name phonetically into speech, you either have to go by some nickname or get called Gray Warden by everyone.

I pity the OP who can't understand why a parent might call their youngest child by a term of endearment, it speaks poorly of his own family environment.

*hugs OP* It'll be better soon, someday someone will like you enough to call you pet names too!
