It says I can map a power but dosen't tell me which button to press to use it. I tried to google the instruction manual and the control layout for the PS3 but came up empty. I would like some help.

hold down R1 to bring up power wheel, there should be a legend that tells you wich button (I believe it is the square button) to press to map a power to R1. Then you can press R1 button and it will do that power. In ME1 you can only have one power mapped. L1 will automatically switch weapons if you press and not hold.

Thank you sirus1988 I thought I was going crazy. I'm enjoying Mass Effect even if it is the worst game in the series control, gameplay wise.

no problem. Yeah, the combat controls have not aged well in ME1. It is still a ridiculously fun game. Some advice, map a defensive power. The attacks don't really lock on well to enemies (especially if they move quickly). It's best to map a defense power (immunity, barrier, etc), and then use the power wheel to pause game and execute precise attacks on enemies.
