Male or female characters?

I'm a guy purely playing men. It's easier to identify with male characters, besides I wouldn't feel comfortable playing females when romance is such a focal point (I could of course ignore the romances, but I would be missing out).

I find it interesting and a little telling that the ten or so first replies after the initial post was made by female posters (or posters at least at times playing female characters). I doubt it's a statistical anomaly, but rather a reflection of females being a great deal more self-assertive when it comes to gender related issues in the predominant male gamer environment.
I think you are 100% correct there.

I do have more trouble coming up with names for female characters, though. Partly because I dislike names that end in vowels.

For most games there's still no choice.SarEnyaDor wrote...
Well, for so long when we played games we DIDN'T have a choice, the main character was always male and predetermined ( I know, I'm aging myself here).

Usually I also don´t buy games where I can´t change gender (Legacy of Kain was an exeption f.e.). RPGin is not real roleplaying for me, but sending some facets of myself to another world.. and being male is uninteresting for every facet I know.^^

Hey, I was just curious about how many people create characters of the opposite gender? I have both male and female characters and just wondering how many of you do as well. Thanks!
I'm a woman and my first character was a male elf. When I finished the game I started it again with a female character - human - but left her there at Ostagar and did my second playthrough with a human male.
In theory I like the fact that I could choose to play with a woman and "indentify" with her or something... don't know, maybe if there was some interesting romance option for a female character I would be more willing to play the whole thing with a PC of my sex!
(I know, I guess there are "interesting" options for someone, it's just that I'm not really interested in... whoops are the romanceable characters considered spoilers?

I've been playing Divinity 2, and was overjoyed to see an 'illusionist' partway into the game that allows you to change your appearance and sex because i really don't want to play the game twice, it is repetitive enough already. I was disappointing to realize, however, that gender makes no difference in that game at all.

In all RPG lately, my PC is a small female (when there is a choice) -- based on my wife's size, appearance, IQ to the degree the game allows. She's actually 5' tall and small but very athletic. So, the smaller elf-mage or an elf-rogue can fit perfectly -- a plus for DAO vs other games.
But, I do not role play a female or my wife. Rather, I role play a "supernatural entity" watching over her and helping her use her immense talents to succeed. This role allows me to "cheat", mod the game, hack the code and remain in character.

I play both but I prefer female, Idk something about looking at nice curves for 40+ hrs is better then bulging muscle.
I'm male.
The majority of my characters have been female.
One reason is the quote, above. Women are just so much easier on the eyes. Also, I'll admit that having grown up in games where the protagnoist is always male, being able to break that mold and go female and have that choice matter is a large incentive to play, just to see how different it is.
I'm one of those sorts that likes having options available.

That is sooooooo cool! I've got to try this, my wife is small and really smart too. I also have been known to lean towards an ocasional hak, (wink wink nod nod say no more).
I've always considered my In Game character as a ported version of myself, so therefore I've always played male characters.

Both. Depends on the concept I have for the character when I create it.
This is what I do too. I come up with a character concept in my head. The concept usually tells me what the gender will be. I've finished with a male elf mage. And I have 1 male human noble, a male dwarf noble, and a female elven mage right now. I'm also thinking of playing a female human rogue. The only origin that doesn't interest me is the dwarf commoner. I may play it once to unlock the achievement. But otherwise it doesn't do anything for me as a character. But any of the others I can play and either gender is interesting to me.

In Oblivion I tried making a character that looked and acted like my girlfriend at the time with the same level of intelligence She got killed by the first rat because she couldn't figure out how to draw a weapon for 5 minutes, then kept getting drunk and walking into walls.
So...I have a different girlfriend now....:innocent:
