I'm male and pretty much always play a female when I have the choice. My current one is my avatar, btw. :D There are two main reasons for this. First of all, there aren't many non-RPG games that let you choose a female character, or god forbid only let you play a female. Right now I can think of Tomb Raider, Paraside Eve 2, Dino Crisis (both on Playstation), Phantasmagoria and Giana Sisters (on Nintendo DS). That's about it, and I'm including all consoles and systems since Playstation 1. There are probably more, but I can't think of any. Of course you can choose a female in many games, but be forced to play as one? Not likely. I've been playing games since Ant Attack back on ZX Spectrum in the early 80's, and honestly, I'm getting sick of playing a guy all the time.

Second, I kinda enjoy a small, badass woman for some reason. A small, badass guy is too common, but women? There aren't that many interesting ones, imho. And she's gotta be small too, so I always play dwarves, gnomes, hobbits, halflings and so on when I can. She might be short and she might be a woman, but darn she's got an attitude. :D I don't identify with her, though. It's more that she can do and say everything I would have wanted to say in real life without being thrown in prison. :P

I once tried to create a female character with a different personality, though. Think it was in Neverwinter Nights. She was a classy sorceress, insisting she was better than everyone, refusing to pick up loot because it was 'below her dignity' and only fought when she had to. It was... interesting.

Another time, I created a lunatic. Seriously. She was a barbarian in Baldur's Gate, and I focused entirely only on her personality. That meant she multiclassed to wizard (of all things), carried two axes (never any other weapon, like swords and maces even if they were better) and didn't care about anything. And I mean anything. Some said she was nice because she didn't care about any rewards (killing stuff was reward enough), but Imoen left. She ended up my favorite character of all time. She would have been a nightmare in multiplayer, though. I bet she would be kicked out of the group 9 out of 10 times. Twice by AI characters.

I am a man, and I play mostly with male PC's.Afterwards, I play female characters, but only after I've completed a playthrough with one or two male characters. It's a bit more easy to relate to a man, especially with the love interests where you get to flirt.

However, there was something very weird that I noticed when I started with my second playthrough as an elf. I couldn't stop noticing how short and slim he was. In real life, I'm 6'4'' or 6'5'' and I'm pretty big, so it felt really unusual to play as a character that was so short. It was funny, I'd talk to Alistair in camp, and I found it odd that my PC would have to look up to talk to him, since it's something that I never have to do in real life.

I've tended to play female characters in Bioware games. Not sure if it's the sound sets or the available portraits/avatars, but it's hard for me to create a male character I actually like or sympathize with, much less identify with. When I play a male character, I try to create the one closest to myself, so it's always the same basic character, but when I play a female, I'm freer to experiment with different types and personalities.

I'm male but when I have a choice I go with creating a female almost every time. My DA character is female though I've barely played the game.

As someone else said there's not many times where you're not forced into your character and most of the time it's a male. I just like having balance. Though for what's probably the first time ever there's 2 games in a row with a female. Bayonetta was the last game I got and Mass Effect 2 will be next. I'm transfering my ME 1 characters to ME 2 and they were female. Generic space marine/tough guy #14929453950 just isn't intresting to have in every single game.

Usually my first character is male but I make female characters as well.

The problem most people seem to be having is that they see themselves as the character, which is kind of the worst thing you could do when playing a game.

I personly see myself more as a director, a puppeteer, a storyteller. Bioware makes the story and world of course, and when I play the game I provide a missing piece of the puzzle to make the story complete.

There is also a story I am planning to write down involving several female characters in prominent roles, doesnt hurt to get to know a bit more about women by following one during her adventures.

In Saint's Row 2 I was very happy with the option to make a female character since this was never done for any similar game such as the GTA series.

It also might help some men grow more understanding of women by sometimes using a female character in a story driven game, to see things from a female perspective.

And if not they can at least be happy with seeing a female bottom shaking a bit as she walks instead of watching at a man's backside through the entire game.

Mostly female characters (I would have mine as my avatar but all my female characters aren't showing up :( ). Hell, my only male character that I've played is romantically involved with Zevran ... :)

I'm wierd like that. Mostly cause it's boring with the majority of video games, movies etc having male leading roles so I like playing as women in games whenever I can.
