Is it me or Alistair is the most overrated guy?

I adore Alistair, but I have to disagree about him being weak of character. I think it's just how he became because of his life (ie, the life that was written for him). It all fits. It makes sense that he is the way he is. And he is a lot stronger and more confident by the end of the game.
I also tend to think that he was harder to romance in my first playthroughs. Leliana... now I wish that girl wasn't so damn easy. Without intending to, without any encouragement on my part, somehow she's ****ing at me telling me how I have to choose. I wish there was a '****slap via Morrigan' option cause that girl can sorely need it.

The flip side to this is he is human and we all subject to our emotions and wants.

But I have to ask, what the hell is a mans man? Just cos he not some boozy tight t-shirted pillock who goes out on a firday night and starts a few fights makes him a wuss in your opinion?
jeesh....
personally I dont like him (but I'm a guy...not a mans man btw)...but I can deffinatly see the attraction that women have with him.
He is not of strong character. It's not about the kinds of activities he likes to do. It's about the way he responds to situations. He's a whiner and he is weak (of character).
Noun
Singular
man's man
Plural
men's men
man's man (plural men's men)
- A man who is popular among men.
There are men out there that find him popular, hence, by the definition of that word, yes; he is a "Man's Man."
Me? I find him funny. He's comic relief for me and that's essential to me. I'd rather have diversity in my group than a bunch of guys who are emotionally closed off to show how "tough" they are. Hey, if that's you thing, good on you! But like I said, I like having diversity.

I wish there was more Shale love, personally. Shale is freaking hilarious.
Go to Orz with Leliana and Shale and walk around outside the Provings... Hilarious dialogue there. xD

There is a difference between sensitive and whiny. To me, Alistair's biggest fault is how he interacts with other men. He's just not a man's man. He's kind of like the gay BFF that women like to keep around sometimes.
By the end of the game, though, he's less of a failure.
This may be one of the reasons women are so fond of him and men are not.
Plus he's royalty so even if he were a royal failure, he would still provide beyond measure for their children. A royal weakling who they could push around, change the character of, and dress up however they like? I don't see how you could possibly be surprised how they swoon.
My girlfriend has never played this game. Just from watching over my shoulder (half the time my speakers aren't even on and I'm using headphones), she managed to become attracted to the guy and told me to make a female character to romance him. His maneurisms and facial expressions are just well coded to infiltrate and press all their little buttons. It's actually quite impressive from a psych perspective.

A man's man is a guy who is respected by other men for how he carries himself and how he interacts with them and other people.
EJ, how did I know you would crop up here? So, we both know we have little time for each other, but in being civil, by definition, any man that who does not command respect from other men is not a 'mans man'?
You really need to evaluate your life. Maybe some of us men do not care about being respected or even liked by other men, Most men are morons in fact, and to be honest, I am now after reading this thread quite happy to NOT be a 'mans man'...
Maybe those idiot men who blindly follow 'mens men' around becaue of the way they carry themselves and have huge respect for said 'mans men' need to grow some balls and 'man up' themselves as it were?

Yes ... the only reason women like men is so they can dress them up and make them hold their purses and buy their sanitary napkins, too....
Actually my girlfriend loves choosing what I should wear both to big family events and to more important meetings where I need to look right. I'm not afraid to admit she can have me looking significantly better than I can even though its from my own wardrobe.
And she got me to change Alistair out of Blood Dragon armor recetnly when looking over my shoulder because it apparently looked too fat and clunky for him (I just liked the stats
I really do think he was coded exceedingly well to get along with ladies and not with men (I admit in my first playthrough, much like Oghren I found myself wondering "Him? Does he even like girls?")

I think a large part of it is that the character is very well fleshed out, you get a LOT of his back story, and his character is very innocent. He's a person who's been raised very sheltered and with high moral values. Compare him to the others, he's the typical "sweep her off her feet, virtuous prince charming". The extremely well done voice acting just adds the icing to the cake for it.
Now, myself, I love romancing Alistair occasionally, it's a sweet side story that makes you feel good. However, I also really enjoy Zevran's romance story quite a bit, there's something about that one that draws me to it just as much as the PC/Alistair one.
Why is Alistair so popular? Because once you're into the "romance" portion, the Duncan dialogue has pretty much been exhausted, barring a few instances. He's got the "boy next door" background, the classic good looks, very expressive (and I admit, sexy) voice acting, and all of that gets tied up into a nice little package that says "pick me!" with puppy dog eyes.

If you can perform basic maintenance on my car, let me watch sports with you while I feed you on Sundays, and also give good lovin', then, as a woman, I consider that to be a man's man.

Technically - wouldn't a gay man be the real man's man - a man whom other men love?
Gay men are not the only men who are loved by gay men - gay men are attracted to straight men too
