As an aid to illustrate my opinion of what makes a man worthwhile, I have made a short list of characters from movies below. Again, this is only my opinion, but I hope it helps you to understand why I dislike Alistair.
Examples of the Human Male Phenotype:
Acceptable:
Hugh Grant's character from Notting Hill
Colin Firth's character from Love Actually
Liam Neeson's character from Love Actually
Hugh Grant's character from Love Actually
Seth Rogen's character from Funny People (borderline, but ok)
Ewan McGregor's character from Moulin Rouge (a little brooding, but acceptable)
Tom Hanks' character from Sleepless in Seattle (not a whiner)
Will Smith's character from Bad Boys (a little too much of a womanizer, but...not married)
Brendan Fraser's character from Blast from the Past
Daniel Jackson from Stargate:SG1
Unacceptable:
Alistair from Dragon Age:Origins
Billy Bob Thornton's character from Love Actually (example of the other end of the failure spectrum)
Peter from Heroes
Ron Weasley from Harry Potter
Edmund Pevensie from TCoN:The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Dane Cook's character from Good Luck Chuck
Adam Sandler's character from Funny People
Jason Schwartzman's character from Funny People
Screech from Saved By the Bell
Anakin Skywalker from any of the prequels
Cousin Eddie from Nat. Lampoon
Martin Lawrence's character from Bad Boys II (less annoying in BBI)

Idk about the women who play the game, but for me I couldn't care less if Alistair whines, he's hillarious when he does it. He's my comic relief, I don't really think he was meant to be all stoic and brave and all that crap. I have Sten for that.

You're entitled to your opinion, I mean who isn't? You shared it on the forums, people disagreed or agreed with you; there's really no need to try to force your opinion on others. I mean, really? xD

Maybe so, but IRL he would be your goofy friend you like to poke fun at. You'd never look up to him, though. I really tend to dislike Sten too, though. Zevran won't stop hitting on me, and that's annoying.Iris562 wrote...

Come to think of it, about the only male in all of Ferelden that I don't dislike is my own character.
I'm not asking you to agree with it. I just don't feel that I got my point across effectively. Whether or not anyone agrees isn't relevant to the fact that I'd like them to have an accurate impression of my opinion.Iris562 wrote...

Much as I disagree (as usual), that made me titter
And agreed, Anakin Skywalker is an example of an unacceptable male (except when he's a kid, then he's quite cute).
Well done, hilarious

Play a Final Fantasy game, then tell me Alistair is an annoying whiner. Alistair is just reasonably concerned about things.
+1
I only have one word to add to this: Squall.
Oh come on! He's not that bad! >_> At least he has an ass to make up for it. Besides he's pretty damn stoic for 90% of the game he can whine a bit :"(
Fayt from Star Ocean Til the End of Time on the other hand <_<

on the other hand, his only real issue is that he is a touch too whiny and generally lacks a spine (which is why i plan to harden him on this playthrough) and given his history and upbringing is entitled to his worldview (at least at the beginning... being an idealist/optimist/romantic is ok. shoving your head in the sand and saying "lalalala i can't hear you" is not) ...he is also comic relief and a (flawed) moral compass character ...that... and he fits the "knight-in-shinning-armour" stereotype (or is it prince charming?)
of course when my gf saw him during my first playthrough, her reaction was a bit like this:
"ooh... cute victim. i'm going to make a blood mage, harden him and rule ferelden behind the throne"

It's an epic tale of war, love, suffering, triumph, and glory. Alistair is not overrated at all and deserves all the praise he gets. He is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time.
A true triumph by Bioware.

I guess Bioware just likes to design whiny male characters. Now that I think about it, I did end up having to hit my own character over the head with a ladder to shut up HIS whining...Realmjumper wrote...
Think of it this way. Alistair is there from the start and is the friend of the player throughout the entire adventure. Everything you suffer he suffers. All the people that die or are saved. The tragedy, horrors, and more, except your origin story of course.

Hugh Grant and almost the entire male cast of Love Actually? You're definition of a "man's man" is getting more and more odd. What about the guy who stands outside Keira Knightley's house with the notecards?

I didn't harden his personality, some say that makes a difference. I didn't want to choose those dialog options. Not going to do it

That's more of a list of borderline-acceptable, while the second list is clearly over the top.
I can't even imagine Ron Weasley with hair on his chest.
Wait, why am I imagining Ron Weasley topless?
OH GOD! I CANNOT UNTHINK THIS!

Examples of the Human Male Phenotype:
Credibility bypass, reason: (mis)using phenotype to sound smarter.
On-topic, Alistair adds some witty banter (I can *feel* him channel Joss Whedon) but I wish I could could pull his tunic over his head and punch him blind in the face every time he starts to cry. An interesting creative decision to add a "sensitive" side, but it just seems incongruous with his Templar background.
