Yeah well....sometimes principles are more important than duty, a man without principles really is not a real OR a mans man :)

You know the name of people who also die fanatically, without hesitating, for their principles?

Terrorists.

Christians, Catholics...oh yeah I went there.

That is the game's fault and not Alistair's...They should of put that in...but they didn't, maybe it was cut.

It's because you do not know at that point. You are not told until later. And we should probably keep the spoilers to a minimum here...

You don't know about how to kill the Arch Demon until AFTER the Landsmeet, so that option obviously wouldn't be there.

The game didn't let me explain that I wanted Loghain to sacrifice himself to kill the Archdemon.

Plus, he was acting as if I was making Loghain a Grey warden as a reward, when I specifically said it was a punishment.

At the Landsmeet, the PC (along with Alistar) has no idea that a Grey Warden needs to be sacrificed to slay the Archdemon. ;)

How would you be able to explain it, then? Unless your PC is a fortune teller.

And they're doing it for the 72 virgins, too. How more manly can you get?

That, and regardless, my other point still stands. I wasn't rewarding Loghain, I was punishing him.

Alistair would not have approved of Loghain sacrificing himself either.

That is the place of the true hero, I see no reason for Alistair to give Loghain a hero's death when he could give him a criminal's death right there during the landsmeet. He would happily sacrifice himself or Riordan to kill the ArchDemon

More reason to hate the guy. That's just selfish. He would rather let Ferelden fall than give Loghain the opportunity redeem himself.

***Mildly spoilery - for characters, not story***

I think a large part of it is that the character is very well fleshed out, you get a LOT of his back story, and his character is very innocent. He's a person who's been raised very sheltered and with high moral values. Compare him to the others, he's the typical "sweep her off her feet, virtuous prince charming". The extremely well done voice acting just adds the icing to the cake for it.

Now, myself, I love romancing Alistair occasionally, it's a sweet side story that makes you feel good. However, I also really enjoy Zevran's romance story quite a bit, there's something about that one that draws me to it just as much as the PC/Alistair one.

Why is Alistair so popular? Because once you're into the "romance" portion, the Duncan dialogue has pretty much been exhausted, barring a few instances. He's got the "boy next door" background, the classic good looks, very expressive (and I admit, sexy) voice acting, and all of that gets tied up into a nice little package that says "pick me!" with puppy dog eyes.

Your impression of Alistair is very much tainted by the fact that you're playing a female character.

Characters in this game are completely different depending on your character's race, gender, and in-game choices.

Since a male character cannot romance Alistair, I'm never going to see that side of him.

All I see is a guy who is all "whoa is me" about the things life has thrown at him.  He was an unruly kid even before he was sent off to the chantry.  He's never accepted any responsibility for his own life situation, and he would rather whine and complain than actually try to take control of his life.

He has a responsbility both as a king and a Grey Warden, but he seems like he would prefer to just be a bum.

There isn't a single thing he does in the game that would make a man respect him, if you're not playing a female character.

Ever had large amounts of responsibility mate? It sucks big time.being a bum is sometimes a better life...

And wrong, I respect him (character) hugely, liking and respecting are two very different sides to the same sword.

I'd really like to see an honest discussion and critique on Alistair that isn't "Whiny crybaby boy wah wah wah" vs. "He's perfect, all haters be struck down by Andraste's sword". It's like whenever someone tries to critique his character, they get berated by his fangirls. I wonder if there's a happy balance. I like DA:O, I really do, but I think it's sad that some can't see it as more than a dating sim/eroge game (not accusing anyone here of that specifically).

Also, I happen to like CoD and Dragon Age :P CoD (there are 6 of them, not counting the handheld spin-offs) has a story, too, but that's another thread.

I don't understand what Alistair wants.

He doesn't want to be a templar, he doesn't want to be a king, he doesn't want to lead and take responsability. WTF do you want then?
