And have you never met anyone like that? Or even lets say, your saying your entire life you have always known what you wanted? I think we all know the answer to that, because were human.

Alistair wants to be loved for who he is, not what he is.

One thing is for sure.. Alistair is a strong character. Just the fact he causes so much discussion, proves that his is one of the most memorable characters bioware has come up with. Love him or hate him.

I don't understand what Alistair wants.

He doesn't want to be a templar, he doesn't want to be a king, he doesn't want to lead and take responsability. WTF do you want then?

I've been very good about not jumping into this thread, but I will respond to this since I had the same question (OK, what the hell DO you want then, Alistair?) and after a few playthroughs and having characters have different level of friendship with him, it seems like he really just wants to be a Grey Warden. His "happiest" ending, to me, is when he goes off to do Warden stuff. Of course, he still apparently would rather be taking orders than making his own decisions but that's more or less just an inevitable conceit of his nature as a videogame companion.

I'm a woman and I hate Alistair.Always did, since the start.

And I love Loghain, same: always did, since the start.

.I guess I will never be attracted to a guy qualified by 'adorable'. A puppy yes, even a gremlin. But I hate 'adorable' men. Just two opposite concepts for me.

That's why I love Loghain: he's a man: he knows what he wants, taking command, right or wrong, not trying to hide or find excuses, not trying to be liked, doesn't care, go on .NOT an 'adorable' whinning thingie....

Exactly.  He just wants to whine.

It all started in Lothering...

At least Morrigan was willing to speak her mind.  Morrigan is more of a man than Alistair.

All I see is a guy who is all "whoa is me" about the things life has thrown at him.  He was an unruly kid even before he was sent off to the chantry.  He's never accepted any responsibility for his own life situation, and he would rather whine and complain than actually try to take control of his life.

He has a responsbility both as a king and a Grey Warden, but he seems like he would prefer to just be a bum.

There isn't a single thing he does in the game that would make a man respect him, if you're not playing a female character.

Actually, about his background, I was actually rather impressed with Alistair's responses about his childhood, that he'd accepted his situation, didn't begrudge his family, Isolde or Eamon about it, because it was the only thing they could do. I dare say I almost shed a tear of pride for the boy.

If only that translated into the rest of his demeanor. He's a little schizo, now that I think about it. He got through his childhood very well adjusted, able to think for himself, but in almost all his interactions during the story, he's just a royal pain in the ass to drag around, with his complaints about my decisions.

So leana....would Loghain be considered a 'mans man' in your feminine opinion? Or in your opinion, what is a mans man?

(vurious as pretty much all we had is a biased, one sided, insecure pov from mostly men).

I agree. He tells you that his happiest time was with the rest of the Gray Wardens (previous to meeting the PC, of course) and that's the only time he's truly felt like he belonged somewhere. (And in battle he often screams "For the Gray Wardens" and never "For the Chantry!" lol)

Though, you can really "shape" him to be whether you want, there's no doubt he loved the Wardens. Yet, he is prepared to do what he has to for Ferelden. *Trying really hard not to say too much since this is supposed to be the spoiler-free forum*

***Mildly spoilery - for characters, not story***

I think a large part of it is that the character is very well fleshed out, you get a LOT of his back story, and his character is very innocent. He's a person who's been raised very sheltered and with high moral values. Compare him to the others, he's the typical "sweep her off her feet, virtuous prince charming". The extremely well done voice acting just adds the icing to the cake for it.

Now, myself, I love romancing Alistair occasionally, it's a sweet side story that makes you feel good. However, I also really enjoy Zevran's romance story quite a bit, there's something about that one that draws me to it just as much as the PC/Alistair one.

Why is Alistair so popular? Because once you're into the "romance" portion, the Duncan dialogue has pretty much been exhausted, barring a few instances. He's got the "boy next door" background, the classic good looks, very expressive (and I admit, sexy) voice acting, and all of that gets tied up into a nice little package that says "pick me!" with puppy dog eyes.

Your impression of Alistair is very much tainted by the fact that you're playing a female character.

Characters in this game are completely different depending on your character's race, gender, and in-game choices.

Since a male character cannot romance Alistair, I'm never going to see that side of him.

All I see is a guy who is all "whoa is me" about the things life has thrown at him.  He was an unruly kid even before he was sent off to the chantry.  He's never accepted any responsibility for his own life situation, and he would rather whine and complain than actually try to take control of his life.

I have played male characters, however the initial question seemed to indicate you were asking for the romance reasoning, if I misunderstood, I apologize.

I will still say that the fleshed out background and voice acting continues to be a valid reason that so many people are taken with Alistair, both male and female characters.

Morrigan and Alistair are opposite sides of the exact same coin. It's why they hate each other. Look at their stories and break them down to bare bones. Both sheltered, both growing up indoctrinated by those raising them. Morrigan was raised to put survival first, and she sees that as the most important, no matter the cost. Alistair was raised to be good and at times seriously holier than thou (he is a templar after all).

But all in all, those two have more in common than they realize.

I don't find him whiny at all - as he tells you, his situation has shaped his whole life. It's what got him sent to the templars; it's why many were so hostile with him while he was there; it's why he doesn't know his family. Just when he finds something that feels right to him (i.e. the grey wardens) along comes his past again to mess it all up for him. I'd be whining far more if it were me.

As to what he wants, i think he just wants to be normal and have the ability to make his own decisions without someone making them for him based on a detail that he (again) had no control of. Like Alistair himself says, Duncan was the first person who actually asked him what HE wanted. We're talking about a character that's never been allowed to put himself first, ever.

When you're "in love" with someone, it's easy to overlook their flaws.

I'm not, so I see him for what he is.  I've dealt with enough pain and loss in my life that it has probably made me a little cynical, but Alistair is just a general basketcase.  He made a bad first impression, and it just went downhill from there.  Perhaps it's because I played a mage that he was even more excessively whiny.

Even at the very end, he whines about me forcing him into his situation.  Like everything bad in his life is somehow someone else's fault...

I played a mage...and he wasn't whiny, he actually has a thing for magic...and likes it..it interest him. I was a mage with the same sarcastic attitude as him and Morrigan when they bicker with each other.

*SPOILER*

He starts of as a whiny guy, but when he takes the speech in front of the crowd just before the final battle you can't help but feel proud of him.

Don't remember a character in a video game accomplishing that for quite a while. Thumbs up to Bioware.

That's not a man's man.  Being a woman, you just can't understand.

It's about how you carry yourself.  Alistair wants to be carried.

The "damsel in distress" is often an appealing role (to men) for a woman to play.  It's never an appealing role (to men) for a man to play.  I'm not saying that's the situation in the game, but it's just a fact of the way we're designed.

Men are supposed to be able to take care of themselves.  Women are supposed to deserve the right to be taken care of, but women who can also take care of themselves have an added bonus to their appeal.  Mr. Mom types are not respected.  It's just something we are biologically wired to disapprove of.

Men are supposed to be perceived as someone who is capable of protecting the family while his wife is safe at home, about ready to give birth.  (Not that the woman should always be pregnant, but it is expected that the situation will eventually occur.  A man who cannot take care of his pregnant wife is no man at all.)

Alistair just seems more like the type who would beg his woman to have an abortion if he found out she got pregnant.

something like that 8D
