Started this couple of days ago and of course Im completely new to the complex tactics and stuff. Im on PC playing from Steam. Couldnt find a search function here so this is why Im posting a probably old issue.
What baffles me - not to say irritate - is this stupid companions AI. Whether I put each of them as Default or Aggressive, etc... much too often they just stand there and watch. Im playing a human magi and cannot tank these foes on my own (entrance to Ishai Tower).
Even if I indivudally click on each of those chutiyas, they just stand there, or only one of them attacks.... How come this is "standard" behaviour? even in a game so basic as NWN 1 (which is why I decided to try DAO, given Bioware became one of my favourite companies), the companions well... attacked.
Many thanks,
pd

I'm not sure. Maybe it has something to do with Steam? Maybe your system isn't that great and it lags? I have no idea.
For me...they attack just fine.
I have Alistair on Aggressive...with Leliana and Morrigan set to attack Alistair's target at range.
They are always quick into the fighting...sometimes even faster than myself.
Not sure why it's different for you...but it's definitely not "standard".

Thx for the feedback - fact is, companions *were* doing ok, until on the last fight in the Korkari Marshes (early in beginning), when I noticed this happenning.
Then I noticed that right clicking on a spot so my Mage left the melee area meant ALL moved away from battle to that spot. So, now I left click on my Mage and then choose a safer spot. BUT the odd (upsetting ) behaviour above still happens all the time. Now I am at the Ishai Tower, where I am using Earhtqauke to detonate foes and these morons just pose for pictures. On Standard / Aggressive behaviour... Makes me wanna solo, if possible!

The thing to keep in mind is that whenever a character is selected, his/her tactics get suspended, thereby giving the player full control over that character's actions. This also applies to the whole team, so after selecting multiple characters for any reason, remember to deselect the ones that you won't be micromanaging, otherwise they'll just stand around neglecting their tactics and behaviour setup, even though they'll retaliate if hit by melee attacks.

Just select one character. You should only see a shiny border around one portrait, rather than all 4.

Not sure how this will help other initiates... but part of the core of the difficulty is t hat when playing a mage (at least) u hv to be very careful with the left and right buttons. I now know that the right is only for setting specific target - for which or for how many characters, depends on which or how many party members are "highlighted" - while the left button performs the action / spell / whatever...
In other words, my mistake was :
1) I was right-clicking on a target (with all party members highlighted);
2) then right-clicking on a spot so my weak mage ran away from battle;
3) watching everybody run back and forth aimlessly, because they all understood to run to that spot.
Thanks all for the patience in clarifying stuff.
