I don't just mean nostalgia, but gods, I got a ton of that too (edit: M-7 FTW!!!). No, I mean that the ending broke the series for me (and I still hate it, though only with the fury of a dozen suns instead of a thousand), and Citadel brought me back to Mass Effect.
I'm going to write a whole thread-starting post about why Citadel is good enough to heal that wound, but here's the short, short version:
1) It's functionally post-game content. Yes yes, canonically it's between the Citadel attack and the assault on Cronos Station. But it's best played when you have the maximum number of people you've reunited with, and the end drops you back...to just before Cronos. It's so insanely easy to headcanon as post-game, that can't be an accident. Plus, what could possibly challenge Shepard after he defeated a race of machine-gods that's ruled for a billion years? Yeah, that final boss.
2) It remembered that Mass Effect is a video game. Proper final boss. Great action. Mini-games. Armax Arsenal Arena with almost all your old friends. That last one alone extends play value almost indefinitely, and makes up for all the development time lost to multiplayer. "AAA experience" indeed.
3) It remembers the ultimate draws of the ME universe - the world and the characters. The return of Wrex, the Citadel Archives, the party, remembrances for the lost (okay, except Legion...you did drop that one, guys), finally getting back together with ME2 friends and LIs...this may not fix the ending, but it does fix pretty much every other issue I had with ME3. Plus, Mordin sings Amazing Grace.
In short, kudos, Bioware. You've restored my faith in you, and in the Mass Effect universe. Bring on ME4. I may not pre-order it, but there's an excellent chance I'll buy it, which is way up from the 0% chance that existed on March 4th. Thank you for a great series and a proper goodbye.
