Hello Bioware and BSN,
Back in January I took an extended leave from the Mass Effect series and from BSN itself to focus on my Clinical rotations. I had exhausted the Mass Effect universe with countless replays, became Best of the Best on multiplayer, and met quite a few great individuals courtesy of Mass Effect 3. Unfortunately, an additional reason as to why I left my ME trilogy behind when I moved across the country was because it had lost it's replayability. I had completed at least 15 playthroughs on each game, tried both genders, had different LI's, changed major choices, and experimented with different classes; I had just exhausted the trilogy completely of all it had. This is where Citadel DLC comes into play.
My console and trilogy are still on the other end of the nation from me, but it did not stop me from Youtubing as much of the Citadel DLC as I possibly could upon it's release. And Bioware, you delivered in providing new life and new incentive to come back. When I saw the Reckoning DLC drop (please give the MP Devs a pat on the back as those guys have been amazing to us fans) and then the Citadel DLC with Wrex, my heart fluttered a little bit. You hit the right cords and right then and there I made a phone call and requested my console be shipped to me. With some thorough watching and time to reflect on what was good and bad, I thought I'd post this in light of your PAX retrospective speech.
The good: you plucked all the right cords with the fans who have been with the series since the beginning, and boy, did you do it marvelously. The addition of Wrex as a temp squadmate was executed perfectly. His introduction to the DLC was done great justice and brought back fond memories. The way you handled him within this DLC is what I expected to have been done in ME3 to begin with. You rectified the wrongs with ME2 paramours. Thane's funeral, Samara being romanced, and Jack using a shout-out reference to the High-EMS destroy ending and opening up the way she did were all excellently done. You did good on those, Bioware, you really did. The Armax combat arena was a good idea executed even better. It challenged many and it paved the way to play with former squadmembers; smart move, Bioware. The jokes were funny and well-time, the VA's performed at their best, and you gave us a lasting goodbye. It's hard to understand how these digital characters transcended just being a plethora of polygons and animations to become "friends" who we just don't want to say goodbye to. Citadel executed a proper sendoff to these characters, and the scene where Shep is consoled by his/her LI before entering the Normandy echoed my feelings on the trilogy: simply, the best.
Here's what went wrong: it feels all out of place. The narrative took the back seat in favor of a light hearted piece chock-full of BSN jokes and select fanservice which makes it stick out like a sore thumb in the grim ME3. While having Wrex as a temporary squad in this DLC was good, it did bring some ire when the thought dawned upon me, "This is what we were promised to begin with for vanilla ME3 with several characters, and instead all we received were cameos during select chapters." ME3 should have received the temporary squad treatment for others you gave Wrex. This is a big misstep you can learn for future trilogies when you discuss former squadmembers being temporary squadmembers. The Clone Shep feels like he/she missed their potential as they felt more like a D-rated villain in terms of the narrative. Clone Shep is nothing more than a Conrad Verner version of you who is bitter, there isn't as much depth to them as their could have been. The Tali LI scene where she sings, I just don't understand why you chose this route. The scene was awkward to watch and her revealing her full-face would have been so much more appreciated; it would have actually eclipsed a lot of other praises I have for this DLC, but you chose not to in favor of karaoke night. And lastly, you didn't give the fans the major piece they have clamored for months: new ending possibilities aside from additional war assets. While I respect sticking to your guns on your choice about upholding preexisting endings, I think this was your worst misstep. Additional endings would have sated several of the critics and added so much more replayability to this game, but you chose not to; when it was the major fan desire, I am simply stumped why you didn't add any other options. It's not so much I desire a happy ending, it's because we are forced to have our hero submit to the rules of the epitome of our trilogy antagonist: the Catalyst. Don't like it? Well, there's refuse and everyone dies, so try again. This DLC could have added the war assets in action on Priority Earth to show your choices in action, but didn't. And it could have given you the best proper send off to your friends and acknowledgement of what your choices did in the end via epilogue slides... it didn't.
Bioware, you did great with the fanservice in the Citadel. You hit several notes well and I am so thankful for the product you have given us as fans and how receptive you are to us. You are my favorite developer, ME is my favorite series, and Shepard is my favorite series. However, I do not know if I can play Citadel DLC just yet. I'm not ready to say goodbye to my Shepard, Ash, or my crew. It sucked me into it's orbit and never really let go. As much as this piece feels out of place and it stokes the fire of what could have and should have been, thank you for listening. So in light of your PAX retrospective video, please, and I'll urge this once more, please give us some outlet for us fans to know what happened post-ME3 choices. Headcanons can only take us so far and the ending of ME3 left more questions than answers for me. Once again, thank you: it's been the greatest.
