Blecch, hoping that will have a toggle.

The character model was made by the same artist who did Altair for AC.  Maybe he confused Garrett for an assassin.  How do you blend into a crowd when you're obviously trying to conceal your face?  Of course Garrett's main MO is never to be seen at all, but still.

It's not that easy.  The problem is that these games now are designed and built around the quest compass and 'helpers' like that.

Look at Skyrim, if you remove the quest compass, npcs don't even give you enough info on where to go, ect..

No, the devs just have to not be lazy slobs. It's not hard to add one or two lines of text or even a little of voice over giving general directions. New Vegas for example didn't make the compass a requirement for many of the quests. "the legion hung the prisoners in their big ass war camp south west of the dam within vie of the riverthe river", "a drunken hobo I want you to send here for rehab is two blocks to the east of here (the children of the apocolypse fort"

That's all it takes to narrow things down to a 2-3 minute search to find what you're lookinf for.

Nothing hard about, it's just that Betheshda are lazy.

Looks like it'll have its own version of The Heart as well.

Of course it will. The Heart is an important artifact in the Thief universe and was first seen in Thief 3, which was released 8 years before Dishonored.

Glad they're no longer calling the game Thi4f. Though some seem to think the lack of any numeral in the name means it's gonna be a reboot.

I agree.   I meant it's not that easy for the player to just shut off the helpers, because of the lack of info given.

Obsidian are more akin to the devs of old.  In that they make (for the most part) the types of rpgs they would actually want to play, while Bethesda just care about the millions and millions of sales to casuals, like Bioware.

Dark Souls is an example of a great game that had zero handholding at all. They had zero objective markers and you had to pay attention to npcs giving hints. Then it was up to you to explore and figure it out. It wasn't too hard to do that. It required exploration. Even the most basic of game features required you to figure it out. They didn't say "Humanity is obtained in items and drops and some merchants, and using it makes you unhallow, allows you to kindle fires and such". Item descriptions gave hints. Kindling is another thing, too. A lot of it required you to figure it out. Alas, people complained about that, even in Dark Souls. Why? I don't know. They want a cozy, simple experience. Complaints in "difficulty" from pc players is also why The Witcher 2 got made easier via patch.

It's a shame, really. Dishonored isn't some Thief copycat. They took elements from it, just like Deus Ex and Bioshock, and some of their own breath. Some devs that made those games also made Dishonored, so there is almost an expectation they would do so.

Let's hope there is an abundance of options to turn off, like objective markers, hints and the like. And passive capability. Shadow runs should be a given expectation.

It just feels like I played in this senario recently, because I have. A Lord oppressor during a plague.

That's why the Souls games are good (aside from the good action combat)

It's a breath of fresh air to get a mainstream rpg that you actually have to figure out somewhat and doesn't hold your hand/treat you like you never played a video game before.

So if Eidos Montreal are still the developers, I hope they've learnt their lesson w/ Human Revolution's boss fights, i.e give me the option to talk my way out of it.

Well in Thief's case just let Garrett sneak past them or run past them.

(That's if bosses will even exist in this game which I doubt)

Heh, I dislike the "Focus" thing, though. It seems as if it has become very popular to copy the Detective Mode from Batman games. Hitman Absoliution has one (Instinct), so does the new Tomb Raider (Survival Instinct). I suppose the common reply to that is "don't like it - don't use it", but you end up using it anyway like the special vision from Dishonored. Not neccesarily a bad thing since it offers help for impatient people or just folks who tend to suck at stealth.Still, hopefully it's just an optional thing you can use whenever you feel like it and not something you'll have to use to bypass certain parts.

I think all the new features are good, the focus thing sounds like it'll make the game "easier" but I never found any Thief to be challenging games in the first. My fear is there will be pointers guiding you throughout a mission just like in Deus Ex: HR but since I enjoyed DE:HR despite the flaws I'm sure Edios Montreal can produce yet another great game with Thief even if some of the features do tick off some fans (the same happened with Human Revolution).

Most of the elements seem to be true to Thief:

+The artificial intelligence makes it clear that Garrett is not a fighter and that the game is not an action genre. Combating four or more guards is equivalent to suicide. The guards are aware of where they are and the places where thieves can hide. They look in many and varied ways.

+There will be a compass that tells you where to go. (Perhaps this means we won't see the pointers after all and will just have the compass which is a lesser version of the pointer but used to an extent where you're not exactly guided directly by the hand. The compass has always been in Thief.)

+You will be able to explore the city at your leisure.

+There will always be multiple entrances to all rooms and locations.

+You can turn off the lights and candles to darken the rooms

+You can improve your skills. At the end of the levels you are allowed to spend money on improving your skills and get supplies. (New element but I always thought Thief could have done with some RPG elements like the ones introduced in Deadly Shadows)

+You can knock out the guards with a blow if you catch them from behind.

+You may use tools in the room to defend yourself (bottles, switches ...).

+You will have a bow with all kinds of arrows, arrows to put out candles and candlesticks, smoke arrows to distract leaving a trail behind.

So numerous elements from all the previous Thief series are there to ensure this is still Thief. Like Deus Ex: HR I'm sure we can expect all the multiple paths, routes and ways to complete objectives and at the end of the day I'll take that (even if it does come with a new slow-mo focus system which might not be all that bad) over all these other generic 5-hour games coming out.

Perhaps the title for this thread should be changed because the title is simply "Thief" and it is a reboot of the series.

The worst blasphemy would be if Stephen Russell isn't voicing Garrett. That'll be unforgivable.

Obviously some people are going to be upset that they're "modernizing" certain aspects of the game so that you no longer have to control the character with an abacus via an intricate pulley system, find game clues by using a substitution cipher on the entirety of Ulysses by hand, or partake in whatever other archaic, masochistic, "classic" "gameplay" elements that the Master Race are for whatever reason in love with.

hahaha I just read this post properly and it's obvious you've never played theif. There is nothing about thiefs controls that wouldn't translate well to gamepad, and it's not even a puzzle game. It's a sneak around in dark shadows and find hidden stuff. It's about as simple as assassin creed would be if it were dark and had none of the hand holding aids for the deaf, dumb and blind audience.

Whenever I'm about to do something, I ask myself "would an idiot do that?" If the answer is yes, I do not do that thing. Next time you're thinking of going on a rant about a particular game, acutally play the stupid thing first, or at least watch a youtube video.

I'm excited for this one. I really enjoyed the previous Thief games.

It's too bad many neophytes will likely view this game as being influenced by Dishonored... when in reality the reverse is true.

In reality it will be thief in name only. It has been proven beyond a doubt that horror, pure stealth and darkness do not earn enough to support a AAA last gen game, and the devs are all ****ing that PS4 is going to be more exclusive than ever.

And if dishonored was influenced by any one thing it's probably the Batman games. Was a better super hero first person game than a stealth one.

It's fairly obvious that I wasn't ranting about Thief but instead was ranting about other people ranting about Thief.

Your idiocy self-filter is obviously not capable of handing the magnitudes of idiocy that you're capable of producing.  I would recommend upgrading to a model that's rated for at least 90 MegaKardashians.

So what do you expect mickey? For this new Thief to feature the exact same game-play of Thief 1 and 2? They're introducing new fast-paced features into the game probably to appeal to the mainstream audiences that much is true but there's still a great deal of original Thief elements that remain.

You can't go on a action killing rampage (and from what we know the dagger is not even in the game this time we only have the bow and club) and two or more guards will kill you easily. There's multiple ways to complete your objectives and it's still a stealth game at heart with the darkness playing a role.

So it's not the original Thief but that's not to say it won't be a great game. My only concerns are that it'll be too easy and could hold your hand but Deus Ex: Human Revolution wasn't like that (well it featured it to an extent but it wasn't over-done).

"It has been proven beyond a doubt that horror, pure stealth and darkness do not earn enough to support a AAA last gen game."

Then surely you understand it would be financial suicide for them to make another Thief game in the vein of the old ones which most gamers today would get bored off and go back to CoD?

I love the Thief series but this is a reboot so it's expected that it would be different. We will see elements from the original series but we'll see new features too.
