Thief 4 announced

People in the gaming community who have either long-lasting or dead favorite franchises often worry about the next game being changed to appeal a "mainstream audience". Very rarely do you see developers say that as their intention explicitly, often it is just implied when it is the case.
Thief 4? ****, they just said it straight, multiple times in a video

Next thing they'll be announcing there'll be no Benny (the silly drunk guard you can hear many times in the previous games) I bet. IN WHICH CASE DEFINITELY NO BUY!

I kind of hoped that he would return, but it seems he won't (though who knows... this "new guy" could be only hired for the trailer, since the voiceover sessions hasn't begun yet. We'll see soon enough.
Even if I love the good old and familiar, cynical voice of Garrett, this voice doesn't sound bad either and it's somewhat similar to the old one. So if this is the voice indeed, it won't be a deal breaker for me.
Otherwise I dig where they take the artistic style and the desing of the City and the world of Thief. It is more in line with the one we could see in Thief DS, even if the City of Thief The Metal Age will alway be my favorite.

Yeah, that sure isn't Stephen Russel you hear in that trailer.

Don't be so negative. This is a relaunch. It would be unjust to expect it to be the same as the originals were. They will always hold a special place in my "heart", but I think we should give it a chance...
Anyway 2014 will be a good year in my gaming life: The Witcher - Wild Hunt, Thief, the new ME title, AC - Black Flag, Metro Last Light, Watchdogs... my gf. will kill me.

Oh, why?GimmeDaGun wrote...
Stephen Russel didn't even want to take part in Thief Deadly Shadows. After the release of that game, he outright stated that he's done with our good old Garrett.
I want to be excited for this game, but nothing is drawing me in and several things bother me, mostly changes to Garrett, and because I found DXHR so bland and am afraid it's going to be like that.
So, confirmation- not Stephen Russell. Lame. No longer interested.

Next we'll be hearing that Kain won't be voiced by Simon Templeman in a LoK reboot since this seems to be the trend in which case I'm pretty sure the offices of Crystal Dynamics will be stormed but we're going off-topic Morroian and you'll get the thread locked if you keep talking about Legacy of Kain. I love it too but still, this is the Thief thread.

The new VA voiced Altair's father in Assassin's Creed. The concept artist for the new Garrett worked on AC. A lot of the designers are from AC. The game is an AC knockoff. Which is fine if you like that sort of thing, but it's not Thief.

The ironic thing here is that if you turned Altair's original costume dark blue, it'd look more like Garrett's Thief 1&2 costume than the gimp-ninja gear they came up withAddai67 wrote...

As per a message above what if he didn't want to do the game?Elton John is dead wrote...
No Stephen Russell? Why would they blaspheme so? They made some excuse about motion capture and voice acting but come on this is Stephen Russell we're talking about. Garrett's iconic voice...
From the RPS preview this is not the case.Addai67 wrote...

It's not just the voice, they are botching Garrett's character design completely. It's not the same character or the same game. Very disappointing.
edit- I read the RPS preview. It does not reassure me, at all. Missing on the atmosphere and unique flavor of the City, missing on Garrett, and as someone pointed out in the comments, putting so much emphasis on third persion switches as part of "immersion" which betrays complete misunderstanding of how first person immersion is supposed to work. Dishonored wasn't perfect, but they got it much better than these devs do.

I'd be incredibly heartbroke if the game does not feature those iconic religious nutjobs, its just sacrilegious to even dare think of a Thief game without the order of the Hammer.

They may make an entirely new one like the Machinists from Thief II. I'd expect a reference or two at least. I'm lukewarm about the game thus far. The trailer depicts the thief as more of a Dishonored style than the original sly/sarcastic/defiant Garrett. No mention of the Hammerites yet?

I hope thats not going to be the case, the order of the Hammer was so well-thought-out that it would very hard to replace it; it would be easier and more wise to simply use the existing faction and make it fit the new story / lore / game play.
About the screenshots, I don't really like the new look of the world, everything looks so square edged and colorless, almost sepia. And the clothing style looks very late 18th century to me, thats quite a leap from the late middle age slightly Victorian style from T1-3.

I wouldn't expect them to be the hammerites as we know them. For starters, religious fanatics are often portraed to not have a clue contrary to Thief 1 and 2 where they were actually correct and aware of many of the story lines happenings. Fanatics are usually just amusing nutjobs for the players to make fun of and smack around.

Then drag him from his rich luxurious mansion and MAKE him do it.
@AC Developers
Oh no. Don't tell me that this game will be preaching atheism to me now...
"SCREW the Hammerites! Everything is a lie!"
Well hopefully these AC developers have nothing to do with the story otherwise we can expect that and a incoherent story too.
Yeah and if the AC developers have anything to do with the story you can expect the The Hammerites to be babbling nutjobs rather than the articulate craftsmen and builders that they were who spoke in old fashion English. This is probably something they will probably remove (if there are Hammerites in the game) because the mainstream audience "won't like it and can't become immersed in a world with languages that they can't understand" despite all evidence to the contrary...
Of course despite Garrett no longer being voiced by Stephen and being a ninja goth (Seriously Edios?) I'm certain the developers at Montreal will produce a good game even if it does feel like a massive departure from the previous Thief games now....
It's no wonder they removed 4 from the title...
