I found Dagon and helped the two fighters reenter the Proving already.

I think there's a bug if you try to help both at the same time. It just halts any story progress and you'll most likely have to revert to an earlier save.

Nope. When you help one, the other just accuses you of being a traitor. (This, oddly, will get you the Achievements of having sided with _both_ Harrowmont and Bhelen.) What you can NOT do is actually perform all of the tasks for both factions.Lekwid wrote...

A) enter the Proving as Harrowmont's champion.

You can fight on Harrowmont's side and still be in Bhelen's good books if you tell Vartag that you only did it to gain Harrowmont's trust and will backstab him later…which you never actually have to do if you don't want to. Both quest lines are still open, in the same way as certain Mage Collective quests have multiple options. I assume that the same trick can be done on the other side if you have enough persuasion.

I already went back to an earlier save, still confused here.

Dumb question, did you just enter the proving, or did you actually fight all the way through it?

I played through the Proving, but I have since gone back to an earlier save where the Proving has not begun.Veemel wrote...
It is easy to get into a deadlock if you play both sides, so better just pick a side and run with it if you want to play safe. Not sure on all the exact conditions that will break the game.

I just didn't want to make a hasty decision on which of the two to pick.
Am I stuck?

Who do I even go to after the tournament? I have two journal entries open, one says goto Vartag, the other Harromont's person, but the other day it seemed like I could get nowhere with either person.
I wish I could kill them both, since I am a rogue character anyway.

hehe, that is understandable. I had to do it several times as i found the last fight rather challengingspectral8 wrote...

talked to both groups), i thought about it for a bit, then declared for
Harrowmont in the fights. If i recall correctly, after the fight Vareg
came up to me and accused me of being a traitor, but i persuaded him
into thinking that i'd done it to gain access to Harrowmont. After
that, i never talked to that faction again (never met Bhelen), and the only thing you have
to be careful of (that i came across) was to not plant any documents on
Jayna's body in the slums, as that is apparently where the Vartag
questchain is leading. Then after going into the deep, pay attention to
the few dialogue options you get (you'll mostly be fighting), and just
remain vague and noncommital. Then when i came back i put the crown on
Harrowmont's head

Really, I've done it plenty of times to gain more XP and hasn't happen to me. You can work for both till you put one on the crown with subtle variation to the quest. Afterall their only using you to get to the throne, so why not use them till the ultimate decision. Only bug I noticed is a bug in the quest journal that does not close even after you put the other on the throne.

spoilers:
it occurs when: you finish the proving and give the 2 docs to the two nobles
then when you go to bhelen's man, he won't talk to you unless you say you will be a spy, then when you go to harrowmount's man he says the same thing. essentially it locks you out of the remainder of the dwarf quests (deep roads, anvil)

What about the Carta? You can't just go to dust town & find out about Jarvia's hideout?jfrenchy wrote...

Having run into it, your best bet is to reload your earlier save, pick one side and stick to it.

If you give a document to a noble first and then talk to Harromont's guy and help his fighters it locks you out of anything else.
The backstab quests show up, but neither tell you what to do next.
I hate this game!
