Is there some way to make this guy suck less as a tank ? seems to get killed just about every fight and hes got all my best equipment on him .

gear he's using :

Starfang 1hander
Eamon's shield
Silverite warden commander armor set
helm of honnleath
spellward (? - the amulet thing you buy from the camp vendor)
lifegiver
harvest festival ring
andruil's blessing

his stats are setup with dex as his primary stat , every level i give him 2 dex, 1 str . every third level its 2 dex, 1 con.

anyone have any suggestions as to why he drops like a pair of panties on prom night ?

My Alistair tank has STR & CON until 40 STR with just enough DEX to activate his DEX based shield talents. He Tanked excellently for my mage through the entire game. <3

Edit: Screenshot of Alisters tanking.

I typically have him in defence stance with threaten & use shield wall incessantly;
•    For mages fights he just auto attacks with the odd shield bash and a glyph of nul magic.
•    For groups of peons my group concentrates fire on his target while my mage uses crowd control to spread the damage out.

hmm , i go with the higher dex from his level abilities and then just use the books for touch up stuff like con since he already gets lots of hp with the 10 bonus con from the ring. just seems to die really easy. im playing right now and just did the carta bit in orzammar and he died 4 times in that little place . good thing approval isnt based off how i treat him in combat because he'd slit my throat im my sleep next time im at camp lol.

Try the knight commander armor with diligence gloves and boots and the key to the city ring in place of harvest festival. Dweomer and Hale runes for your sword. Get just enough strength to equip your gear, then pump dex. Ignore con. See how that works out for you.

I've seen him tank pretty well, but can't really tell what items he used.

I think the key talents are these (not sure if you can put them in an order)

Shield Wall, Shield Mastery, no-flank talent, Threaten, Taunt.

Keeping Shield Wall and Threaten up is pretty awesome by itself.

As for stats, I believe he should just have enough str for the armor usage. Then some CON and alot of dex. He may not do the best damage, but he is meant to tank and he will tank well. His "aggro" will come from threaten, he will have good hp and a good amount of avoidance.

Same to me. He was my tank on my first playtrough. Died a lot in the begining but after lvl. 8 maybe 9 he was ok.

I have the same opinion about talents adding precise striking, rally and warcry (from the Champion Spc.). Maximized the shout has the same effect of 2H. Sweep and is great for the mobs.

ill try out the key to the city idea , but ive tried the diligence gear out on him and warden commander seems to work better . His talents are all towards shield and he has maxed out champion tree . Im playing on hard and my mage (sh/blood , not aw) is doing most of the tanking and not dying (mage is my created character not morrigan or wynne.) .Just cant figure out why he drops so easily , his defense and armor ratings are fairly high , and his hp is pretty good . Maybe i just need to tweak his tactics or something ? , thanks for the advice folks.

The reason I suggested the diligence gloves and boots is because they pair pretty well with the knight commander breastplate, giving you a good all-around boost to defense, armor and spell resistance. In fact, its pretty easy to become nearly spell immune this way, if that's what's doing him in. Another good combo is evon the great's mail with wade's superior heavy gloves and boots. However, you have to rock the armor that works best for your playstyle. Make sure he's got the Shield Tactics talent so that he isn't being critted to death from behind. Also, remove the tactic that causes him to use Shield Cover. Its really a situational talent, but he'll use it the first time someone shoots an arrow at him and then all your melee defenses go down the drain. Don't forget to set a tactic for him to use a health poultice when he's hurt. Hope some of this helps!

He only needs strength to 35 + 9, everything else goes into dexterity. Keep Shield Wall up at all times. What other sustainables you use depends on specialisations. Make sure he's chugging health pots when needed (first tactic) and that your healer targets him for healing as a priority early on in the game. If shield wall is not on - he's screwed.

I've gone through Nightmare mode using Alistair as a main tank without ever needing to chug pots. On my current play through, I don't even really use a healer... I'm using my PC mage as a ghetto "Toss Alistair a heal every now and then while I CC and blow crap up." Dropped Wynne completely because she's totally unnecessary with Alistair tanking (The man's a freaking beast).

Some people have already suggested keeping his STR high enough to meet requirements while pumping the rest into dex. So I'll just give a few pointers on what I do with him...

I think when it comes to Alistair it's all about the gear. If you've played any MMOs *cough* WoW *cough*, you'll understand that Warriors suck until they get good gear, then they become gods. When Alistair gets good gear, he completely out tanks Shale hands down.

This is what I use on him mid game:

Evon the Great's Mail
Bergen's Honor
Earthheart's Portable Bulwark
Wade's Superior Heavy Dragonscale Boots
Lifegiver
Dalish Promise Ring
Creationist's Cord

As you can see, there's definitely much better gear end game (better shield off gaxkang, Cadash Stompers) etc. However, I just finished clearing all of the Denerim quests with Alistair as a main tank, and I think I had to heal him once every fight.

If you want to make Alistair a great tank early, I would strongly recommend getting him Evon the Great's Mail as soon as possible. In my opinion, it's hands down the best tank chest piece in the game. If you don't have Cadash Stompers yet, get the heavy (NOT THE PLATE) version of Wade's Superior Dragon armor and combine it with Evon's for a +5 defense, -20% fatigue set bonus. Evon's on its own makes a noticeable difference in Alistair's tanking performance.

If you don't have a PC tank or don't recruit Loghain, Alistair is the best tank you have, and he's amazing at his job if you gear him correctly. Just make sure you get enough defense skill on the guy as you can. Don't worry so much about his HP pool (he rarely needs a ton of HP considering nothing really hits very hard in this game). If he can't be hit, or takes very little damage when hit, you're golden... and that should ultimately be your goal.

Honestly, I don't get how people say Alistair doesn't work as a tank for them. You get him early enough in the game that you can spec him exactly the way you want a tank to perform. So if you can't spec him right, all I can say is you probably can't spec ANY tank right. He has better starting stats than you would at level 4.

What talents do you have him set up with? In all honesty that can be just as, if not more important than the gear. Shield Wall and Shield tactics are must have's before he's able to just jump into a group of baddies and not die.

Before he gets tactics in particular you have to take real care to manouver him so he isn't getting flanked.

I'm guessing this Evon the Great's Mail is a pc only thing ? its supposed to be sold off of herren but ive played through the game 5 times now and never seen it on him , checked without giving any drake scale , and after giving the first set of scales . i have alistair with all of the shield talents filled out , and champion spec as well .

As far as I know it's not pc only. But it only appears when the shops get upgraded. This happens when you have either 3 allies recruited - or two allies + one other major quest. For instance: if you've done the Circle Tower, Redcliffe, and the Urn.

Before that, no Evon's Mail and Felon's Coat. After the upgrade they will be there. But only until you buy that last set of drakescale. Then the shop shuts permanently.

Make sure you don't turn in all drake scales and dragon skin to Wade before you buy Evon's... otherwise you'll miss out on it.

Hm.... because I usually start by raising Alistair's Str to levels allowing him to wear massive armour, it takes a long time for him to develop enough Dex to have good Defence on his own. Since most of the game is before that point, I think he really needs some party support.

I have Wynne's tactics set to autocast Heroic Defence and Glyph of Warding on him when his health is below 90%.

That normally takes care of my tanking needs.
