Of course a real uptight Star Wars pedant would argue that Star Wars is fantasy, not sci-fi.

I'd say give KOTOR even if you don't like Star Wars.
I don't know who wrote the storyline(Drew Karpyshyn?) but he's far more talented than George Lucas.

LOL!

... Say that to my Force-Facepalm!

D-Low, the 360 might be hard BUT if you dip back into XBOX games (which SHOULD play on the 360) I've got some recommends -

Gladius. This is really a turn-based combat system. Ancient fictional world (mix of Norse, Arabian and Roman themes.)
Jade Empire. Chinese-styled martial arts fantasy from Bioware.
The Bard's Tale. This is definitely good for some laughs if nothing else. I found it fairly fun.
Arx Fatalis. Never played it but heard very good things about it.

You could branch on the 360 and try Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, or Eternal Sonata (all JRPGS) and I thought I had read that Blue Dragon was pretty good.

Consoles are NOT good for CRPGs. Unless you like JRPGs, then the 360 is picking up steam and the PS2 is the place to go.

Hope that helps.

Jade empire is a good suggestion for the Op, not sure how I missed that. It has a fantasy setting (with an Asian twist), character development (not as good as DA but still very good) and more depth than a lot of console games. Also, as Altharas said, it can probably be had for a cheap price since it is older.

What kind of wicked sophistic argument is he going to use to prove the point?

Well... the question is with which jaw he would respond, when looking like Darth Malak afterwards?

Not really. He clearly stated that he's looking for depth, and oblivion is an incredibly shallow and dull game, expecially in it's story, even worse on console, without any mods.

Umm... yeah. There are no other games that are up to date and, excluding other Bioware releases, fully satisfy those requirements. If you have a better suggestion, I would love to hear it.

Oblivion can be very in depth in that its an extremely immersive game. Don't get me wrong, but DA:O is not nearly as immersive. Great nevertheless, but still not super immersive.

I think Jade Empire was around 10 dollars worth of microsoft points on XBox Live. If you like first person perspective (I don't) try Oblivion. Yes I know you can play it in third person but it doesn't really work well

Jade Empire is an excellent suggestion. I got a copy for 7 dollars including 4 dollars shipping on Amazon. It has easily 15 to 20 hours of gameplay if you do everything.

Jade Empire for sure, an Amazing game, one of my Favorite Bioware games, just pick it up as a Game on Demand from Live. You cannot go wrong with this.

I know you said you didn't like Sci-Fi, but KOTOR is awesome and not really like a sci-fi game (except for the robots, and space ships, and laser guns, and ......)

I really liked Lost Oddessy on the 360 - its long, has good characters and story and the combat is cool. Definitely worth a go!!!

"immersive" is often used as an empty catch-word when one has no arguments to praise a game. Oblivion is one of such cases. There's nothing "immersive" in an "empire" that's as small as a modern city, that you can cross from border to border in half an hour, made of empty forests and dungeons that are all identical to each other.
This without even going into one of the worst and most simplistic stories ever seen in an RPG. Shall we talk about the absolute lack of companions and real character interaction that makes it even more dull?
Oblivion lived on it's modding community, that turned a dull game in a fairly good one. Playing it on consoles, without mods, is a waste of time.

Hmm... I would recommend The Witcher (one of the best rpg-s i've played )

Fallout 3 (I know you want something with swords and magic but this is a must have)
Elder Scrolls series (I only played morrowind and Oblivion, both were xtremely good)

Diablo 2 (Havent played 1 but Diablo really is a good game so give it a try)
And finally i too have a question :). I really want to play NWN but is NWN 2 a direct sequel to 1? Or it doesnt matter which one you play first?

(Sorry for bad english) :P

edit: Oh damn i forgot... you want something for X-Box right? ughh, but buy 'em to pc.

You said you don't like the sci-fi scenario, but you should really consider Mass Effect and KotoR 1. They're from BioWare after all, and both fantastic games. If you're really looking for games like DA, you should get a decent PC and play BG 2, also NWN 2, maybe 1 as well, and perhaps the Icewind Dale series. Fallout 2 is a great game as well, has more story and depth than Fallout 3 (which is only really good on a PC as well, with mods).

The Witcher is excellent but is PC only (you said for XBox). If you have a computer that can play it, buy the Witcher.

Having said that....shouldn't this be an off topic discussion?

I thought Lost Odyssey was just another dull and derivative JRPG that added nothing to the genre.

I actually thought the memories that you find were the most entertaining parts of the game and those were just text with still images and music. Very well written.

I'm to lazy see whats been mentioned but I'll just say taht baldurs gate 1+2 and throne of bhaal are some of the greatest games ever made. And another great old one is nwn1. Not a bioware game but you have to play morrowind its so much better than oblivion.

Yep...I would agree with this.

Usually 'open ended' is actually a synonym for a very unstructured game...with loads of been there - done that situations.

And yes...dragon age is nothing like oblivion. I don't know where do you see this 'similarities'.

Planescape torment would be a more suitable choice, becouse of party member interactions at least.
