Just finished playing through the origin story, and I loved it.  The only part about it I did not like was how totally predictable the events in it were.  However, I can think of several reasons why I felt it was predicatble.  For the rest of you, if you were not surprised by how it played out, was it due to:

a) Familiarity with other RPGs that always seem to use the same or similar plot devices
B) Saw the video of the castle fight and knew something was going down
c) Tim Curry = EVIL
d) Saw the video for this origin story beforehand

You have a bunch of loving family at the start = they all gonna die, soon.

Happen in just about any RPG as far as I can remember.

Where do I get the key to the vault in the guard room? I can't seem to find it...

When your mother joins your party, she has the key.

Mother gives it to you if you ask her if there's nothing else we can do when she suggests to flee the castle.

The revenge factor isn't as powerful if you don't have family die.

Why couldn't my mother stay with me? I would have preferred an option to convince her to come with me rather than staying with my dead father - make it a coercion roll or something. An extremely herd one at that. But, make it possible. I thought she kicked butt. Why deny players that option for gaining a companion. I still would have really wanted to kill Howse.

The best part of the origin was when Fergus tells his son something like, "Don't worry, you will see a sword soon enough." Huge, delicious foreshadowing there. I already got the feeling you would be betrayed due to it being a generic RPG plot device, but that sealed the deal. Sure enough, a few minutes later I found the boy dead - he saw a sword very up close.

I really enjoyed this story. Yes, it was predictable, but one NPC said something at one point about this situation sounding like every bad adventure tale you'd ever heard and I laughed out loud. I was sad to lose my mother and father though. :(

LOVED the intros. I played through 4 of them so far just because the human one was so good. The others didn't disappoint either. Great story line so far in the game.

My wife was laughing at me last night for cussing out some of the characters lol.

Seriously.  You'd think these people would have figured this stuff out by now.

Father and older brother going to war - CHECK
Solemn goodbye speeches - CHECK
"Carry on the family name" speech - CHECK
Hero left in charge of the family home - CHECK
Home breached via treacherous ally - CHECK
Hero recruited by an elite order of protectors - CHECK

"OK, son, your older brother is going to stay here and guard the fortress.  His wife, his kids, your mother, and you are going to stay with relatives.  You're not joining jack squat.  I'm probably going to die, so let's say our goodbyes now.  Oh, and make sure to finish putting the deathtraps in all the decoy tunnels and secret entrances before you leave."
