You can easily go full melee build for both kroguard and batguard when playing platinum. You just need to know what enemies to pick with that melee. Also full melee build doesn't mean you don't use your gun. I actually even have my smashguard set for melee and it's quite enjoyable on platinum.

 I just played Collectors/Gold with the Smashguard and only died once. Yep he is better than the Volguard who would die so much more and do less damage

The Volguard simply has too high a skill-curve to be mastered
by peasants such as yourself. A properly-played Volguard would
be picking you up off of the ground every time you kissed the dirt
and be outscoring you by at least 2x.

Funny how this is so relevant... As a vanguard he doesn't have a lot of synergy. Phoenix Vanguard needed different powers besides the same two that the adept had. That whole dlc was littered with characters who only had one power different from their counterpart.

check my manifest bro, I have the weapons(Reegar Carbine X) and equipment (Cyclonic mod 4) to make any class shine. And no, you wouldn't outscre my smashguard.
