A bigger home ship for Mass Effect 4?

Before I start, I want to point out that Bioware has said they don't want another Shepard for ME4, which I assume means a character that's not a soldier. Which is great! I'd really like to see that.

One thing I hope remains though is the 'home ship'. The Normandy was such a cool part of the series, and I've kinda been pondering what the ME4 protagonist will get to fly.

Which led me to wonder, what if it was a bigger ship? What if instead of a frigate class ship, he/she commanded something that was dreadnaught sized? Maybe a colony ship or exploration ship?

Anyways, discuss!

Or a small ship and just huge hubs. And what else would he be if not a soldier, pirate or merc?

The Normandy's fine. I'm hoping they'll bring it back as your ship in Mass Effect 4, one way or another. Maybe have it as retired military warship turned smuggling vessel, or something...

As for the "new Shepard"... I'm just hoping we have a customizable protagonist. I've been a little worried as to just what Bioware meant when they said the new protagonist won't be the "next Shepard".

If ME4 will be a sequel I think we should keep the Normandy SR2. Old ship with a new crew a 100 years later. And somewhere in the story we could resurrect EDI somehow. :)

I think the Normandy is big enough. Supposedly there are other Normandy class ships. Granted, those are SR-1s, but still

I think they should keep the ship relatively small. Anything too large wouldn't make a lot of sense as a vessel to explore the galaxy in, as larger ships would also have greater fuel consumption.

If the main character is a soldier, it should be another high-tech frigate.

If the main character is a mercenary or pirate, it should be something of roughly similar class, but nowhere near as high tech as the Normandy. The interior of the ship should feel a little more beat up and rough-around-the-edges, and less technologically advanced than the military warships of its era.

If the main character is a merchant captan or smuggler, the ship should be a small freighter. Basically it should be a ship designed more with commerce in mind than warfare. Like the mercenary or pirate ship it should be a little rougher and more beat up than a military ship.

Speed should be factors in the design or upgrades of a pirate or smuggler ship however, as they'd want a capability to outrun military or security vessels patroling the trade lanes. Pirates would also want a capability to outrun fleeing merchant vessels.

Stealth could be a factor with the design or upgrades of a pirate or smuggler ship as well, depending on the era it exists in. If it exists in an era where stealth upgrades are still relatively rare however and limited to the most high tech of military vessels, it shouldn't be a feature with a smugger or pirate ship.

Basically I think whatever ship the protagonist of ME4 ends up in should be tailored to that character's backstory.

I disagree, I would prefer to keep the ship at roughly the same size it has now, but for Bioware to eliminate the need for loading screens as I move around the ship.

Also, I'd rather have huge hubs rather than a huge ship. Mass Effect 1 had a massive hub world in the Citadel and lots of mini ones. A return to that would be lovely.

I wouldn't mind cruiser size just about double the size of the SR2. I am hoping the next protaganist is a SPECTRE but unlike Shep they get to do missions in different ways like a stealth mission, diplomacy, or guns blazing. and instead of being a psuedo SPECTRE like shep who just had the name and perks you have to report to the council deal with the politics and help or refuse council members requests (ME1 refuse Hacket's side quests). as for the ship you get a choice between asari, human, turian, and salarian and you build your crew and companions from there. you could even have a origin story that leads you into SPECTREship, say you are a turian you go through SPECTRE training or something. but PCs are a different story that I won't get into right now.

edit I wouldn't mind a return to massive hub worlds either.

Perhaps a few more rooms or at least making it feel bigger with less loading screens although I would also want more space to be used. The walkway from Joker to the map was just padding. I wouldn't mind if for some missions we explored different parts of the ship a bit like Joker did in ME2 for that mission only

Pretty much smaller ship like first Normandy but customisable interior - not excessive build own ship as maybe to much but definitely have ability to allot cabins for various facilities, add decorations and customise equipment.

I actually like idea that ship would be smaller but the main hub would be a disused space station from where you prep missions etc.

I personally like the idea of a ship that's not state of the art like the Normandy, but this old beat up rust-bucket that shakes like a rattle when going into FTL and is held together with spit, wire and duct-tape.

Or maybe even the Normandy again... when she's about 100-200 years old and has seen neglect and lack of proper maintenance for about the same amount of time.

Actually, it does open up some interesting avenues. Shepard has been an elite soldier, spectre with all kinds of special access to all kind of advanced weaponry and a unique ship. It'd be interesting to start out as someone more 'normal'. Think freighter captain, mercenary, pirate, hell even a colonist. That might give us a look at the Mass Effect universe from quite a different perspective. Doors open for spectres, doors close for normal people... unless they're clever.

after the citadel dlc i would like to see the PC have a home on the citadel or omega as their main base but in terms of a ships i would like it to be based on your character's race but still be frigate sizes.

that or let us have a reaper because that can in no way go wrong.

I still opt for one massive hub like Babylon 5.

But I seem to be alone in that notion xD

Considering in 50 - 100 yrs the Normandy would be in mothballs, old tech, and there is no way synthesis is going to be canon and don't ask me why, we really just need a ship the size of the Serenity. More hub worlds -- Thessia, Palaven, Earth, Omega, the Citadel (under Construction)

I would like to see a return more to the ME2 as far as RPG goes. I know they won't go back to ME1 which I'd really like, so I'd settle for ME2.

I hope we get a bigger ship. I am also hoping we get to steal that ship, and in our haste to escape with the ship we open a dormant relay that brings in the big bad guy/guys. :)

Totally fine with the Normandy's SR2 size. Just add escape pods and maybe some more crew quarters so it doesn't feel like EVERYONE has on duty except 4 of those 40 guys - 'cause only that many beds are available.

The Normandy is pretty good size wise, so something similar would be good.

Heck, they could go even smaller (SR1 sized) and I would be fine.

don't really care about the size of the new ship.

although , after Citadel, if the new protagonist is an 'average person' then I hope we have a home of some sort AND a ship...

Yeah I gotta admit I'd love a destroyer or dreadnought.
