amazing how gaming just grows in popularity the more it's stripped down of content. wtf kind of ass backwards planet are we living on?

I am going to be flamed for this but gaming should have stayed and remained the stuff introverts, nerds and geeks play. It should have stayed as something people do because they love doing it, because they love making it and not because it makes $$$$$$

Well, no one works for free. But yeh, games were better back when the companies weren't min-maxing but instead were trying to put out quality games that their audiences would enjoy.

Are purchases of SimCity still disabled on Amazon? It looked like it was enabled when I checked. What a fiasco. Great work EA.

Amazon is selling it again. But there is a warning under the title: "Important Note on "SimCity"
Many customers are having issues connecting to the "SimCity" servers. EA is actively working to resolve these issues, but at this time we do not know when the issue will be fixed. Please visit https://help.ea.com/en/simcity/simcity for more information. "

Quoting the 5 star review rated most helpful here:

You'd think I'd be mega unhappy like everyone else at the constant waiting and lack of actually being able to play a game I purchased.

Well, you'd be wrong.

The hours upon hours since launch that I haven't been able to log in, whether it be sitting in queues, or server busy messages, or just plain old not working screens, I've managed to do a heap of things that I never do when I'm locked in my man cave playing video games.

I've washed the dishes, the laundry, changed the oil in the car, mopped the floors, dusted, did a spot of gardening, greeted my children who I hadn't really seen since Christmas, walked the dog, asked how my wife's day has been and listened to the entire response, restocked the groceries and many more things! My family has never been happier that they've got a father and husband again.

In fact, I feel like Simcity has given me a new lease on life. This wouldn't have been possible without the seemingly crazy decision to have constant online connections and server side save points even for single player.

So I can only thank EA and Maxis. Your failures have been my rewards. 5 stars!

 Apparently Simcity 5 saves marriages and brings families together. <3

100% hit the nail on the head with that. I've always thought that gaming was just destroyed when it became something cool. At least back then we had quality games.

And Diablo III breaks up marriages. I think this always online DRM really shakes up couples.

There have always been bad games.

I think the Diablo 3 launch will be remembered as "worse" as Blizzard fans might have felt a betrayal of trust.
EA didn't ( shouldn't?) have as much credability to loose.

I haven't played SimCity but unless it:

1.) Locked you out of servers for days until Blizz decided to reboot them(kept character stuck in the world randomly and login attempts wouldn't 'boot' the character)

2.) Login error galore

3.) Microstutter lag in the game due to serverside asset not loading properly and syncing with the clients(it was almost unplayable in peak hours)

4.) Major security breach where hackers used phising on Blizz's login and stole thousands of accounts

5.) Random errors that kept you locked out of the game

Diablo 3 would easily be worse. I highly doubt SC is that bad. Diablo 3 is literally the worst launch I've ever seen for a game technical wise and it still had major server problems a month into the game. That's not including all the gameplay issues it had.

 Can anybody verify this?
http://www.p4rgaming.com/?p=1473

Apparently, EA has been paying people in China to spam message boards and reviewers to positively appraise Sim City and their DRM...

If that's the case then EA has sunk to a new (but not unexpected) low. That actual money they can spend to put out an actual good game.

Haha.

I've seen gaming sites post articles about them doing this before. One guy said EA hired him to 'troll' Call of Duty in favor of Battlefield 3 on message board. Of course, nobody could validate if that was true or not. That would be pretty funny if it is true.

LOL the comments under that article are hilarious. This has to be a joke? But yea, I definitely read something similar for Battlefield 3. The guy basically said it was part of EA's massive marketing budget for the game.

Oh god, kill it with fire/acid/plague.

ET is credited with being the proverbial straw that caused the video game crash of 1983.

EDIT: And let's not even discuss Custer's Revenge.

Hmmm, given the big target on EA's back, I actually started to question it once I read the quote from the EA spokesperson (the whole quote just seems... off)

Lucy Bradshaw recognizes that it's a serious issue, and has even conceded that it's entirely fair for review scores to be negatively affected by this (even if they think the game itself is quite solid).

EA has also also suspended marketing (i.e. stop bringing in revenue for sales) to help take care of the mess and stop feeding more people into the pipe, excaberating problems further.

It seems weird for these (appropriate) measures to happen in response, only to have some apparent EA spokesperson go "We'd never have them talk up how awesome always online DRM is. There's no reason as it's clearly awesome."

Feel free to conclude I'm just a shill defending my company.

Apparently Not

I'm not sure how much I would believe a source from Reddit/4Chan though or the website you posted for that matter. It's still funny if true lol.

What's interesting in this article is it talks about EA using Asia now to do some marketing and now you're seeing these Chinese spammers come up. Hmm. That article was written a long time ago too.

Anyways, I think that original article you linked was just meant to be funny lol.

I think it's safe to say that EA recognizes this as a snafu:

I could care less about the marketing thing. I find it hilarious how much money this move cost them financially. Gonna try and ruin my hobby with online? Enjoy the massive monetary loss for exclusively doing just that. Would have never happened if it wasn't for that, and that alone.

Now the reputation of the game is tarnished, and rightly so. It doesn't work. It deserves those terrible ratings. And an interesting dynamic is that so-called "casual gamers" are mad. They are naturally rejecting it. Too much of a hassle for mom to set up for 10 year old Jimmy.

I didn't even know a new SimCity was coming out until the week before launch, shows how much time I don't spend in a game store or on game sites. But just my thoughts on the problems with the game, I am guessing EA didn't realize how popular a new SimCity game would actually be, I mean how often did you ever hear anyone mention that they really wished a new one was coming out?

I also don't get why people are ****ting all over it being always online and "multiplayer" that seems like a plus, sure you were always connected to other cities, but those cities had random encounters with yours and rarely did you ever do anything outside your own city. This way it feels more like a real world situation. I like the idea of having a friend build a city where they don't care about pollution and I just buy electricity from them and put up casino after casino. Or when you're city is just growing and a damned monster attacks and wipes out your only fire department... thank goodness for the neighbor cities.. hopefully they send a fire truck or two.

****ty launches is pretty typical in the gaming industry lately. Personally I dont mind them as long as they are fixed quickly, and even better if you are compensated for any issues.

No reason to hold this against EA when there as so many other good reasons to hate them.

^ Though in some respect I'd agree with above posters, in principle always-online is a bad bad decision. EA needs to slightly burn because of their business-comes-first nasty models of conduct, even if they do make Dragon Age games for which I'm a fanboy.
