Speaking of Isabella, in The World of Thedas art, Isabella is depicted as being rather on the pale side.

lol, they were GIANTS before, but since they got horns and grey skin they are now BEASTS

They have giant horns and snort like a bull. Throw in scenes with the Arihsok pacing and grunting around and you've got a very animalistic depiction of the Qunari. Zen-like on the surface... but a growling beast just below.

I mean... heck, Varric calls them ox-men.

I actually wound up liking the change. But it was still very bothering. And they at least attempt at retcon band-aid, by saying that Sten was a non-horned Qunari.

Again, changing everyone in Orlais to pixie fairies would bother me just as much as if they changed them to be Hispanic. Its the idea of a huge change to the setup and appearance of things for no narrative reason. In the case of the Qunari, they said it was their original plan to make them like that and that they didn't have the engine built for it, so it was a pill that could be swallowed. Changing the appearance and ethnicity of people without any explanation or reason is silly.

Perhaps the ME team. They actually did feature black/hispanic characters and openly gay characters in their games. The DA team just made everyone bisexual and decided that black characters don't really matter since the engine couldn't render anyone that didn't already look white... which is ****ing hilarious and sad at the same time.

Since we're on the subject, Vega's constant usage of the word "loco" (along with other Spanish words that were unnecessary for his dialogue) gave me the impress that BioWare was trying to say, "Hey, Vega is hispanic! He even says 'loco' as proof!" And let's not forget about what BioWare did to Jacob. Might as well put Maury himself in the game to give a lie detector & dna test.

So, I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise if people in thedas start changing skin tones randomly henceforth.

People tend to look at appearances from their own background and heritage. Looking for their own reflection in the mirror and their point of view on things.

If they are represented in appearance, they look at how they are portrayed, and how that is done according to their point of view and beliefs. Human behaviour for sure.

Preset thinking and common used expressions that relate to nationalities and race are things that need to be handled with care and consideration imho when referred to in a media like games which are played by people all over the world. Although if one wants to find a stick to hit with it can always be found of course by hairsplitting contents......

It's easy to say 'it's just a game, they shouldn't get offended' when you're not a part of the group that is underserved by media. 'What's the problem?' you ask yourself, 'I wouldn't mind if some characters were black, why do they care if the characters are white?'

But that's the thing, really. It's not 'some characters are white' it's '95% of characters are white'. And male. And straight. It's all part of the same problem - we, as an industry, are pretty bad at being inclusive. It's getting better, but slowly, and there's a reason why stuff like #1reasonwhy resonates so heavily. We are still, at our core, an incredibly insular and exclusive industry that pushes anyone who doesn't fit into the standard 'straight, white male' demographic to the fringes.

So rather than saying 'it's not an issue!', try and understand how frustrating it would be to be in a world where it's always subtly hinted that straight, white and male is the 'normal' way to be, because that's the majority of what's represented in media. And then maybe don't take umbrage when folks call the industry out on these issues.

This is why BioWare is a great studio, probably the best, for diversity in its games, you guys have a level of empathy required for this kind of thing to deliver content that respects diversity without exploiting it with stereotypes.

You can see it's genuine when its staff can write so eloquently as this.

Nice one *thumbs up*

Well bisexual people deserve to be represented too. Nothing wrong with them being over represented in one game :)

Maybe there will be more black people in DA3, it's good to see it being recognized though.

HOORAY FOR TOKENISM!

If I have a person of African descent standing next to me, I am DEFINITELY not racist!

If I have a gay person standing nearby, I am DEFINITELY not homophobic!

My, this all makes so much sense. You backwards honkeys need to learn some tolerance.

I can't blame them as the Arsihok spent half of the battle trying to stampede the pc to death. It looked like a bull fight.

I find it interesting that posters say there were not many blacks (I will use that term) in medieval Europe. The Romans actively recruited people identified as Moors for its army. Those soldiers served in England, France Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Poland. Saint Maurice (Egyptian) was the legendary leader of Roman Theban Legion in the third century.
In the 8th century Moorish soldiers cross over from Africa into parts of Portugal, Spain and France where they obtained many swift victories.
In Aurthurian tale Sir Morien is described as dark of face and limb.

I am all for diversity if the story warrants it. Gamers like and want to see themselves and their ethnicity reflected in the games they play.
Does skin color matter? Yes it does. It will continue to matter until attitudes and beliefs change. That change is slowly happening. The world has come a long way, but still has a long way to go.

And then you acknolwedge that there is no such thing as an unprejudiced person... ah, I'm dreaming again now.

No, no she wasn't.  She was the second darkest skin shade in the character creator.  The lighting in the Pearl may have made her look lighter than she appears in the toolset, but at no time did she appear "white."

And these things only change when media changes to represent people properly, which is why diversity in games is important in my humble opinion.

Why is the Pearl's lighting so bad? How is that conducive to sexy times?
