I won't deny that on occasion I am guilty of internalizing stereotypes, or of insensitivity to the plights of various minority groups. But I do my best to check my behaviour, rather than excusing it by saying something stupid like: "Oh well, there's no point in being friends with a non-white person, because that would just be tokenism".

And just to clarify. It is not "tokenism" when a minority character is present. It is only "tokenism" if said minority character is relegated to the background or disposed of early, and receives little to no actual development, instead drawing on stereotypes. Isabela is not a token. The bisexual party members are not tokens.

If a game or other media product is making a genuine effort to be more inclusive, then the minority characters will not be tokens.

I can understand why they deleted sexual preferences in DA2, it was an attempt to please everyone. Maybe it sounded good on paper, but the end result made me see the characters as more like play things for the PC rather than real characters with predetermined preferences.

Tokenism is when the primary reason the character exists as being [black, gay, whatever] is to counteract any accusation of prejudice towards the forementioned groups. It is a hollow and superficial means to deter a (often also hollow and superficial) allegation.

So, in order to appear like we do not judge by [race, sexual orientation, etc.] when creating characters, we judge almost entirely by [race, sexual orientation, etc.]. Beautiful, isn't it? Machiavelli would be proud.

I wonder if DA3 will have a token heterosexual character...

Oh hush with your bigotry. Making all the characters bi obviously gave them more character integrity, not less. Duh. 

Technically they are playthings (think about it for a second) but yes, you would like an extra level of plausibility in a game that is all about believable and relatable characters rather than an assortment of bisexual bang puppets. But that is an inherently bigoted concept as I like to call anything that does not support it bigoted.

A chromosone that becomes and/defines an alternate human being, while your skin tone will be little more than pigmentation forever. The color of your skin defines your being only so much as you imagine it to, so I'm not seeing the relativity between the two.
