The weirdest thing of them all is how aliens' military ranking is exactly the same as the one used by the Alliance Navy. Also Shep, being the ship's commanding officer, should never go on away missions to shoot stuff, I'm guessing they got that idea from Kirk's actions during Star Trek.

In some countries you cant even get a higher rank without aditional education.

In the Danish navy, once you complete you officers education, you become (translated) Sealieutenant. After some time, you get promoted to the second lieutenant rank. To get promoted further you have to complete the second officers education thereby earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander and can after some time be promoted to Commander. If you want to, you can get a third education and be promoted again.

So to be promoted from Gunnery Sergeant to Lt. Commander she would have to spend at least 4-5 years on education. (if i remember correctly) and aditional 4-8 years working.

As a side note. I belive that a Lieutenant with his/her own command (eg. a submarine) can be called captain in the Danish marine.

for some reason i believe ash was demoted after the coup. i completed the coup last night and my femshep met her in the dock and referred to her Lieutenant not Lieutenant Commander. to it does make she did draw a gun on her commanding. yea she was doing her job. but i think the alliance to do something to her.

^ I don't think so. IIRC if you don't recruit Ash then she becomes an Alliance war asset, which I'm pretty sure still lists her as a Lt Commander.

Honestly I think it's just a detail the writers didn't pay an awful lot of attention too.

rtfc - read the ... lovely ... codex.

I'm going to go with "the Codex is wrong" here.  There's no "Commander" rank there but in game throughout the entire series Shepard has been "Commander" both in verbal discussions and written items like the memorial wall scene.

Joker holds the rank of Flight Lieutenant. That's not even listed in the codex chart.

Lazy writing and inconsistencies abound.

as with seemingly every detail in ME it's just been confused, afterall there are plenty of things in the codex that never show up in the game e.g. gardian defence lasers (where were they at end of ME1?)

I don't know how they got gunnery chief for Ash rank from nowhere in the Marine Corps Image IPB to Lieutenant Commander, which is a Navy rank.Image IPB  In the US, Canada and Britain; there are no staff commander. And I don't think Shepard even have the rank of lieutenant commander anymore, I think it's commander now. Which is above the rank of major and a Lieutenant Commander.

They mixed em together.

Her jump in rank in 3 years (enlisted gunnery officer to lt freakin commander? srsly?) is flat out impossible though. She has neither time in grade nor time in service, plus has ties to a possible cerberus traitor.

I'm surprised they didn't make her an 1st/2nd LT... that would have been very believable, (and this is actually what I assumed when i initiailly played the game) she became an officer. Grats! but same rank as shepard? cmon nao

I'm guessing that at some point they figured out Ash shooting through the ranks to Lieutenant Commander so quickly was stupid, so they quietly lowered it to the just "sorta implausible" Lieutenant rank.

Yeah I can somewhat buy Kaidan becoming a major. It's not not as WTF inducing as Ashley's jump.

yeah the codex is not completely correct.

as for ashley's jump in rank i'd put that down to a combination of "the details have been lost in time, it happened so long ago" and a bit of help from anderson.

Well, let's look at it. This is a time of war, it has been since Sovereign even if there was a brief lull in fighting. She was part of the team that saved the Citadel, and though the light shone on Shepard, the rest of the team is known to have been there as well. That event boosted the Alliance onto the galactic stage, she would get huge props for that.

Hackett is a serious backer of the Normandy and her crew, he would show a lot more trust in Ashley than Admirals and others who didn't know much about her.

She would also be propped up by Anderson.

So, you have a lot of officers dying at the battle of the Citadel, a rising star in the military and a few key supporters who want to put people in charge who know the enemy and have seen action, and you get Lt. Commander Ashley Willams. Sure it was a meteoric rise but there was obviously openings. It's not that unbelievable that a combination of nepotism (from third parties) and opportunity would lead to her increased rank.

Then why isn't Kaidan an admiral? I mean she goes up 6 ranks and he goes up 2? that's a bit lopsided. I really want to believe that she was only supposed to be an LT. I'm sure there were many more people ahead of her in line for promotions. Not that many people died against Sovereign
