Did he always believe in Synthesis or did it only creep into his mind when he became indoctrinated?

I always thought he did what he did so he could stay alive after the Reapers purge the galaxy again, or am I missing something here?

Well, he might have originally intended to make a deal with Sovereign but I'm not entirely sure if he had Synthesis as a possible solution at the time of meeting Sovereign. So, I wonder if it sprung up as the result of a suggestion via indoctrination.
