Our minds seem to work in a very similar vein.  I needed a different ending/headcanon, (I love this word btw) so I took time out from paying, contracted work to write a Mass Effect story.  Sheer madness, but very fun.  It features Shepard and Kaidan and became a reflextion on the price of fame, PTSD and survivor's guilt.  Also, the madness associated with a public wedding.  When I can come up for air my webmanager will start posting it.  But meanwhile -- back to the script.

Citadel DLC is my epilogue to the game.
_______________________________

However if it were played in the middle of the game, Renegade femShep, having had visions of the future and of the ending, would let clone Shepard take credit for the ending, and just make sure that had her digs outfitted with kinetic barrier fields and armor shutters and door for when the reapers attack the Citadel. There our team could bunker down and hold out while Clone Shepard fights her way to the beam, kills The Illusive Man, and probably chooses control. And after it's over, we emerge from the bunker and make up something, you know, since the palm print is different I guess I have to be Shepard's twin sister. Life goes on, right? As long as Liara can drain the bank account.

Apologies, my computer seemed to decide my earlier comment needed to post twice. And there appears to be no way to delete the second post. Sorry, going back to work now.

Since I don't believe in making up your own version of things just because you don't like them, I think of this more as what I'd logically think would happen:

- after high EMS destroy, wake up, stumble around until someone comes by to help you out
- spend 6 months in the hospital, only conscious half the time
- get visitations from everyone constantly
- help Joker get over losing EDI
- struggle with personal regret after you find out all the Geth died
- when you're finally able to walk, probably have to go to some sort of press conference, followed by god knows how many award ceremonies
- if you told Garrus you'd never give up the adventure, you and the crew reboard the Normandy and run around helping out
- if you said you'd retire, you'd do just that: hand the Normandy over to the VS, go fishing with Zaeed and Garrus somewhere, then plop myself down on my couch in my sweet apartment a cuddle with Tali

Shepard vanishes. Her last transmission is "What do you need me to do?" to Hackett. After that, nothing. But the Reapers stopped attacking, and retreated to the edge of space. They tend to run when anyone gets too close.

Now and then, the Citadel plays oddly apt advertisements, especially around Garrus and her old crew. They moved on. Kaidan and Liara got married after a long, halting courtship. Miranda went into politics, much to her disgust. Jack continued teaching, training many protegees. Garrus eventually began dating again, and found Tali waiting for him. The two of them were very happy, though they both missed Shepard. The whole crew watched out for Kolyat and Falere, much to their occasional disgust.

And what became of Shepard, only the geth, the rachni, and eventually EDI knew.

(That's the short version!)

After the reuniting with the Normandy Crew, John Shepard decides go to Rannoch with Tali and build her the home he promised. Agreeing to stay on as the Normandy's captain for a few months to help out with reconstruction efforts and keeping stability, he eventually retired from the retires from the alliance (but keeps his spectre status). Exactly one year after then end of the Reaper war, Shepard proposes to Tali, and are soon married in a ceremony that melds both human and quarian customs. Wanting children (but being biologically incapable of doing so), Shepard and Tali adopt a quarian girl who they name Ria two years after the end of the Reaper war.

In the many years since then Shepard and Tali spend most of their time in peace on Rannoch, with Shepard occasionally running spectre missions every few years or so, and the two of them attending the yearly reunion and party that the former Normandy Crew holds on the citadel every year (in the appartment that is basically Shepard's and Tali's vacation home)

22 years after the war, Ria'Shepard begins her pilgramige (a practice still held by quarians out of tradition), which is the basis for my current ongoing fanfic http://www.fanfictio...Effect-Pathways (ah hah, shameless self promotion)

Seeing as we don't actually see CloneShep die in my game she pulls a Kai Leng and survives by safely landing on top of a passing car. Since this happens right after the attempted coup CloneShep has the whole last half of the game to join and help Shepard fight the Reapers and finds herself agreeing with the way Shepard's doing things and did things the first half of the game. On Earth after Shep gets lasered by Harbinger CloneShep decides she was wrong about Shepard and runs into the beam in her place eventually choosing control.

Shepard and Liara marry and move to Thessia where with the help of Javik Liara begins teaching a corrected history of the asari.

For my main Shepard:

Shepard is recovered on the citadel, reuniting with the crew. But she's pretty badly injured, and emotionally ravaged. All the fighting and stress has really eaten away at her. While she can't quite remember the Catalyst- she does remember shooting Anderson. It haunts her. My Shepard is an earthborn/sole survivor- her entire life has been running from crisis to crisis. She doesn't really know how to deal with life without some sort of danger lurking. For a long time, it feels like the 'fight' has been knocked out of her.

But she gets better in time. She turns down promotions from the alliance and resigns, but leaves a stellar recommendation for Kaidan to take over the Normandy. And whatever letters of recommendation she can leave to the rest of the alliance crew.

In my mind space traffic is slowed, but not halted. Trips that were instant now take weeks or months to complete. Drive cores are adapted with reaper technology to increase the speed of FTL. After taking two years or so to decompress, she feels able enough to start working. By then, races would have started bickering again over resources and the economic shattering the reapers left. Shepard becomes an ambassador, with her first assignment to try and smooth things over with the krogan over god knows what.

Citadel council furnishes her with a ship- but she's still not quite willing to take up command again. She leaves that to Garrus, who captains the ship and adopts his own cast of strange motley crewmen. They have adventures and fight crime. But mostly Shepard spends the rest of her life as an ambassador, representing different planets for various issues in the name of keeping the peace.

For my other Shepard:

After having been a complete jerk throughout his entire career, killing or betraying many of his friends, and generally known as 'that ****'; he sacficies himself to save the galaxy and ensure that everyone has to worship him from now until the end of time.

His "friends" are less than pleased, but what can you do.

After recovering from her wounds, femshep tells the Alliance to f**k off and dieImage IPB

Her and Samantha eventually get married and find a large house on Vancouver Island overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
They have 4 daughters 2 from femshep and 2 from Samantha.. They also get two golden retrievers and named them Smith and Wesson.

With the royalties femshep receives, she starts the Elizabeth Nancy Shepard Foundation to help families rebuild after the war.

After taking control of the Reapers, Shepard directs them into rebuilding all that was lost followed by moving the Citadel back into its original location. He then orders all Reapers to return to dark space minus a couple vanguards to watch over the galaxy. He then monitors all communications coming and going from the Citadel.

Several years later, he calls his old friend Garrus Vakarian to a remote part of the Citadel. Surprised, Garrus asks may questions about what happened, after some answers ,mostly vague, Shepard asks him if he wants to continue helping save the galaxy by acting as an agent for him as his eyes and hears in places he has no information from.

Garrus's Response:

"So basically you want me to be the Saren to your Sovereign?"

Still working on the rest.

 Canon ending:  MEHEM

Shepard retires from teh Alliance and steps down as a Spectre shortly after the war.  He marries Ashley, who assumes command of the Normandy.  For several years, Shep serves as a diplomat, as the relay network and the Citadel are repaired, representing human interests and making sure everyone plays nice.  He turns down an offer to be the next human Councilor, and he and Ash end up retiring to Elysium once contact with the colony is reestablished.

Shepard is struggling for breath in the rubble of the Citadel, and it looks like the end...until she remembers two things a certain turian told her.

"...if you'll excuse the insubordination, your boyfriend has an order for you.  Come back alive.  It'd be an awfully empty galaxy without you."

And, the far more prudent...

"...trick that we organics like to call 'holding a little extra back for emergencies'..."

Shepard harnesses what is left of her diminished strength and focus, and forms a biotic barrier and detonates it, sending the rubble off of her in a brilliant  and loud fashion.  Garrus, who had been scrounging through the rubble like a mad varren, sees it and rushes to the source along with the recovery teams in the area.  He holds her in his arms, keening with joy, and just before she passes out...

"...orders?"

"Don't ever do that to me again."

"...no promises..."

Anything after that...requires a full fic.

 Nice thread OP.

In one of my headcanons, Shep pretty much uses the info gleaned from the Leviathans to discover the Catalyst and wipes it out, crippling the Reaper collective and giving the galactic races the edge they need to launch a final attack on the Reapers, wiping out the vast majority of them and causing what few do survive to begin retreating back to Dark Space. Attention is then spent on defeating smaller pockets of remaining Reaper forces by trapping them strategically in systems that have been evacuated using the Citadel's control over the relays. Anderson dies in the showdown against TIM during Shep's time at the Citadel, but Shep recovers the body once the Catalyst is destroyed and later receives Anderson's apt through his will. Exeunt the events of Citadel, and then onward to rebuilding the galaxy and wiping out the last pockets of indoctrinated forces.

Shepard is found and recovered from the rubble in the Citadel where he then recuperates. After healing from his injuries he learns of the rebuilding that is taking place. Though the losses were many, the vicious cycle has finally been broken and reconstruction of the affected planets and relays has begun. During his recover, the Normandy has been fully repaired and has made it's way back to the reconstructed Citadel with her crew to find their Commander. The team temporarily separates to help with the reconstruction. Once Shepard recovers, the crew comes back together where they mourn the loss of friends (Legion, Thane, Mordin, EDI, Anderson) and they take off again in the Normandy as more adventures would come their way. Their job is never over from protecting the galaxy. Just a routine mission.

Shepard: After being rescued in the Citadel by Alliance marines, he recovered in a hospital in London. He helps with the reconstruction and aiding those in need on Earth until his ship, The Normandy, arrives with his crew. Together they help with the reconstruction and ultimately take off again in the Normandy to new adventures. He would eventually marry Miranda Lawson, where they settled down on Illium together. Once his life on the Normandy ended, he would consider becoming an Ambassador for Humans on the Council.
Miranda Lawson: Hearing of Shepard's survival she rushed to meet her love. They found each other on the newly reconstructed Citadel while Shepard was helping refugees. While the crew temporarily separated to see to personal matters, Miranda was offered a job in Alliance Intelligence for her intellect and her knowledge of Cerberus tactics. She was ultimately able to finally shut down Cerberus and all other branches of it. When the crew came back together, she resigned from her position in Alliance Intelligence to join Shepard on the Normandy as his First Mate as she did on the Suicide Mission. She and Shepard shared many adventures together, eventually getting married, with Garrus being the best man, and settling down on Illium where they live happily ever after.
Garrus Vakarian: Once the Reaper War was over, Garrus returned to London to find his Commander . Once the team split for a short while, Garrus returned to Palaven where he found his family safe. He was greeted as a hero. He joined a special police force while on Palaven to help victims of the war. He returned to the Citadel to rejoin the Normandy where its Commander and crew waited for him. He continued to serve with Shepard on many adventures as his right hand man.
Tali: Tali returned to her homeworld Rannoch after the events of the Reaper War to begin preparing for life on their homeworld. However, she felt that the Normandy was her true home, and its crew her family. When the team rejoined, she jumped at the opportunity and joined Shepard on many more adventures.
Liara: Liara's knowledge of anicent technologies helped when studying the Reaper corpses. She remained the Shadow Broker, eventually leaving the Normandy and residing on Illium to continue her profession. She occassionally joins the Normandy on some missions.
Ashley Williams: Ash went on to pursue new adventures while in the Alliance, leading many special missions. Forever a member of the Normandy, she occasionally rejoins the team when she can, but duty calls.
James Vega: After the Reaper War, James was inducted into the N7 program where he quickly made a name for himself with his strength and his war strategies. He eventually left the Normandy crew to continue his journey as an N7 soldier, owing his knowledge to the time he served under Commander Shepard, a fellow N7 marine.
Jack: After the war was over, Jack returned to Grissom Academy where she remained a highly respected teacher, even if her methods were unorthodox. She was able to meet up with Shepard on the Citadel, but it would also be the last time she would be with the crew again, saying farewell to the Normandy.
Urdnot Wrex: Wrex returned to Tuchanka after helping the humans with the rebuilding of the cities on Earth. His homeworld prospered under his leadership, leading the clans to help one another. Tuchanka became green again and the cries and laughs of young Krogan offspring filled the air on the once-depressing planet.
Grunt: Grunt returned home to Tuchanka where he began the leader of a newly formed Aralakh company. He proved that being a tank bred was no handicap and was known to be one of the strongest Krogans on Tuchanka, of course not stronger the Wrex. He left Tuchanka to rejoin Shepard's crew as he deemed Shepard the man most worthy of his attention. After all, Shepard did choose the best enemies to kill...
Javik: Javik spent the remaining years of his life learning about the "primitives" and how they had evolved and what their lives were like. Once reconstruction was over, he rejoined Shepard on the Normandy. He eventually resigned from the team where he goes to Kahje and lives among the hanar until his death.
Jacob Taylor: Jacob rejoined the Alliance to help with the rebuilding process, never stepping foot on the Normandy again. He raised his son with Brynn and enjoyed his time back with the Alliance.
Zaeed Massani: Zaeed retired from his life as a mercenary, he eventually signed on with the Alliance in an effort to do some good for others, a trait he learned from Shepard. He eventually retires and enjoys life by the beach, his rifle not far from his reach.
Kasumi Goto: Kasumi left the team to continue her life as a thief, always holding on to Keiji's graybox.
Samara: Surprisingly, Samara stayed on with Shepard's team, stating that Shepard's mission was not over and that she will continue to stay with him to protect the galaxy they all care for.
Joker: Jeff came back to pilot the Normandy, however, he never fully recovered from EDI's destruction. There was always hope though as synthetics were being rebuilt, but Jeff wasn't convinced that one like EDI would come back to him.
EDI:…….I…am….alive….
Dr. Chakwas: The Normandy wouldn’t be the Normandy without Dr. Chakwas returning. She continued to serve on the Normandy until her retirement. It was a nice farewell. She lived on the Citadel where she occasionally works at the hospital when needed.
Samantha Traynor: Samantha came back to the Normandy where she continued her job as Comm Specialist. She and Shepard share a game night at least once a month. She’s holding the record…
Steve Cortez: Cortez’s return to the Normandy was a given, he never thought about it twice. He continued his position as pilot.

And of course, they hold more parties in Shepard’s apartment!

I just assume that we beat the Reapers somehow, probably with the fleet buying time while Shep drives her omniblade into Harbinger's electronic brain. Or maybe she talks him down somehow, shows that in assembling so vast an army, united so many people into one purpose, that the sentients of the Galaxy have matured to the point where galactic peace is possible. It may take hundreds of years but it is now feasible and thus the Reapers go into cold sleep for 50K years so they can come back to see how the experiment is going. Or they self destruct.
As for Ameiko Shepherd, she marries Liara after a few years. Ameiko remains a Spectre and, along with some of the crew (including new faces) continue to fight for peace across the galaxy. Eventually though, as Shep starts to feel the years (in the last encounter, it actually took her 2 whole minutes to kill 10 Batarian slavers ;) ), it's time to settle down and have a family. They settle on an Earth that is still rebuilding but has tons of hope and promise and start to have little blue babies which is a wondrous thing for Shep, herself an orphan who ran with gangs, now a mother, spouse, respected war hero, etc...

Still Alliance military, Shep is one of the instructors at West Point, now repurposed to prepare young officers for N7. It's a quiet desk job but one she's content with, ever surprise at just "how young" these new students are. First days are always funny as the plebs can barely speak before the legend but Shep is able to walk the line between being not quite a goddess but still comanding their respect and admirations. The admins have learned to schedule Shep's classes (Small Unit Tactics, Alliance History, and Interspecies Relationships and Diplomacy) before lunch breaks and at the end of the day since students love to hear war stories.

Liara is no longer the Shadow Broker but has amassed enough credits so the family never has to work again and instead lectures around the galaxy on the Proteans when not busy raising two adorable children. The oldest is quiet and studious like her mother. The younger one... well she's KNOW she's gonna be a bad ass Asari commando, huntress, AND the youngest Asari Spectre EVER!!!!!!! It's cute  although neither Shepherd nor Liara know just where she picked up mom's "have you ever fought an Asari Commando" line or how she delivers it so convincingly!

What can I say, I like happy endings. Shepherd saved the galaxy, did it in styles, and should be able to reap the rewards of a quiet life. Her journey is full circle, from orphan to mother and spouse, from criminal to respected war hero and pillar of the new galactic community, from a callow thug from the streets to a hero and then to a mentor of new heroes. It is the classic hero's arc, the culmination of the monomyth, and a tale that can and will inspire.

Also, little blue babies are ADORABLE!!
