"Im not some bug-eyed alien"
the first quote I'm pretty sure she said "Is it just me or do Aliens look like alike"
and the second if that was from ME1 then she was talking about the Keepers(I think?)
She states something like "whats that bug thing over there" but I may have the wrong bit

Kaiden has a better military record, and is alot more deserving of rank and spectre status. Ash is only riding the VS coat tails.

Kaiden's military record is better than Ashley's, he also has the advantage of biotics and technical training.
But Ashley's family is blacklisted the only reason her rank is so low in ME1 is because she is simply not allowed to advance. Her technical scores are very good (shepard even points it out when questioning her history) but she has been posted in back water planets and has no chance of advancement.
The only reason she rises through the ranks in ME2 and 3 is due to her being part of the crew that saved the citadel. Her family remains black listed with no appogies made for the treatement of General Williams.
Ashley is a good soldier though and deserves the rank she achieves.
I like both characters so the Virmire choice is actually quite hard for me.

So she's riding Shep's coat tails
No, she's promoted to an Officer in 6 months from gunnery chief, not only unlikely but impossible as well.

I give her the Black Widow and step out of her way.

The Jump to Lieutenant Commander from Operations Chief is unrealistic (I believe there was a mess up in ME2 she was supposed to be a higher rank instead she was promoted from gunnery to Operations Chief, ME2 takes place 2 years after ME1) but Kaidan jumps too from Lieutenant to Major in the same time span. (They both jump the same ammount of equivalent ranks- 5 ranks each by Alliance standards)
The fact is they are both experienced soldiers, both have extensive experience fighting the geth and are respected for their role in helping shepard save the citadel. I don't thinks its fair to say one deserves his/her rank over the other.
Also we don't actually know how the Alliance military operates, but I would think they would take two indivduals who helped shepard save the council and use that for their own benefit including promoting Ash to an officer's rank.
Edit: Neither are riding on Sheps coat tails, the promotions are both well deserved. But for Ash helping fight Saren allows her to rise to the rank that she should of had.
In lore she has commendations from superior officers and is known to be an excellent leader, but any recomendations for fleet service and promotions are ignored by the brass.

you mean when she talks about Shepard making nice with Liara she says something like "making nice with the bug-eyed aliens" I forgot about that. Can't really argue with that.
It is only one of perhaps three times when she says something like that, and its dissappears quite quickly as the game progresses.
She does not actually hate aliens, she even goes onto say that while she doesn’t trust aliens, she doesn’t think humanity has some kind of divine mandate to rule, nor does she think that humanity is better, when she says these things it's more out of ignorance and a general distrust, but she does change over the trilogy and Shepard can even convince her to drop the distrust in ME1.
Edit: while the comments Ashley make can be quite harsh especially when talking about bug-eyed aliens the comment was not to be taken seriously it was made in jest while she is poking fun at shepard, less than a minute later she volunteers to find out what Liara's sex life is like.
Ashley as a whole shows a high level of ignorance towards the other races that comes partly from the fact that she has never actually met one.
She views the others as a security risk on what is the alliance's most advanced vessel (though unecessary due to its joint construction). When she makes comments like bug-eyed there was no malice behind the words but rather ignorance and actually the sentements of other officers in the alliance (Admiral Mikhailovich is a good example). Over the course of the ME1 she loses the distrust and befriends the others and even comes to consider Tali as a little sister (mentioned in ME3).
2nd Edit: While looking for info on her I came across this
http://me3cosmiclove...shley-williams/
it echo's my sentiment concerning the portrayal of Ashley in the ME Trillogy.

My issue is what I've seen, the content is just lackluster. Everyone has content that fits them and is well done. Ash's content is just meh as always in ME3.
That's how I feel.
I love Ash -- easily my favorite character in ME and I used her all the time in ME3, but I feel like the writers in ME3 were never sure how to define her and because of that, a lot of her scenes fell flat.

Thanks
I think your right it is character development, maybe not in the same direction that the original writer might have taken it. But it is what it is, I still like her character so thats enough for me.
I'm not really a fan of bashing of other characters, so when the threads about Ashley pop up I have to post, I know that Ashley has flaws and to some seems xenophobic.
If a person hates her character fair enough I'm not going to convince them otherwise. But it's not really that nice to outright call her a b**ch (among other things) especially when others like her character.
I know that I like her character, I have never found her to be racist/over zealous and I loved her personality in both ME1 and 3.
For those that dislike her well...... the option exists to kill her in 3, so there you go everyone's happy. I get my happy ending with ashley and you can kill her......for defending the council from cerberus ( a known xenophobic organisation who Shep used to work for, sorry couldn't resist

Ash isn't a real spectre. It was an Udina ploy, nothing more.
By extension that means that Kaidan is not a real Spectre, On that note I'm not really sure why Ash/Kaidan became spectres (beside the obvious). Spectre's are supposed to be elite opperatives that have usually accomplished something exemplary before even being considered.
Ash/Kaidan havn't actually done anything that warrants it, yes they were part of your crew but thats not really enough they were one among many and not the driving factor behind the victory. They are experienced but is that enough?
