Ash is a polarizing character. She is well written, and has a personality. By far, my favorite character other then Shepard in the series. There are other good ones but Ashley is real to me. Strong points and flaws, they just seem to fit.

She has always wanted to prove herself to Shepard and everyone. From the moment Shepard finds her on Eden Prime, until the very last scene Shepard has with her in the extended cut. "Shepard...I can do this..." She wants to be everything to Shepard, a tough marine, a badass Spectre, a loving companion, someone to relieve Shepard's tensions. That's real. Her family's history with war and aliens has made her leery of anyone that is not a direct connection, not racist, just cautious.

I have been on these boards for a very long time and it seems to me that folks that don't care for her don't really explore the character, but that's ok. People are going to play a game and develop their own opinions the way they want and that is the good thing about story driven games. Another example is Miranda. In my opinion; another well written character. It goes deeper then just the bubble-butt and the "perfect" thing. Another character that is confused on how to be or what to be because her whole life has been doing what others expect of her or expect what she might or should be. She is just trying to find herself as cliche as that sounds.

Ash=favorite LI, favorite squadmate. Haters will hate but I fly the AW flag. :)

"Why is it whenever someone says "with all due respect", they really mean "kiss my ass"?

the first quote I'm pretty sure she said "Is it just me or do Aliens look like alike

Bioware abuse of the English language isn't that bad (e.g. "loyalty" in ME2 really means focus). Turn on the subtitles if you don't believe me.

Re religion: She brings up her dead father watching, and sounds quite serious about literally believing it. At that point, I would back away politely.

The sad thing is, after playing ME1 I've come to the conclusion that at least in that game Ashley is easily the most developed squadmate you have.  In that game the majority of your squadmates are little more than walking exposition devices: Kaiden in regards to human biotics and human-alien relations, Garrus is little more than a cowboy cop who talks about C-Sec policy, Liara is a fangirl who talks about the Asari, Tali is almost nothing beyond exposition regarding the Quarians. Wrex is the only one who comes close, but even then half his dialogue concerns the Krogan in general.

Ash on the other hand you find out about her service history, religious beliefs, views on galactic politics, and immediate and extended family and how they all mesh together in a way that makes her character believable.  Her distrust of aliens certainly isn't an admirable trait, but every character needs a flaw and while her distrust of Garrus and Wrex is unfounded she's completely correct in her assumptions in regards to the Citadel council.

Of course, we all know she ends up either dead or sidelined in ME2 and prettymuch drew the short straw when it came to content in ME3 (also didn't like her new look).  Doesn't exactly leave much room for her to grow on players...

I always have subtitles on and I'm still sure it was alike not animals(Guess I don't pay as much attention to dialgoue as I thought, you were right). The whole animals thing doesn't fit her character though (even the analogy to the throwing the dog to the bear in order to escape - the Humans where the dog and being thrown by the council to the geth and saren)

Second she is entitled to her own opinion on religion, if someone believes that their loved ones are watching them from the beyond (wasn't really sure what else to call it) then thats their prerogative and I'm not going to tell them otherwise because quite honestly I have no idea what happens after you die.

Edit: Looked it up and she does say "I can’t tell the aliens from the animals" in the Presidium and that is racist but it is just one comment and never spoken of again. Which is partially invalidated later when Shepard talks to her about the her veiws on the religion and the other races, She explicitly states theat she doesn't think that humans are superior to the other races "I don’t think humanity has some kind of divine mandate to rule, nor do I think that humanity is better".

She is not racist, she is definatly blunt and outspoken but her coments are made out of ignorance. If she constantly sprouted racist remarks that would be different but she makes perhaps three comments near the begining of the game.

By the 3rd game the ignorance she had is completly gone, she views tali as a little sister, is friends with liara, becomes a council spectre and protects the council, these are not the hallmarks of a xenophobic person.
