The wiki (not always reliable, I know) says of them:
Giant spiders tend to appear in old ruins and other places where the Veil has become thin because of magical disturbances or a great number of deaths. In such places, spirits and demons pass into the world of the living and attempt to take control over living beings, spiders among them. Not all scholars accept this explanation for the presence of these beasts, however. Some claim that the thinning Veil allows magic to "leak" from the Fade, tainting such creatures as these spiders to transform into larger and more potent creatures then they ever would become naturally. While such spiders are known to possess powerful poisons and the ability to fling their webs at opponents in combat, studies of them have been few and the full range of their abilities are unknown.
--From Codex Entry: Giant Spider
This would make them 'magical' if not 'mages', wouldn't it?
[Edited for spelling.]

I get the same thing with "Nearest Visible Mage -> Mana Clash". My mages tend to cast Mana Clash on anything and everything. The way I fixed this was to change the tactic to "Enemy -> Using attack type (magic) -> Mana Clash". Perhaps this would work for you.
Excellent suggestion! Thanks, I'll try that. Although it is a bit funny when Alistair smites spiders. Not as funny as smiting deepstalkers, but it's some pretty serious overkill.

Interesting, though, that the mechanic recognises magical creatures in that way, even if they may not be technically mages. Or, perhaps they are? Magical leaks or spirit/demon possession as a means to magic? So perhaps they have the ability to be mages, even if they don't know any spells.
Edit: Or maybe they were actually going to be mages in an earlier development stage, the idea was dropped, but the tag or whatever wasn't changed? Sorry, random speculation.

It reminds me of a BG2 mod which corrects alignments, races, classes, etc. in NPCs.
For example on a paladin quest I used detect evil to decide if I should trust a certain NPC. He came back evil, so I killed him. Turned out he was a fellow paladin after all.

Heh heh. I have a similar issue with Wynne and Stone First. That poor wolf!
Speaking of this - has anyone tried the Advanced Tactics mod? I want to install it just so I can specify FROZEN creatures for Wynn to shatter with Stonefist but I'm a little fearfull of what else it may change after getting raped by Archers after the DEX fix....

I love it. It has several extra triggers you can use. My favorite new one is the "at least 2 allies wounded (50% health)" trigger for group heal.

I have Wynne set to StoneFist frozen enemies, Leliana to Critical Arrow them and Sten to Mighty Blow them.
Overkill? Yes.
Awesome? Also yes.
Although I do end up trying to stop all of them from trying to shatter the same enemy anyway...
