Hi all - just looking for any tips to deal with the current issue I'm having regarding the difficulty of the game. I find the game on easy to be a breeze, and while it is relaxing - I don't get to use all my abilities because the mobs are dead so fast.
That being said, on Normal - I find most of the fights fine, but the boss fights to me are all but impossible. Once I've wiped and reloaded a save for the 9th or 10th time, I don't find it fun anymore, so I switch to easy and it feels like I could do it with my eyes closed.
So, just wondering if anyone else found the "Normal" setting just fine - but for boss fights had to go down to easy? I play on a PC, by the way.
Also, I know this is futile to say, but PLEASE don't tell me how you beat the game 16 times on Nightmare, without pausing, while writing the Great American Novel, and curing cancer, etc. etc. I know you're out there, and I commend you for being really good at video games. Just looking for some constructive conversation about this issue between easy/normal.

Is your game patch? The patch do reduce the difficulty in the easy and normal to make it easier. If you'd patched already then probably you need to micromanage better your party to deal with the boss as you seem manage to deal with the standard mob in the game. You could always use your tank to aggro the boss and make it chase your tank around while the other 3 hammer the boss. It's not a glorious way to win but after dying so many times you might as well use that trick to progress into the game.

Well I can assure you that its not your imagination. There's a pretty big jump in difficulty from Easy to Normal. You start hitting less often, get hit more often, get hit a fair amount harder and don't hit as hard. Its quite noticable. By contrast, the difference in difficulty going from Normal all the way to Nightmare is almost trivial. You can take a look at the modifiers here:
http://dragonage.gul....php/difficulty
Basically, on easy, you get 20% increased chance to hit, 20% less chance to be hit, your healing spells heal almost TWICE as much, you deal 7 more damage per swing, have 10% chance to avoid any spell, enemies will rarely, if ever, resist your spells, reduce damage you take by 25%, give you a buttload of potions through the game, reduce trap damage by 50% and there is no friendly fire.
Jump to normal and you lose almost ALL of those bonuses, but get to keep 5% extra chance to hit, 5% less chance to be hit...then when you skip Hard and jump all the way to Nightmare, you then suffer only 10% less chance to hit, 10% more chance to be hit, deal 5% less damage and suffer 5% more while everything else is pretty negligible.
So, Easy to Normal is like scaling a cliffside in difficulty, while going from Normal to Nightmare is taking a small hop over a mole hill once you're done.

I have read about the Easy to Normal crazy scaling, oh how I wish there were an "in between" setting. But all that being said, is there anyone else who found the boss fights unbelievably challenging? I KNOW that boss fights should be very challenging, but (I'm not finished with the game yet, so no spoilers please) I feel that at times it's just a "let's throw more bad guys at them from all different angles and overwhelm them" kind of thing - that apparently I'm just not a good enough tactician to figure out how to beat.
I don't just rush in there and although I really don't like doing it (ruins the flow of the game for me) I pause a lot and issue commands to each character, wait 2 seconds, pause again, repeat. Again, after wiping over half a dozen times - I have to switch to easy - and then it's like REALLY easy.
I also feel I shouldn't have to die several times before I "know" how to beat a boss - from the roleplaying aspect of it - I feel like if I pay attention during the fight I can figure out how to best take them down - so - really as I rant here (and I apologize) I just have issues with boss battles and feel kinda lame for moving down to easy for all the boss battles. I'll do it so I can finish the story - but maybe there will be a patch that gives us a happy medium between Easy and Normal?
Thanks again for the comments. . .

I just wish there were achievements for playing on the harder difficulties. As of now I don't really have much incentive to play on hard or nightmare or whatever it's called.

Nostradamus: for causal players in 2020 there will be a Blue-ray version of videogames, with only cutscenes and dialogues....

I follow a couple general strategies which cover all my fight encounters. First I check to see if there are any spellcasters. If so, boss or not, they get taken down as fast as possible using disabling tactics (knockdown, stun, freeze, etc.) and/or with focused fire. Then I clean up the rest of the mob. If there are no spellcasters and we're talking a boss fight, I do my best to just tank the boss, keep him occupied with my tank and never mind how much damage I'm doing him. Meanwhile with my other characters, I clean up the supporting mob while keeping an eye on my tank, so I can help with healing as needed. Once the mob is under control, I begin focus firing on the boss and take him down.
Now each encounter can take its own course with those general strategies. Some bosses are more offensive and not as hard to take down as others, so those I might just focus fire and take him down first and then the mob second. Sometimes my tank needs extra support to keep the boss occupied, so I'm then forced to split my attacks some, and can't be as efficient in taking down the mob first, and these encounters are longer and tougher. Sometimes I can crowd control a mob more easily (say they're all bunched together) and so can work on damaging the boss earlier in the encounter than I might with another mob (say one all spread out).
I think having a tank in your party and learning to use one effectively is the key to boss fights for most of us. I had not yet played a newer game with these newer-to-me ideas of "tanks, tanking, aggro" and some other ideas, so it took me awhile to figure out how to manage this game.
I played my first run thru on normal, and I did have some problems and used LOTS of healing potions. I'm midway through my second run thru, and I'm finding it much much easier. I won't be the naked 2-handed wielding guy finishing the game 16 times, solo, on nightmare, but I got much better at fights with experience--as will you.
Thanks

I agree with the OP, and what I'm doing is playing on normal and just switching to easy for particular combats. I suppose it's a bit of a cheat, but I'm easily frustrated.

I can relate. I played through on normal as a mage and especially at the start, before I really understood the game mechanics, boss battles in particular were very challenging. I was close to skipping down to easy a few times, but in the end I never actually had to. It does vary of course depending on what party makeup you have and where you put your skills, but I found even with a mage as the main character (which imo anyway is more challenging than playing as a warrior, all these threads about mages being overpowered notwithstanding) usually there is something tricky you can come up with to fluke a boss win. Sure, some luck is handy too. But I found if I was stubborn enough and kept trying different ideas, eventually something worked in each case.
(I think one problem I had first time was the "regular" battles are generally easy enough to win using the same basic ideas over and over. When I met a boss, suddenly I had to start thinking outside the box again.)
