Hi everyone,

I see a lot of complaining on theses forums about how hard the game is. So let me give you some basic tips that will help you get to the next difficulty.

This post isn't for elite players, it's really targeted to the players that have difficulty switching to a higher level. I encourage elite players to post other tips I can include in this post, your help will be much appreciated.

First, I'm gonna tell you what kind of player I was before the ME3 MP. I play on PC and ME1 was my first "shooter" ever. I used the HUD "pause" to align my shots 90% of the time, even during my 12th playthrough... Then with ME2, I was able to reduce the HUD "pause" to about 60% of the time and about 20% of the time for ME3. Let's just say that my playthroughs took more time than "normal" people...

With the ME MP, I had to adjust big time because the multiplayer doesn't allow the HUD "pause"... Let's just agree here that I sucked big time when I started the MP and that's with a keyboard and mouse.

On the other hand, you're reading about a guy that can now solo Gold, is a brand new member of the Best Of The Best club as of yesterday, can easily hold his own on Platinum and is in the top 15 for Challenge points (PC - Canada).

So how is it possible a guy so bad as me can achieve all that? Well that's what my post is all about: How to go from a Bronze player to a regular Platinum one. So check the following posts to learn how I did it.

Let's be honest, you won't have a great manifest here. It's all good, don't worry the difficulty isn't great either. Here are some tips that will make the game easier for you:
  • Every basic human character is good enough for a beginner (they're good enough for Platinum so...)
  • Play every class enough to get to level 20 for each one
  • You have 2 basic human character per class, try different builds for each one
  • Play at least 10 matches with each character level 20 to get used to their powers (2 builds x 6 classes x 10 matches = 120 matches minimum)
  • When using a Vanguard, host the game (it makes all the difference in the world)
  • Try to max your Fitness tree so you are more resilient to enemies
  • Take "hard" cover (It means press the cover button and use the cover)
  • Concentrate on Recruit packs in the store
  • Switch to Veteran packs only when you have all the common weapons, mods and character maxed
Use this site to help you build your character. You'll use this countless of times, bookmark the link.

Other than that, there's no reason to stay on Bronze anymore, time to get to Silver.

[Silver]
Ok, now you should have at least a basic grasp of the game and how the enemies react. Silver is like the first challenge you get after a tutorial. That's where you actually learn the most important things and get familiar to the real game. Here's some tips:
  • Take the character you're most comfortable with for your first matches and be sure to be level 20
  • Character that relies on their powers will always use their maximum potential no matter the difficulty, so Adepts and Engineers are great to experiment with
  • Minimize the amount of angles from which you can take fire = Try to stay inside buildings (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!)
  • Never engage an enemy and leave it alive so it can flank your teammates
  • Never charge into a group if you're not sure you'll be the one standing at the end (This is the most difficult part to master in this game)
  • Try to stick to the team, don't be a Rambo (you're not there yet). If they wander off in the open and things gets messy, suggest them to get inside as soon as possible
  • Try to move around the map with your team. Staying at one place too long will only end with you being overrun
  • Familiarize yourself with combos. Here's a list of how to prime and detonate them
  • Level 1 consumables are "useless" on Gold, use them because you won't know what to do with them later. It also helps a lot adjust to the new difficulty
  • Pair ammo with your powers or your strategy. Disruptor ammo are great at "stunning" the enemy while Cryo Ammo will "freeze" enemies with only health remaining. Warp ammo should only be used when you have a biotic primer or someone else on your team has one. Inciendiary ammo are the best ammo in the game because they deal extra damage to armor
  • Use "soft" cover from time to time. "Soft" cover means you don't press the cover button, you use the crates, wall corners and other obstacles so you don't get shot. Every single character in this game is right handed, so position yourself in a way where only the shooting arm is not under cover. Most enemy will be helpless as long as they don't see your body
  • When hit by a DOT attack (Damage Over Time) like the Banshee's Warp ball of doom, use "hard" cover since it gives you damage reduction, meaning you'll receive less damage
  • Although I'm not 100% sure about this, I think the time before your shield begin to restore is reduced when you're in "hard" cover, meaning you can venture into the world faster than if you just wait in place for the shield to begin to restore itself
  • Situational awareness is the key. When you see all your teammates firing in the same direction as you do, look behind yourself, there's probably a Phantom sharpening her sword just for you. And if you find yourself firing more than 10 seconds in the same direction, look behind yourself or your flanks because there's a Pretorian somewhere that want to test its maws
  • When you're holding your own, try to use less points in Fitness. Your goal is to only put 6 points in it, meaning the first 3 options. Read this to know why
  • Always try to clear the enemies around a fallen teammate before trying to revive him. If you try to revive him before, you have the chance of joining him and both of you will need to use medigels
  • Never try to revive a fallen teammate when a boss with synk-kill is right on top of them. Try to lure the boss your way instead so another teammate can revive the fallen one or that he can use a medigel "safely"
  • Enemies will spawn infinitely on objective waves until you finish the objective, so do the objective as soon as possible. You sure don't want to fight 32 Banshees in a row do you?
  • Don't rush to the shuttle on wave 11 before the countdown is at most 30 seconds, otherwise you'll get overrun and will lower your chance of extraction. Rio is special, you can go at 40 seconds
  • Never enter a Silver match with less than 3 medigels and 2 missiles
  • Concentrate on Veteran packs in the store
  • You can buy Specter and Premium Specter packs from time to time, but don't over do it because you're only gonna waste your money. The store will give you some Uncommons in those packs as long as they're not maxed so you will pay those much more than you would have if you maxed the Uncommons first
  • Play at least 10 matches with all your characters (No need to do 20 matches with the basic humans anymore)
  • When unlocking a new character, try it first on Bronze to get the hang of it
That's about it for Silver. If you can do that without too much trouble, you're ready for Gold. If you have played more than 200 hours, it's definitely the time you step up...

[Gold]
This is where you become a great player. You already have the basics, you only need to make them your second nature. Gold is only a faster version of Silver, you don't really need more skills, just faster skills...
  • As with Silver, play your first few matches with a level 20 character you're comfortable with
  • If you have difficulties with your Gold matches, use a class that allows more "leeway" like a Krogan or a Vorcha with Bloodlust. Using full Fitness with Cyclonic Armor consumables (3 or less, keep level 4 for later) and Stronghold gear will also be beneficial (don't do that with Vorcha, since they regenerate health). When you're more comfortable, you can relax the consumables, gear and fitness to get back to what you used on Silver
  • If you're willing to learn, there are a lot of players willing to teach. There's a group that will adopt a rookie and show them the ropes. You can also consult this thread
  • It's even more important than in Silver to minimize the angles you can be shot from. Walls, corners and stairs are your best friends
  • Get a microphone. It's 30$ and it will be a life saver more times that you can count
  • Use your microphone in game. Alert people of a coming treat so they won't be taken by surprise. Tell people when you're on your way to resurrect them. Tell people when you will use a medigel yourself so they don't lose their time trying to get to you
  • Use your microphone in the lobby. If you're friendly, most people won't kick you from a lobby if you have a "minimum" loadout. Don't be afraid to ask questions and check what the other guys are using, maybe you can learn a trick or two
  • Find people you're comfortable playing with and build a friend list. You don't need to always play with 3 friends, but having at least one with you will make the game much easier because you know how they'll react and what they can do when **** hits the fan
  • Use "soft" cover something like 99% of the time
  • When 4 people are in a doorway using "soft" cover, align yourself so you're not in the way of another player when he wants to move sideways. That way, you can all move freely and nobody will get killed because someone's blocking the way
  • Unless a power does a **** load of damage, power damage options are less than desirable. So having the basic human Adept use power damage is a waste of time because you'll do much of your damage with explosions and guns. 20 more damage per 2.46 seconds from Warp means nothing, might as well save your power damage consumables for something usefull like grenades
  • When you lose your shield, immediately stop attacking and find cover. You're of no use dead, when you're waiting for someone to revive you, you're not dealing damage and the one reviving you isn't either. That's twice as bad since 2 players are momentarily "out"
  • Don't rage gel, let people revive you when possible. You're of no use if you don't have any gel on wave 10 and you bleed out
  • If you're about to get stomped, use a medigel unless it's wave 1 or 2
  • Never bleed out on objective waves. NEVER!!!!!!!
  • Missiles are there for the "oh ****!" moments. It's not there to nuke spawn points (you're not there yet) or getting better score (you really don't need that... ever)
  • When you see a teammate in a situation where there's a possibility he can be sync-killed, immediately try to get a missile out so you can interrupt it. Don't try it if you're not "safe" yourself
  • When you see a teammate in a sync-kill motion by a Banshee or a Pretorian, you can focus fire and if you deal enough damage you will interrupt the sync-kill. Dropping the shield (full or just 1 bar left) almost always stop the sync-kill sequence
  • Tell others you're gonna launch a missile, nothing more frustrating than using a missile half a second after your teammate...
  • Enemies will spawn infinitely on objective waves until you finish the objectives, so unless there is a group of enemies physically blocking an objective, it's best to save your missiles for emergencies. i.e. A banshee closing on a teammate doing a disable objective
  • Bosses don't respawn unless you kill them. For easier matches, it's better to concentrate to kill non-boss enemies (mooks)  first and then go for bosses. That way, instead of facing 6 small enemies and 10 Banshees in a wave, you'll get 20 small enemies and 2 Banshees. It allows you more survivability by reducing the chances you have to be sync-killed
  • Check this thread about "speed runs". You don't need to learn how to "speed run", but knowing where enemies spawn will be a great help to avoid being flanked and to force them in a specific path. For example, in Firebase White, you position 1 teammate at the top of the map and 3 in the building. Doing so, the first spawn will almost be at the bottom of the stairs where you have cover to deal with them easily.
  • Divide and conquer. The game is easier when you work in pairs. You usually cannot hold a position alone and when you're all together so are the enemies. Working in teams of 2, both "teams" can hold one side of a position and no enemy will be able to flank you or come in your back. This also divide the enemies in 2 groups making them easier to kill and less threatening, in turn making you harder to kill
  • Focus your fire on the same boss. Have you ever seen a Platinum Banshee go down in less than 5 seconds? It's possible even with average loadout, you just need to be all four focusing on the same target. Eliminating a threat in a timely manner will give you more survivability
  • Learn when to do a "tactial retreat", meaning run for your life BEFORE getting overwhelmed
  • Flamer deals a part of it's damage as DOT (Damage Over Time) after you stop using it, so stop before the enemy dies otherwise you lose the DOT damage. It's also much faster to stop before the enemy dies and move to the next target
  • By now, you have enough consumables to always them. It's also shows some "etiquette" that you're there for business, not to be carried
  • Use a freaking GEAR, it's free for **** sake!
  • Never enter a Gold match with less than 5 medigels/missiles/ammunition/OPS
  • Thermal Clip packs not only restore your ammunition, but also your grenades. They also give you a small damage boost so don't hesitate to use them when you run out of ammo
  • Max all your commons and uncommons before going for Premium Specter packs
  • Don't bother with Specter packs, go directly to Premium ones
  • If you want to maximize your return on investment with the store, max your medigels, missiles, ammunition and OPS pack to 255 as soon as possible. When it's done, save your credits and when you drop below 100, max again those base consumables before spending all the rest in PSP packs. This will be a pain the first time you max the base consumables, but you'll never run out of valuable consumables after that, ever... (I currently spend about 1M credit a week on base consumables... ouch!)
  • When unlocking a new character, try it on Silver first
As you can see, there's not much more to learn once you know how to Silver properly. Gold is about the small details. What makes Gold hard is people are trying it without mastering those concepts. They're not hard to execute, you just have to learn them.

[Platinum]
This is where you "farm" credits and get some great challenge. Technically, Platinum is just Gold with more bosses. By now, you should have mastered the basics and the more "complex" concepts. There's really not much to add to the previous points, it's just a matter of playing:
  • By now you should have a good idea of how to build your characters, but check the threads in these forums for some build. Here's one of these thread
  • If you meet a really good player, don't be afraid to ask them tips on how they play a particular kit. Most of them will help you if you ask nicely and show you're willing to learn
  • Prepare yourself for Platinum by losing the fitness all together on Gold. The better you are relying on low health and shield, the better you'll perform on Platinum. Unless you're extremely skilled at surviving, don't try to run with no fitness on Platinum
  • Choose your weapons carefully, about every UR (maxed or not) will do the job and many maxed rares are also great, if not amongst the best of the game
  • Learn to "speed run" if that's your thing. It's easier to get credits for maxing your manifest and missiles make the matches much easier... Eventually you're probably gonna get bored of it, but by that time you'll have enough experience on Platinum to branch out
  • Learn to reload cancel
  • If you're having a really hard time adjusting Platinum, Rio's box of shame can ease up the learning curve (search the forums for the specifics). If you followed all my tips until now, you shouldn't need this tactic, but there's nothing "wrong" with it. If you resort to the box of shame, try to venture outside of the it as much as you can. The more you venture outside, the faster you'll be able to own your own on any map, you will earn credits faster and it's gonna be incredibly more fun...
Honestly, after playing Platinum for a while, you will easily beat Gold with 3 PUGs. The same PUGs you were once a part of. Silver will feel "empty" like a ghost town. That's when you'll realize you've become one of the great player at this game.

[Conclusion]
As you can see, there's no magic in here, it's just a matter of knowledge. If I can base myself on my own experience, anybody with average skills can achieve what I did. So there you have it, I wish you luck in your quest to higher difficulties.

Some other tips for Gold:

Enemies will spawn infinitely on objective waves until you finish the objectives, so unless there is a group of enemies physically blocking an objective, its best to save the missiles for after or for emergencies. i.e. A banshee closing on a teammate doing a disable objective.

Hard Cover gives you passive damage reduction that you can use to blunt the impact of some DoTs and all attacks if you need.

Thermal Clip packs restore grenades as well as give you a small damage boost. Since they are quite plentiful, you shouldn't hesitate to use them if you are out of ammo.

Also it's not the people on the forums that nesscarily need help with the game, it's more of all of the people that don't use this well of knowledge and those are more than half of the players that play Mass Effect 3 mp.  Not saying there aren't good players who don't use the forums but the forums can put you a step ahead

Great post, thank you for posting your experience.

However I used the "Map Mastery" challenge to pinpoint the moments I would abandon a difficulty. Some point midway the challenge I decided to also taste the higher difficulty, with a level 20 build, but the main focus stays on the current challenge difficulty.

I like the "lose the fitness points" and invest them in powers. I never thought of that, that is actually great advise. But only if you use a non-melee character, on a Krogan that would be bad advise. But for the Salarian who is capable of stealing shields with energy drain and get 40% damage reduction, it could prove very profitable. Meaning you also have Incinerate maxed out.... You solved my riddle.

Well, damn. Maybe I should play some more silver games sans gear so I can stock up on more consumables for when I go back to Gold (and practice not dying more so I don't run out of medigel either). I had a very staggered approach from when I first started playing up until a month or two ago, and I'm rather lacking in the consumables department. I haven't even maxed all of my uncommons yet.

Don't worry so much about consumables, when your uncommons will be maxed, you will see them rise very very fast.

Honestly, before going all out for Specter and Premium Specter pack, I would be sure to max my medigels, missiles, ammunition and ops pack with Jumbo Equipement packs. I know it's a pain, but there are good reasons to do so.

First, having 255 of each will net always net you level 3 consumables in SP and PSP. You'll need those, no need to replace them with Medigels for example.

Second reason is that a Jumbo Equipement Pack cost 33K, but you get 5 medigels, 5 missiles, 5 ammunition, 5 OPS and 6 level 1 to 3 consumable. So technically, you get 20 base consumables for 33K which is about 1.65K per base consumables if you count the 6 random consumables as "free".

If you go with Specter packs, you get 20 base consumables for 60K (remove about 25K per rare card) which is about 1.75K per base consumables, but you don't have any free random consumables level 3 because Medigels and other base consumables took their place in the packs.

If you go with Premium Specter pack, you get 15 base consumables for 99K (remove about 25K per rare card) which is about 2.45K per base consumables, but you don't have any free random consumables level 3 either.

The way I see it, you're gonna buy hundreds of packs anyway, might as well bite the bullet early and optimise your drops to get the most out of it. The other way will work too, but you're gonna have to play way much more for no real benefit except entertainement.

Some additional tips for Silver and above:

Speed/Mobility are often more important to survival than raw health. Moving quickly at an angle to incoming fire will virtually guarantee you won't be hit. This is how Drell live.

That said, many new players do very well with tanks on Gold. Full Fitness plus full DR from Armor plus any Shield boosting Gear plus any level of Cyclonic Modulator will let many a Krogan or Batarian move at will across a map, and sync kills will be the only real danger.

Situational awareness will save your life. If you have the Geth Scanner, use it when you first move to Gold. Knowing where enemies are will keep you alive.

Nicely done. Let's run later, sorry I missed you last night had some RL stuff....

I am pretty sure you are correct when you mention that you think shields restore more quickly in "hard cover". I use this to survive Warp Balls and DoT attacks alot, and on the Shadow especially you will notice her shields often refuse to restore unless she has her back up against a wall, uncloaked of course.

Again, well done, good tips, very accessible :)

Skill level doesn't increase unless you actually try to increase it. No amount of tips will help you. Learn to aim better with the mouse and using key combinations(Power Combos) quicker.

Wow James, brilliant post.

Understanding how the game works can increase your knowledge. Knowledge can be beneficial to your character's placement and loadout. It can provide a context in which skill can be gained, by putting yourself in a better position to succeed thanks to the knowledge you have gained from reading a thread like this.

"Learn to aim better" is not learning at all. It is practice. A skill that must be developed.

Using quicker key combinations? We are not playing Mario here trying to duck into secret pipes.... What game are you playing exactly?

Bummer, I was looking forward to a few more Platinum tips.

Everyone says its not much harder then Gold, and they're sort of right, but everything on Platinum takes so much damage that barely any classes work for me. At least, barely any work for me compared to Gold where I have no problem with any class on U/U.

Do people pick U/U/P and run, say SE decoy build or other vanilla classes, and consistently do well in PuG's?

EDIT: I just I'm a classical ME3 guy, I dont like the new cutting edge powers as much as the ME staples.
