For me it is ME3 even I'm still confused about the endings, but with EC it got better and I accepted it.
It was a very emotional ride. The triology was in all incredible.

i dont really combare the games but in quality me3 is the best but i think me 1 was the most intresting. but the citadel and LOTSB dlc's are the best parts of the story hands down the rest of the story is great and the me3 ending ive acsepted, in my oppinion shepard lives on after the destroy ending and hapily ever after. but that MEHEM mod sounds intresting

Story: ME1 > ME3 > ME2. The overall story in ME1 has been done time and again (monsters from space), so it's not awe-inspiring or anything, but it is entertaining. I didn't buy the whole "characters are the story" thing for ME2 nor did I like the departure from focusing on a Reaper and/or geth threat to focusing on the Collectors. The death and resurrection of Shepard was a hard pill to swallow as well.

Gamplay: ME3 > ME2 > ME1. Easy enough. At least in terms of combat. In terms of roleplaying, ME1 > ME2 > ME3.

Characters: ME3 > ME1 > ME2. The Garrus/Femshep romance won me over in ME3. I also really enjoyed James, Javik, and Traynor. And having the VS back was nice. Aside from the hot mess of tropes that was Liara and the Encyclopedia of All Things Quarian that was Tali, the characters were pretty interesting in ME1. ME2 suffered from too many characters with too little time to spend with each of them, so while they were likeable, they mostly seemed.. kind of shallow and cliche. Kasumi was the only squadmate introduced in ME2 who I really hoped to interact with in ME3.

Overall (including all DLC): ME3 > ME1 > ME2. In spite of the rampant and highly annoying autodialogue in ME3.

In terms of gameplay: ME3 > ME2 > ME1 (though ME1's gameplay wasn't too bad)

In terms of story: ME1 > ME3 > ME2 (though ME2 served as a segue into the next chapter)

In terms of character focus: ME1 > ME2 > ME3 (though ME3 still had some memorable characters, like Eve, Leviathan, and [yes] the Catalyst)

Overall? I think ME1 beats them both because of the atmosphere: you're entering the universe of Mass Effect, and what tug me to the universe can all be found in ME1: the wonder of exploring the uncharted worlds and vast reaches of space, and the mysteries surrounding this galaxy of secrets... not to mention that the writing had Drew Karpyshyn's hand in it, and it took itself more seriously than the other two titles.

I stupidly played ME2 first, but ME1 holds a much dearer place in my heart.

It just can't be beaten (apart from combat, maybe? BioWare remove everything from space).

ME3, despite the flubbed ending. With the EC DLC it's not so bad, but still, nothing great. Everything prior to the end is all good fun.

Combat: ME3 > ME2 > ME1
Story: ME1 > ME2> ME3 (ME3 had some great story parts--like curing the genophage--but priority:earth and the ending just completely ruin it for me)
Character focus: ME1 > ME2 > ME3 (though in terms of LI contact, ME3 takes the cake)
Ending: ME2>ME1>ME3 (I really don't even want to put ME3 in here...that wasn't an ending so much as it was a complete clusterf***)

Overall, I think ME1 is the best game in terms of storytelling, character focus, and overall intrigue and replayability. I *really* enjoyed ME2 and have played that game the most. I don't consider myself an ME2 "fanboi" in terms of really liking the ME2 characters, I just think the tone and pace of the game was perfect. And I really enjoyed that each mission carried a character focus. Oh and there's the suicide mission--I'll never forget how my adrenaline was pumping the first time I played through that. Absolutely loved it, and think it's the best ending to any ME game.

Mass Effect 3's combat is the most thrilling of the three, but I think I still prefer ME2 by the slightest of margins. I loved Shepard working with Cerberus, the story missions involving the Collectors, and having to put together a team. The final mission is also my favorite thing in any game ever. ME1 is also great in its own way. I enjoy all three for different reasons.

I enjoyed ME3's combat the most but pretty much everything else falls to ME2.

ME3 all the way, when doing a complete run thru I want to rush to ME3! But then I get sucked into the others so much... On their own merits all 3 games are truly magnificent!!!

It's odd, really. In terms of storyline, I give it to ME1, despite the entire "Race Against Time" storyline being relatively short. The story flowed well, there was the moment of heartache on Virmire, the feeling of accomplishment on Feros and after the Battle for the Citadel and the overall feeling of being part of this huge galaxy.

In terms of control/combat system/gameplay I give it to ME3. There's a handful of quality of life changes which I find extremely useful, such as not being able to aim with the sniper rifle if it hasn't got a round in it (too many times in ME2 I've lined up the perfect shot only to have Shepard reload). Also simple things such as being able to combat roll, rush between cover etc. are vastly superior to the system in ME2 - despite everything being bound to the magical space bar of wonder.

But that said, I prefer ME2. It had the weakest overall storyline and a "not quite there" control system but it had the characters - a much wider selection of characters that give it much more replay value because of the different conversations that can take place during missions. I'll give ME3 props for the autodialogue system meaning you're not brushed off with whiney remarks about "forced conversations" and the like when you exhaust convo-wheel options but overall the depth of characters wins for me... that and the Suicide Mission being all kinds of awesome as well as most of the other missions. Also it had the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC which remains my favourite.

ME3 for sure. A strong campaign, improved gameplay, and a robust multiplayer suite that just kept growing lift it above the classic ME2 in my opinion.

ME1 is still my favorite for numerous reasons including but not limited to favorite characters, favorite story, favorite missions, favorite antagonists, mako....

Now that all of the DLC is out I have to change from ME1 > ME2 = ME3 to ME1 > ME3 > ME2

--------------Gameplay and Storywise, ME1--------
Close second on Story is ME2, reiterates fellowship and diversity to accomplish good.
ME3 was still good but has little to do with the original story of dark energy.

Mass effect 2. One of the best games I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Not to take anything away from me3 or me1, love those games too!
