I think when comparing you need to take the graphics out of it, all of the ME games have looked good for the time frame they were released it. So we are left with gameplay, character and story.
I played the gamed in correct order and on the PC.

ME1:
had great characters and great story with a useable but sometimes annoying gameplay/interface.  I can forgive annoying gameplay if it isn't totally unplayable. (ie Dark Souls PC port)

ME2:
wish I could meet all these great characters everyone else had in their ME2 games because all the new ones (ie not the old SR1 crew) were just uninteresting to me.  TIM as a pseudo villian was ok, Legion was a nice add, but the new crew members? It was hard on my paragon not to suicide the lot.   The gameplay was an improvement though.

ME3:
the ending was dealt with in the EC to a good enough level that I can't hold it against the rest of the game now. The characters were a good mix of old and new, great to see the SR1 crew again,  the story was good and the gameplay was on par with 2.

So for me it is ME1/ME3 ........... ME2

ME3 for the combat mechanics and cinematography, ME2 for the character stories and moral ambiguity, and ME1 for the core plot and original cast.

I'm getting toward two-third's through my latest Trilogy playthrough, and it's remarkable how each instalment shines in it's own way. Just a shame the engine in ME1 feels so dated now. Everything's so soupy and detached, even at a solid 60fps. Server frame settings, at a guess. Tick rate in the older Unreal Engine games always was appalling - more invasive than the lower res textures, imo.

Love the Trilogy for it's diversity tho. Very definitely a solid all round package now, mining in 2 and mako in 1 be damned :P ^^

I can't pick one. I love them all equally. But ME1 has the Mako. I <3 driving the Mako around & exploring alien planets. And I can't believe they removed it from 2 & 3.

1. ME1. Great atmosphere of sci-fi epic on a scale of Babylon-5. Good and logical plot with a charismatic villain who had a sensible motive! Teammates were nice, not that excellent like in ME2 but still. Exploration, sense of a vast universe, Mako. Main missions are the best in the series. But horrendous sidemissions(basically one base that you meet million times). Easily finest game in the series.

2. ME2. Great teammates. Enough said. Combat is better than in the first. But Bioware dumbed down RPG elements. Suicide mission is the best in the series.

ME3. Ending. Enough said. And no, extended cut didn't and couldn't fix main flaws. Terrible plot. It's sad when multiplayer is the best part of Mass Effect game.
Only Krogan and Geth-Quarian arc conclusions are a bright spot. Especially Tuchanka, it's a masterpice of gamemaking. Garrus and Mordin were great.

Way too hard to call for me.

ME3 was a mess, but that moment on Rannoch after destroying the reaper... A lot of moments I couldn't forget.

But ME2 had some really great parts, and the suicide mission was great.

ME1 was so deep...

I just love the whole experience.

Out of the box: Mass Effect 1. It has the best story, the best atmosphere, the best music, and the most intriguing hub worlds and a very solid cast of secondary characters in those hubs.

Mass Effect 2, however, is the better full package. Overlord and Lair of the Shadow Broker make it the most robust game of the series. The addition of the Normandy Crash Site offers a nice moment and the Firewalker Pack adds a series of somewhat interesting sidequests (at least in terms of mixing up gameplay). Arrival also made for a decent bridge into the next game--though it was unfortunately underdeveloped in ME3's opening. I'd argue that the world of Mass Effect 2 is darker and perhaps more enthralling (you don't find yourself backtracking as much). It certainly has the best sidequests of the games due to the detail put into loyalty missions, recruiting squad mates, and the Alliance/other faction quests. The characters and the sheer size of the cast is awesome. The tie-ins with Mass Effect 1 are also very strong. The gameplay is improved, though customization was reduced and ammo was way too scarce.

Mass Effect 3 certainly had the best gameplay of the bunch and had some truly standout missions (Tuchanka, the Citadel Coup, Rannoch/Geth Collective) but was bare in just about every other way. I've yet to play the DLC, so I can't comment on it yet. The dialogue was stripped down, the characters had some good scenes but lacked fuller content, and the plot was contrived. I'd say it fits the Return of the Jedi mould pretty well (minus the happy ending). Also, the game tied-in with the others rather poorly. Besides cameos by the squadmates, almost all secondary characters were reduced to brief mention, an email, or were neglected completely (or killed off on twitter).

tl;dr Mass Effect 1 is the best game out of the box, ME2 is the best game taken as a whole package (DLC included), and I find myself constantly switching between the two as the best. In the end, I'd say I prefer Mass Effect 1 on a bunch of different levels to Mass Effect 2, but would rather replay 2 than 1 if I were to pick up a controller right now. Confusing, huh?

ME1. It's self-contained, self-consistent and it adheres rigidly to the goals that it set out to do (i.e. create an interactive love-letter to 1980s sci-fi). It also has the distinction of being the most non-linear game in the franchise, as it has non-linearity both in its core plot (the order you do the planets in affects more than just Liara's sanity or Shepard's interpretation of the Cipher) and the character plots (too bad ME2 and ME3 totally abandon what you could have manipulated Garrus into believing, huh?). All of its gameplay flaws can be forgiven for the quality of the worldbuilding and storytelling. AND THE SENSE OF WONDER the other two games utterly lack.

The problem with ME2 is that it HAS NO REAL PLOT. If you strip out all the side-stories concerned with playing Gotta Catch'Em All with your squaddies (most of which were so well-written, it effectively masks the central plot's failings), the plot consists of you following suspiciously-spaced breadcrumbs, lots of cutscene incompetence and taking a frigate to do a fleet's job. It has you going "owait, why do I need all those people again? oh, right, something something Omega relay" quite a few times.

The problem with ME3 is that it is a giant exercise in stupidity. The entire Crucible plotline that weaves to and from the foreground, depends heavily on Shepard and Co abandoning common sense and putting all of their eggs into a vaguely-basket shaped doodad that for all intents and purposes can turn out to be a fancy alien landmine (and, due to how absurdly vague the final act of the game is about its functions even with the EC, it can be considered one), and relies on a bajillion retcons to justify the Crucible
A) appearing out of nowhere under suspicious circumstances
B) being the only thing that theoretically can defeat the Reapers
C) being accepted as the Main Plan of Galactic Salvation despite being the proverbial Aperture Science We-Don't-Know-What-It-Does Device.

Let's do it this way:

"Story"
"Character"
"Gameplay"

ME1:
Story - #1
Characters - #1
Gameplay - #3

WOT.

Anyway, Mass Effect 3 is the most enjoyable. Mass Effect 2 has some pretty awesome missions and Mass Effect 1 has that awesome Luna mission.

ME1 is a best game in the dilogy. ME2 is second, because of loss of sci-fi atmosphere and nonsensical main story.
And ME3 is standalone nonsensical retarded clowns show.

ME2>ME3>ME1 for me.

Mass Effect 1: very good story, a bit too linear though and the side missions were so. god. damn. annoying. Seriously. I hate the Mako, I hate planet exploring, I hate Thresher Maws (especially their randomness at 1shottin you if they happened to spawn right below you) and I hate "BW-loves-reusing-my-looks" location (Dragon Age 2 style lol). Seriously. It was fun for like first 3 planets, then it got really annoying, but I did it all cause I'm a perfectionist. Played ME1 like hmm.. 4 times (only cause I lost some playthroughs due to my PC getting a virus that required factory image reset :( ).

Mass Effect 2: I don't get why people are complaining that the story was bad. I didn't really get why Shepard had to die in the very beginning, but after thinking it through (aside from the fact that the Collectors obviously were after Shepard and the SR1 wasn't prepared for their attack, which mind you makes sense) I have to say there's no other way Shepard would help the Illusive Man other than being pretty much forced to in a very persuasive way. Only TIM can pull that off, don't try it at home. ;)
It was also not as predictable as the first game too (I like being surprised, what is pretty hard). Characters were great and the Suicide Mission was the most brilliant mission of the whole series. Everything you've done mattered and was reflected in it. As it should be. Also it had many touchy moments where I had tears in my eyes (in ME1 it was only one, in the end when your squad members and Anderson for a moment there thought that Shepard was dead).
The only annoying thing was the planet scanning, but not nearly as annoying as ME1's planet exploring. Played the game 2 times. I'd love to play more, but when I', thinking of replaying ME1 again (and I hate the Genesis DLC, it doesn't even metion the Thorian lol)... eh need a longer break and some recharging of my patience batteries. ;)

Mass Effect 3: Honestly, it would be my favorite... but that ending, damn, if it was at least as half as good as ME2's also the character development wasn't as good either (the Citadel DLC redeemed it, but still, it's 1 year after the release, it should've been in the game to begin with). But it still had more touching moments than ME1... Namely: Mordin's death, Legion's sacrifice. Now also the Shepard clone's death makes me somewhat sad too. I finished the game 2 times too.

So yeah... Also my bf saw me playing ME2 and ME3 and he really wanted to play them too, but I told him to start with ME1 cause it's the best introduction into the series. He did several attempts, all failed cause he finds the combat too annoying. I'll see to it that he finishes the game eventually. ;)

All three games have great parts to them, and all three games have annoying parts to them.

Mass Effect 1 had the best player control over Shepard's personality, which is important, since Shepard then became my Shepard. It also had the most cohesive (though flawed in some parts) story of the trilogy, since it's the introduction of the universe, the Reapers, etc. The gameplay was meh, the Mako was awesome but the terrain we had to drive it in was horrible, the gunplay was lackluster but decent...the Adept was the shining star here, being the KING of crowd control by mid-late game.

Mass Effect 2 had tighter gameplay, at reduced character customization, but the plot suffered. The individual character stories were awesome, for the most part. There was somewhat of an overabundance of "daddy issues," but I could deal with that. The largest problems I have with ME2 is the forced cooperation with Cerberus, and the fact that by the end of the game we had made no progress in finding any way to combat the Reapers. But it was a fun game, and LotSB was awesome. Arrival was fun, and made for an interesting lead-in to ME3.

ME3 had the tightest gameplay, though I would argue that the weight mechanic wasn't the best idea ever, and Biotic Explosions made biotics overpowered to a large degree. There was good interaction between squad members on the Normandy, conversations that Shepard wasn't a part of, and the atmostphere of the game was outstanding. There were some truly epic moments in the game, the genophage arc being the absolute highlight of my gaming career. Rannoch nearly matched Tuchanka, with the triumph of taking out that Reaper. Then the game takes a downward turn. Thessia was ok, but nothing special, and Kai Leng was...well, not my favorite adversary, to put it mildly. A bit of an upswing with Sanctuary, it was creepy and was probably the best fight against Reaper forces in the game, as far as I'm concerned. Then the disappointment that was the Cerberus base and the wasted potential of Priority:Earth, and then...the endings.

I would have to put ME3 just ahead of ME1, with the much improved gameplay, and the truly epic moments. Add in the Citadel DLC, and ME3 gets the lock as my favorite. ME1 is strongly in second place, with the story and characters. ME2 is a bit of a distant 3rd. I enjoyed the game, I played it through several times, but the main plot was just too disjointed for me to put it any higher.

Just my opinion, no need to go spreading it around....

I would say #3 accept for the fact that the last 10 minutes destroys everything.
after that I would say #2 but Kaidan is only in it for like 2 seconds

So it has to be #1!

With all the flaws it have, still ME2, then ME1. ME3 feels more like a spoof than a conclusion.

Based on first playthrough I'd say

ME1 > ME3 > ME2

ME1's story just blew my mind away. I still remember pacing around the living room trying to decide the fate of the Rachni, Ashley/Kaidan and the Council. Sovereign's expose was one of the most chilling experiences in any story I've encountered.
ME2 just bombed when I came face to face with "a human reaper". Yawn. The whole mission seemed pointless.
ME3 was great up until the ending. (Who hasn't heard that line spoken a million times?)

On replay
ME3 > ME2 > ME1
The gameplay mechanics just improved so much that I can't snipe without time dilation anymore.
Can't vanguard without a follow up Nova... etc.
But I guess the same thing can be said of any Aged Game. I try to play my all time favorite games again (Baldur's gate II, Torment, TIE fighter, KOTOR 2 etc... ) but games age eventually, and you can't really go back.

After just replaying it all it's 2. Easily.
I don't understand anyone who thinks ME1 is the best.
The gameplay is a mess, the inventory and upgrade path is largely useless and doesn't feel like it makes any gameplay difference.
The MAKO...exists.
All the characters feel dull an humorless, they're really just stand-ins for their race and explaining the universe and don't have much character at all.

I mean don't get me wrong, they manages to present a totally unique vision and universe in that first game but in terms of which one I'd rather play, it's 2.

In terms of gameplay, ME3. (Mostly. I mean the part where you run around shooting at things and activating weird powers.)

Inventory system...ME1. Upgrades are very flexible and there are a lot of weapons, armors and upgrades to choose from. ME3's is second best. Armor customization is a good addition in both 2 and 3, and the flexibility in using different weapons and mods to those weapons is great in 3. The very finite amount of credits and resources in the later games is a real weakness. I like to be able to work my way up to serious firepower.

Story...ME1. Neither of the later games actually made sense plot-wise, although 2 and 3 both made enjoyable additions character-wise. In particular, Shepard's cooperation with the made-to-be-evil Cerberus and the idea that the Reapers had arrived en masse and we were going to fight them off with infantry were just bad. Although I will say, the "suicide mission" in 2 was a great fit for the kind of group Shepard leads. They're elite, but there just plain aren't that many of them, and anywhere you could send infantry in, there'd just be no use for them.

On which subject, foot soldiers holding off Reapers? Pft. Okay, they destroy things piecemeal, but they have no real vulnerabilities, we already saw one weather assaults by a fleet of the most advanced warships in the galaxy. I'll accept it in the one instance of Shepard calling down an orbital laser, but for there to be a "resistance" against an occupying force, it kind of needs weaknesses for them to exploit.

I prefer a mess with tons of potential to a utterly boring Gears wannabe.

I'm still waiting for a good shooter RPG with a refined version of the ME dicerolls-shooting mechanics, the first studio picking that idea and working on it gets all my money (taking a look at Memelands 2 for inspiration could be a good start).

Different tastes I guess, but I want to play a RPG so I go ME/ME3 (to a much lesser degree). If I wanted to play a third person shooter I'd rather pick something that is not terrible, like Vanquish or Gears itself.

Mass Effect 2 by a country mile. Better squad, better interactions, spectacular final mission.

Mass Effect has a good story and rubbish combat. Mass Effect 3 has the best combat of the series but many faults in the story.
