3, 2, then 1... Yeah, I can't stand clunky gameplay! When I'm not enjoying the controls, it ruins everything... That and the first game had very dull characters... except for Ashley... She was actually fun to talk to... Too bad I had to kill her for my canonShep... Darn you, Kaidan, for being the only romancable male!

For me, the original is the best. I just prefer it. It's me - I prefer RPG's to cover shooters.

I rank ME1 and 2 about equally and ahead of 3; this is in great part due to how each game has something the other does not and while 3 does make some improvements in many respects, it also seems to have a lot of steps backwards compared to its predecessors. As for what each game has going for or against it...
ME1:
+Best plot of the three games by far.
+Best main villains (Saren and Sovereign)
+Greatest degree of exploration
+Second best endgame
+Greatest diversity in skills
-Imbalanced combat mechanics that favor biotics, tedious at higher difficulties
-Clunky non-combat mechanics (Mako exploration, inventory)
-Worst dlc (Bring Down the Sky is decent, but Pinnacle Station is packaged tedium)

ME2:
+Best overall look, atmosphere and set pieces
+Best ensemble of cast members
+Best dialogue choices
+Most balanced combat mechanics in terms of classes and challenge
+Best endgame (honors choices, and allows great variability if you rather see certain characters die)
+Best dlc overall (Firewalker sucks, Price of Revenge is okay, but Stolen Memory, Overlord, and Lair of the Shadow Broker give it the gold)
-Shallow central plot, with a few too many things that strain suspension of disbelief
-Resource Scanning tedious and not the ideal replacement for planetary exploration
-Least amount of diversity in skills
-Numerous dlcs almost feels necessary for a whole experience (in regards to characters, weapons, and overall content available) though the PS3 port has most of it for free.

ME3:
+Best selection of weapons (in form and function) of all three games
+Multiplayer is surprisingly fun
+Second best dlc (Omega is overpriced and unpolished, but Javik makes From Ashes worth it, and Citadel is probably the best single dlc in the franchise)
+Most fluid combat mechanics and more balanced than 1, although less balanced than 2
-Worst plot of the three games due to the laziness of the central premise (build this machine to solve the entirety of the conflict!)
-Worst endgame with poorly conceived and executed endings
-Worst dialogue choices (due to abundance of auto-dialogue)
-Strange and ill-advised creative decisions and graphical errors throughout

easy choice:
1. mass effect one (and no nostalgia here, i play it on a regular basis)
why: best atmosphere
2. mass effect three
why: world/characters feel the most 'alive'
3. mass effect two
why: great game, just not as good as the above (the shadow broker dlc, on the other hand, is my favourite one, just brilliant)

Vanilla games?

ME2 > ME3 > ME1

All DLC considered?

ME3 = ME2 > ME1

I don't want to give the wrong impression though. I still loved the hell out of ME1.

For story and plot: ME1 hands down.

For better mechanics and character and dialog: ME2

For best gameplay and visuals ME3.

For WORST story: ME2 followed closely by McGuffin ME3

For worst RPG: ME3

For highest cost for least return: ME3

For highest productivity achieved while the game is running: ME3
Because while all the autodialog is going on you can do laundry, get the mail, read the paper, wash dishes, play with your dogs, mop the floor, take a dump, etc.  You just start the game and let it go all autopilot.  No effort, no fuss.

..Why did you quote me? I don't agree with a lot of what you said, but it didn't come off as a rebuttal.

I didn't pick you for any reason.  I simply took your selection and contrasted it with mine.

I like ME1 and ME3 equally as best, while ME2 for me is the worst.

ME2 was not bad game but was not as good as ME3 or ME1.

Harbinger as antagonist was more annoying then Kai Lang. The planet scanning was amazingly annoying, the hammerhead is more annoying than Mako to me. The story was worse than ME3 in that seemed to be come back from dead, run some daddy, sister, daughter, son issues, abandonment issues and such which was of no interest to me at all and felt they should have delt with their annoying issues before signing on to the mission. Working under TiM against my will the entire game until right at the end. Plus other stuff. In that game the negative outweighed the positive compared to the other two games (imho). But as said it was not a bad game overall it just had enough things I found annoying that it was worst for me out of the three games. Though all had good and bad aspects in all three. ME2 did have it's good aspects like Kasumi, Legion and even Thane but for most part was just too annoying.

Mass Effect 2 is my favourite by a considerable distance.

I loved the characters, the gameplay, the music, the interaction and the atmosphere.

It also ranks as my third favourite game of all time.

Me2 for me since it was the first game where you really started seeing the effects of the previous game being part of your new game not to mention a lot of my favourite characters got introduced in that game (Thane, Katsumi and Grunt) plus the suicide mission is still one of the best missions I've ever played.

Well, ME1 was clunky but it was the first, it was A first. They had to start somewhere and from there tried to improve on it ME3 controls were much better overall but the story and RPG elements sucked. The whole crucible thing was a massive McGuffin tossed in to save the day just in the nick of time. Ugh.

ME1 had an outstanding story that was fun to unfold. The dialog was heavily weighted to player preference but it was a first so it was a bit awkward. ME2 improved on the mechanics (but DAMN YOU sticky cover!) and the dialog and character development BUT the story was weak. It was a story worthy of a side mission, not a focus of an entire game - it added NOTHING to the bigger plot and it started in silly fashion: Shepard dies and gets magically resurrected WITH all his memories/experiences intact! WTF? You can clone an organism but that doesn't come with all memories and training that was in the original. ME2 Lair of the Shadow Broker was OUTSTANDING and fun. Too bad that didn't carry through to ME3.  ME2 dialog was also often VERY clumsy and facepalm-worthy ( think Samara's loyalty mission when you are "conversing" with Morinth in the bar.  Good god that was some ****** conversation.  Disjointed and all over the place then, bam!  Off to her room!).

ME3 was, by far, the best to control. They improved evolutionarily from 1 to 2 to 3. I had very little issue with the sticky cover issue in ME3 and jumping over cover or moving from cover to cover was nicely done. Story sucked and character development was meager and mostly on autopilot. Don't get me started on the weak and pathetic (and rude) eavesdropping side missions that were mainly luck and catch as catch can.

ME2 and 3 lost in not allowing interaction with squadmates during missions. ME1 allowed interaction (though it didn't always lead to anything interesting but sometimes...).

ME1.  It's gameplay may not be as polished as the sequels, but its story was the most coherent, and it wasn't buckling under the number of possible permutations.  It felt most like a science fiction story rather than a comic book.

Also, ended game feeling like hero.

ME2....ME3 isn't even on my favourite games list let alone my fave ME game list.

It's number 1 on my most disappointing games list though......damn that ending.

Don't get me wrong ME3 is not a bad game, it's still better than alot of other games....it just disappointed me the most.

1. ME1 - Great story. Ignore the gameplay because the game is old. Loved the music, especially Vigil theme. And...more hanar and elcor than ME2...alsoe more people to talk to, big worlds and no loading screens gave it the feeling that you were small in a BIG universe.
2. ME2 - Loved the story, the characters, the hub worlds, the bars...and suicide mission? The music, the choices. It was wonderfull.
3. ME3 - Game was good. The ending did anger me as did Tali photoshped face (I was waiting for big reveal for 5 years -.-) The music was good, the dlc decent (not mentioning Omega since it was a "pew-pew" type DLC). The game did seem rushed but it had it's shiny moments.

 ME2>ME>>ME3

I know DLC is supposed to count, but even though I enjoyed Citadel I don't think it's fair to judge the game by a fan-service DLC that came out a year after the game itself.

The first Mass Effect introduced us to the galaxy and took some of the biggest first steps for the entire franchise. It was the game that got me hooked. Side missions were a little stale, technical glitches marred the experience, and the combat was very bland (especially in retrospect), but the storytelling innovations were just fantastic. Meeting Sovereign and Vigil still stand out as two of the best moments in the trilogy for me. Plus, it has some great pacing.

Mass Effect 2 is easily the best because it was clearly a case of Bioware listening to fan feedback and highlighting the good while taking off the bad, AND adding more good. It realized that we loved the game for its atmosphere and its characters. It made the entire galaxy that much more atmospheric, and not only did it add a ton of new squadmates, it made character development among new and old squadmates a top priority. And, it added a great new semi-villain in the form of TIM. While the main story thread of ME2 wasn't the strongest, it didn't really matter as it wasn't the focus. The only real complaint I can levy against ME2 was its replacement of the frustrating Mako with boring planet-scanning. Graphical glitches were mostly gone (and the game's art direction was much improved), combat was actually a lot of fun, and even the music score got a revamp. ME2 is, for me, one of the best games of all time.

Mass Effect 3 is far down the list for me, but its much more of a mixed bag. The only reason I consider it to be even close to competitive with the other 2 is because what it does right, it does really well. The missions on Rannoch, Tuchanka, and in the Geth consensus are among the best. However, I also recognize that part of the reason those missions were so good was the built-up in the last 2 games. What I can't ignore is that ME3 had poor pacing, removed player control and choice in a lot of areas, chalked up prior choices to an arbitrary military "score", and even narratively it abandoned previous themes and gave us a MacGuffin almost from the onset. It was enjoyable, but there were some severe problems that couldn't be overlooked. In addition, the ending was just.. well I think we've talked about that enough.

I'm ranking these games based on how they stood on release (or with ME3, I'm even giving it the benefit of the EC DLC).

Mass Effect 2, easily. if ME1 had the controls and combat of ME2 it might be close. But ME2 is, in my opinion, the greatest game ever made.

ME2 is close, but ME3 takes the crown. For both the single- and multi-player. I loved the character, the stories, and the shenanigans in multi-player. I don't really know though if anything could beat the joy of strolling around as a geth prime (or juggernaut, if you prefer).

And... I really adore the geth. Legion was a wonderful character whom I just wanted to know more about, he was probably my favourite of the lot, and had some of the most philosophically interesting elements to offer. It was beautiful just to see the geth evolve through the course of it, with their largest upgrade being present in Synthesis. The Synthesis future's going to be pretty cool, with everyone mingling and being chummy.

I really wish I could see that future. I want to go and hang with sapient geth primes.

I think my love of the geth is one of the reasons Destroy bothers me so much - to kill off an entire race of critters that I have so much fondness for. Not that many could empathise with that. Just the bare few, the brilliant ones.

1. Mass Effect 2 - Incredible characterization. The loyalty missions really help give you a sense of who each character is, what drives them, and what vulnerabilities they may have. Even the Illusive Man is an extremely interesting character in this game before ME3 warps him into a traditional villain. Admittedly, the plot isn't extraordinary, but the focus of the game is clearly on the characters and the environments. And it sure delivered. The design of that game and its characters is flawless.

2. Mass Effect 1 - The clunky gameplay is a turn off for a lot of people, but I find it to be a minor issue when compared to all of the positives this game has to offer. It easily has the best plot of the three games and the best villain(s) in Saren/Sovereign. It also has the greatest sense of exploration, and it is the most RPG-like of the trilogy. There's also the nostalgia factor when talking about ME1. It was the first game of the trilogy, and it opened me up to this incredible universe that Bioware created.

3. Mass Effect 3 - All three games are incredibly close in my opinion. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. ME3's primary weaknesses are plot and characters. Obviously, the plot unravels at the end, but there are some definite high points to remember. Both the Tuchanka mission and the Rannoch mission were two of the trilogy's high points. Gut wrenching decisions, yet incredible outcomes if the right decisions are made. The gameplay was also the most fluid of the series, though I feel like 3 kind of turned into a straight shooter at times. Ultimately, I think this game succeeds most in the emotion it creates. To some people, the depressing tone is too heavy handed, but I thought it was fitting for the conclusion of the trilogy.
