In terms of combat, I will say it is really hard for me to go back to ME1 after playing ME3. Engineers in the first game are just...<_<

ME2 = Slightly better combat and slightly crappier plot
ME3 = Combat perfected, plot with massive gaps.
ME1 with ME3 combat and interactions would be pretty sweet. Time to wait for ME4...

Add ME3's Reputation system because ME1 (and especially ME2) forces you to be either extreme Paragon or Renegade to solve certain issues (getting Saren to kill himself, making Wrex stand down etc).ZeCollectorDestroya wrote...

Mass Effect 2. Its not its fault that ME3 had absolutely nothing to do with it, its ME3's fault.
Actually, it was EAware's fault for restructuring and putting Drew onto the SWTOR team, the fact that he left very shortly after just goes to show how much he didn't want to leave his precious.
Casey/Mac's decision to go the 'different ending' route, wasn't because it was too hard, but probably because it was Drew's idea. And when he left, so did his idea. Wish they could've/would've kept it. And least it was foreshadowed. Damn they really screwed up that ending, over a year now and I still can't believe it.
Worst.ending.ever.
....thats my point. Its not ME2's fault ME3 had nothing to do with it.
I don't think you understand how plot progression works in certain trilogies. It is ME2's fault because it departed from the plot set up in ME1. ME1 sets up a continuous trilogy, not an episodic one.
The number of people here that don't unstand how stories work boggles my mind.
People argue this so much, ME2 didn't even deviate that much, Was Harbinger not controlling the COllectors? And is Harbinger not a Reaper?
ME was always planned to be a trilogy, they couldn't go from stopping Sovereign to invasion straight away, there had to be some things set and explained first, like the Genophage and Reaper technology.
Heck, if ME2 wasn't what it was and ME1 jumped straight into ME3's plot. We would have been screwed even worse than we were in 3. The SR1 would not have been able to do the job the SR2 did.

I'm not really interested in which one is considered "best", though. There are strengths and weaknesses in all three.

ME1 is the best for me. Anyone complaining about anything in the game being too "out-dated" is really just acting pretentious. Obviously it's going to be outdated now, but it's not about what game is the best at this moment, it's what game did you enjoy the most. That enjoyment stretches back 5 years.
And speaking as someone who just finished ME1 last night, it's outdated. So I enjoyed it the least. When it came out is irrelevant to which games I enjoyed the most.
I only finished ME1 the other day as well, and so speaking from my experience then, it is not as outdated as some other games feel from 2007.
And of course it's not irrelevant. When you played it for the first time was it outdated?

The cone of uncertainity on the gun combat was terrible. The squad AI sucked/was non-existent. The enemy AI was pathetic. The inventory system was a total nightmare. The controls for consoles were beyond awful. Grenades were perhaps the worst implementation of those items I've ever seen. The level progression made the latter half of the game a total joke. Weapon selection/discrimination was non-existent (hint: SPECTRE weapons). Weapons mods made overheating a thing of the past so the only thing limiting your kill power went away.....oh and then we get generic UCW's and the abomination of all things that was the MAKO that you couldn't avoid like the Hammerhead in ME2.
You didn't play ME1 for the game part. You played it for the story, for the characters and for moments like that first meeting with Harbinger and tolerated having to play the game in between those parts.

ME2 had it all. It had interesting characters, a properly lit ship, morally ambiguous Cerberus, along with quite a few moral choices and fun bits to have me play it over more than a few times.

It's something that the casual / mainstream gamer crowd doesn't like, because tried to be unique. ME1 has its flaws , at least it is different from most games. The casual gamers love to complain how games are all the same, yet love when ME2 and ME3 , that conformed to the "standards" of gameplay in which we see today in most shooters.
2) Mass Effect 3 - Brought the series back on course, but killed the series at the same time. Mass Effect 3 is a FAR second. At the end though, it has the same problems as Mass Effect 2. Both were created for Mass Appeal. Also, the game rendered all of our choices useless from previous games.
3) Mass Effect 2 - The series went from Mass Effect to Mass Appeal, starting this game. Dumbed down gameplay, almost no RPG elements, easier enemies(enemies in ME1 had all the powers you did), pointless plot, and (War assets) via loyalty missions. This is why I find it hard to believe fans of Mass Effect 2 could dislike Mass Effect 3 other than the ending. ME2 and ME3 are pretty much the same game(most so gameplay), but slightly more RPG and more action.

But just about every aspect of the game, story, characters, missions, ending, squad mates, are ME1 favorites.

ME2 was a side mission story expanded into a full game. A diversion. It was also an attempt to retcon Cerberus, rendering ALL the encounters with Cerberus from ME1 into a long list of "rogue" Cerberus operations. Funny, a rogue terrorist organization filled with nothing BUT further rogue elements from itself.
While I agree ME2 was basically a very large side mission, we found out so little about Cerberus in ME1 that it can't really be a retcon, as you need something in place to retcon first.
Besides, in all media released so far, Cerberus is repeatedly shown as an inherently unstable organisation populated by a high percentage of people who are, for various reasons, equally unstable. It's not surprising they have so many rogue elements.

2. Mass Effect 2. I don't know. It had a huge impact on me when I first played it, and that's why I often consider it to be a more memorable game than ME3, but near-perfection of ME3, gameplay-wise at least, makes ME2's faults all the more jarring. Still a great game, but not as good as it first was.
3. Mass Effect 1. Played it two times and only to have two 'perfect' save files. The last hour is fantastic, true, but everything leading up to it... ugh. It's a cavalcade of bad decisions, from the clunky combat to the bland dialogue, from the stale environments to the horrible inventory system. The story is good, but not as good as some make it out to be. I don't see myself playing this game again soon.

Post-Citadel:
I can no longer comprehend the trilogy as separate entities. As far as I'm concerned, it's now one big cohesive story. Still think the Suicide Mission is kind of the best thing ever, though.
