Hi all
I'm a little confused about how NWN2's attack bonus works.
I have a character who's a level 2 sorc/level1 paladin, an aasimar, wielding a shortbow. The character has a +2 modifier to dex, and a BAB of 2, for a total of 4.

However, in the combat logs, I often see a range of numbers between +0 to +7.

However, even given a +2 for flanking, I'm not sure where this additional +1 would come from.

If it helps, I'm currently fighting lizardlings with Bevil in the OC.

Are there other circumstances that would give my character an additional +1?

Thanks for your time!

[Edit: Typo on levels]

Not sure, but maybe someone cast Aid, Bless, or Prayer on you? Those give a +1 to attack.

Hi Tchos,

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case :\\ Thanks for the suggestion though!

Unless it's possible that the game is invisibly (and randomly) providing Aid/bless/prayer on this low level mission as a sort of "training wheel?"

For some reason I'm finding this "phantom +1" really annoying!

Well, I'm assuming that the shortbow is a common shortbow, and not a +1 shortbow. How about feats? Have you selected any feat that would give you a +1 attack bonus with that weapon?

Hmm. I don't think Bevil has the "Natural Leader" background, does he? He definitely doesn't look like a leader to me. What are your feats? Race? Halflings get a +1 with slings and throwing weapons, but not with shortbows AFAIK. Any icon next to your char's portrait?

You can open the console and type:

debug mode 1
enablecombatdebugging 1
debug mode 0

That shows the AB modifiers so maybe you can see it that way. Then type the same but ending the second command with a 0 to deactivate it.

Range would only matter if he has Point Blank Shot (he'd get +1 at short range so that could be it if he has the feat).

As for the others, he said his DEX was 14, FE doesn't increase AB unless you have Bane of Enemies (and it's only for rangers, yes), initiative doesn't affect AB, luck... shouldn't, and kind DMs just don't exist.

@Morbane: A kind DM would be interesting! :)
@Tchos: Yep, just a regular shortbow!
@Tchos and Arkalezth: Unfortunately, I don't think I have feats selected that give an extra +1. Outside of the default class/racial/storyline feats, my feat list is as follows:
Blessed of Waukeen, Devout, Able Learner, and Spellcasting Prodigy.
And Bevil doesn't appear to have the Natural Leader feat.

@Arkalezth: The combat debugging suggestion was very helpful thank you! This is what I saw: Occasionally a bonus called "Mission Volley Bonus" would kick in! My Google-fu is not the best, but a few others have noticed this as well:

Sadly, I was unable to find out more about this mysteroius bonus though. Although it appears my "training wheels" theory could be a little off, since the other two links seem to indicate that this bonus is randomly active.

That "mission volley bonus" sounds familiar, but I don't know how it works or why. I guess Morbane's "luck" theory is the closest one.

Try firing at different ranges (besides the well-known -4 at melee range) and see if you get different bonuses.

A bit delayed, but after some (very) quick testing, I think the bonus may be related to the number of consecutive misses. Thanks for the help Arkalezth!

P.S. Nice avatar pic on nwn2db :)
