Very much this - If they are lower leveles and aren't throwing on gear, they may have no missiles - gels - op packs.
Ugly.

There's a high probability of failure in lobbies that don't use equipment.

45% chance of a wave one bloodbath. It's survivable, but you'll have to solo.

If they didn't want to use equipment, they were probably either a) EZ moding it, in which case you probably don't want to be in a box for 40 minutes, or

And no, it has saved me quite a few times; I've been surprised time and time again by how much equipment actually helps.

whats the point of having equipment if you don't use it, its not like it can hurt your chances of surviving. However I can see the appeal, I sometimes like to go completly vanilla and see how skillful i can be.

I consider Platinum a waste of time in addition to Equipment when you pretty much have to have everything be ****ing perfect. Expert players, good teamwork, lots of communication, timed synergy of powers, top-tier characters and weapons, etc.. You can't use whatever the Hell you want and still have a good chance to succeed like you can in Gold, provided you know how the game works of course. There's little to no room for role-playing, just a bunch of strict optimum bull****. It's miserable as ****.
After dipping into it a bit this weekend, I've actually found that's not true. Some kits you'll have an easier time with than others, but that's true of any difficulty.
I've so far used the Batarian Slasher, Turian Soldier, Krogan Warlord, and Geth Juggernaut to great success on Platinum. I purposefully left Infiltrators off of that list, since that's sorta a given. (I want to draw particular attention to the Warlord, as that's something a lot of people don't even think is Gold viable.)
You don't even really need to communicate, honestly. Yeah, expert players are a must (what would you expect from the hardest difficulty in a difficult game?), but it's actually pretty forgiving about mistakes. Usually.
I also want to particularly note, that I'm not some super1337pro at this game. I just played Bronze, then I dipped into some Silver, made Silver a regular thing, dipped into Gold, made Gold a regular thing, and now I'm dipping into Platinum. And it only took me one year (lol. Seriously though, I actually took it pretty damn slow.) The best way to ensure Platinum success is: kick people who you think shouldn't be playing Platinum. If anyone isn't using at least penultimate level consumables (i.e. AP Rounds III, Shotgun Rail Amp II, Shield Power Cells II), or they just really don't have very good weapons on (that is an issue with Platinum, at some point you will NEED to use a weapon.), or both, then kick them and wait for someone else who does.
I thought it was insane at first, too. But once you get used to it, it really isn't that bad at all. (Word of advice, though: Unless you plan on hugging an ammo crate all game, and I mean literally hovering it at ALL TIMES, Cerberus Harrier = BAD)

That's what I did too. I never made myself a burden upon other players on difficulty levels I was not prepared for. Played Bronze 'til I was ready for Silver, played Silver 'til I was ready for Gold, played Platinum and said "**** this and **** the people in the quick match lobbies! I'll sooner mine a one pound Diamond than find a decent player who isn't Particle Rifle Destroyer #4,682 or Harrier Ghost #5,391!"
And kicking people you feel are unprepared on Platinum is yet another thing that makes it a waste of time, at least with my 'luck.' You get some **** with no Equipment on and low-level Uncommons, who you see (Thanks to info the N7HQ) has no Medi-Gel or Rockets or whatever. So you kick him... and her comes another one, and another one, and finally you get one person you THINK might be cut out for this, but he turns out to be a good-for-nothing jerkoff who goes running off by himself as he tests a crazy-ass 'hipster' build and never revives himself even though you saw he had 255 Medi-Gel on the HQ.
Sorry for sounding like a stubborn ass, but that's my experience of suspicion and disappointment with Platinum. Screw it.
