Say it's $10/month, what would the subscribers get out of the deal?

Upgraded/dedicated servers?
New Content?
Map Maker toolset?
Discount at the store?
In lobby text chat?

I'll be honest, I know this game won't be around forever, and I would be tempted to pay a monthly to keep it going, but as it stands right now, there aren't enough incentives for me

Not to disrespect your view and opinion, but even if they implemented the content you mention i will not pay to play a game i allready have payed for, some of those features you mention would be nice.
However, the store does allready have discounts on games from time to time.
Would the new content be free? (i asume you mean content for the games you own) otherwise you would pay to have extra content where you have to pay for  in order to install it.
A map maker toolset would be nice, but how i see it, is that you still have to pay for expanding their game, wich you have bought allready, such features has to come with the game imo, i'm willing to pay more for a game if such tools are implemented.
For me that leaves only the text chat, and ~10$ a month for a text chat is a bit expensive imo.
Dedicated servers a mandatory for any company launching a game with MP features. People pay for their entire product and that means they have to make sure said product can be used properly, otherwise it's like buying a car and have to pay extra to have a stearingwheel installed.
This is just my opinion on your post, and  this topic (my previous post in this thread was a bit blunt, so i took this oportunity to be a bit more civilised (i hope :innocent:)

Those are all fair points and lookng back I was confusing things I would pay for in a service and things I would like to see implemented in MP.

For Origin as a service
-Better servers (fewer disconnects)
-Store discount
-Early exclusives

And in game incentives to purchase a premium membership
-Discount for in game purchases
-Player toolsets/creation kits (items, maps, etc)
-Early access to new content
-Dedicated serevers to expand the life of the game (which ties into the toolsets)

I would not pay for things that Steam has successfully implemented for free, such as gifting, text chat, and being able to play in offline single player mode. EA has said that they are planning going all digital at some point, and for PC users, that means dealing with Origin. I have no doubt that somewhere, in an unnamed EA office, there is a document discussing implementing a premium service, so at the moment I would rather state what I would pay for and why, rather than rage at Origin.

I might be right on some points, I might be wrong, I'm just spitballing right now. I'll probably think of something else or even change my mind in the next few hours

Steam provides those for free too. Check under the Tools section of your library some time.

Yes, let's give EA more ideas on ways to devour the soul of gaming for profit.

I would pay to get rid of Origin, not to keep using it.

Sorry that people hav choices and appreciate consoles. PC is nice, but not everything, Mass Effect wouldn't even be here with out Xbox.

I don't get it, way pay for a game and then pay again every month to be allowed to use it?
That's just EA making me bend over twice.
If they can't get their servers working, why not just allow players to make their own servers like back in the good old days of Q3A and UT?
A pitty that this stupid store with microtransactions would not work in this case.

PAY FOR ORIGIN?!

Are you out of your mind? Even if it was totally reliable, completely fixed, and offered all those extra features that would only make it PC-average. As in, the lowest and most basic STANDARD of what we expect. (Steam is essentially what you're suggesting and it's completely free)

Asking people to pay would be robbery.

This.

Would have had a smaller budget without XBoX but it would still probably exist (or something similar); the early precursors to Mass Effect (such as NWN and NWN2) existed without the XBoX - you've got to program the game on something, build the underlying engine, build the 3D models and texture maps on somehting, build the maps on something - and that something will have been a PC (or rather, lots of them and Macs and some rendering farms no doubt). Every game is a PC game in the workshop.

And yet, we don't have to deal with an Origin-like service. If I have to pay $5 a month, so be it.

Which goes to show what a loss consoles are.  Wasn't microsoft selling xbox 360 at a loss to get the market started?

It would have been better to just bundle a graphics card and controller.

PC users don't have to deal with Origin.  They can just walk away because they have real choices.  The only real choice console users have it to use a PC instead.

Ummm - you kinda do, it's called XBoX Live... you don't have any choice in the matter; but it's essentially the same thing.

The situation on the PC is that you've got several of these things; Steam being the most prominent... but EA decided to cut Valve out of the equation by creating their own Steam-a-like service (it kind of evolved from the EADM which Spore used) and they then refused to release prominent titles on Steam so PC gamers had no choice but to use Origin if they wanted to play those games. It's basically business-based control-freakery and arse-hattery done purely to shaft Steam.

Now, imagine if Microsoft did an "upgrade" to the XBL that was buggy and had shoddy servers that couldn't cope when a new game is released and as an added bonus, also had less features and a worse UI than the previous incarnation of XBL... that's kinda what it's like having to use Origin vs Steam.

You have to deal with Origin to play Mass Effect 3.

The hardware is generally sold as a loss-leader with consoles that's why the games are more expensive.

I rather not experience the whole xbox silver/gold division on the PC. I rather not have always on DRM in single player to reduce cheating in multiplayer.
