Ummm - you kinda do, it's called XBoX Live... you don't have any choice in the matter; but it's essentially the same thing.

The situation on the PC is that you've got several of these things; Steam being the most prominent... but EA decided to cut Valve out of the equation by creating their own Steam-a-like service (it kind of evolved from the EADM which Spore used) and they then refused to release prominent titles on Steam so PC gamers had no choice but to use Origin if they wanted to play those games. It's basically business-based control-freakery and arse-hattery done purely to shaft Steam.

Now, imagine if Microsoft did an "upgrade" to the XBL that was buggy and had shoddy servers that couldn't cope when a new game is released and as an added bonus, also had less features and a worse UI than the previous incarnation of XBL... that's kinda what it's like having to use Origin vs Steam.

I don't have to deal with all of the terrible service Origin provides is what I meant.

PC users don't have to deal with Origin.  They can just walk away because they have real choices.  The only real choice console users have it to use a PC instead.

But we endure for ME3 multiplayer. When that sad day comes where EA pulls server support I will leave and never look back. Unless of course they don't realize their error and make ME4 Origin exclusive as well.

Then I might consider ritual Seppuku

people only use the dumb thing because ME3 isnt on steam.

so this whole "would you pay a fee?" is really just silly.

No. Steam is alot more stable and doesn't have a subscription.

This, plus the comment pointing out that Origin is also a store and we shouldn't have to pay for that.

My bottom line, Origin should be as good as Steam; and like Steam, no fees attached.

To charge a fee, it would have to be something startlingly better that Steam, to include the servers.

Maybe if Origin reaches that point, we can discuss.

And no, Xbox is not startlingly better.

Fair enough - yeah, off the top of my head I can think of Steam, UPlay (the Ubisoft version), Battle.net (the Blizzard version) and Origin (the EA version)*... and of those, Origin is the worst (it's also the least mature so I suspect it'll improve) - Battle.net has problems too ( *coughs Diablo III launch*)... weirdly the only one I've never had problems with is UPlay, but that's possibly because I've only got 1 game that requires it and don't play that very often.

There are far more competing services on the PC which means you have to deal with more of these things... but on the plus-side, if Origin goes down I can always crank up Steam and play something else. If the XBL goes down you're scuppered.

* there was also Gamespy (server browser mainly) which I think is pretty much defunct now and gog (store mainly)... there's probably others I've missed.

In over nine hells and twenty lifetimes would I ever pay a single cent in order to play multiplayer games. EA is greedy and destructive enough so 'screw you ala Jack style' no.

I have an even better idea: why not just fix these problems in the first place? Then there would be no issues!

And BTW, when I am able to install and play used games without issues, able to play while disconnected to the internet, and have no more of this "online pass" BS (a problem which I currently have right now), then we can talk about donations to Origin.

Or get rid of it, I got ME3 on xbox so i could avoid downloading that crappy spyware. Honestly i prefer having all my games in one library and steam is fine at doing that.

Not sure what motivation EA has to improve Origin at all while the store is functioning.

Steam is better and I don't have to pay for it. I'd happily drop ME3 rather than pay a bloody subscription for something like Origin.

Speaking of free and Steam, PlanetSide 2 is a shining example of exactly how craptastic ME3's netcode and/or servers are. If PS2 can be done, why is it so hard to keep a stable connection for a 4-player co-op game?

If I could settle for unbuffed origin without paying, fine. Otherwise, goodbye origin and ea

I would be happier without Origin at all. Can't stand it. Slow servers and crap service at EA. Probably the worst game client I have ever seen, so no.

Nope - for Origin is by itself a (fairly crappy, as most things at EA are) tool to play - attention! - already bought games online, as well as some sort of an anti-piracy tool. Why the f*** should I besides pay for it?

Origin offers nothing that superior platforms do (see Steam) but for the same cost.

To save breaking the universe and dividing by zero, let's just say it's invasive garbage.
