I don't think so. My characters are almost always the same when I get the chance and I have never tried to experiment beyond the ridiculously nice PC. Even when I attempt to create another character with a slightly more murkier moral compass- I fail.

I think nice is hardcoded into my playing style to the extent I cannot step out of it...even for content reasons. If it means missing out on companions, quests or plot twists, so be it.

I always try to put as much of myself into my character as possible. It doesn't usually work out though because few games have both a great customization system and a morality system, but from the looks of things that's about to change =)

I always RP as myself as best I can first time through. So see my avive

Living in the slums of the dwarf city will surely affect my decisions, but just because I may be a 'thug-for-hire' I can be a really protective thug

Yes and no.

I do like trying to come up with some sort of personality and background for the characters I create, but don't follow through with it too much because the dialogue options most likely wont fit what I think my character would do--not that the dialogue will be bad in any way.

Though, I did do some RPing with KotOR for awhile on a fansite. So, we'd pretty much write our versions of all of the main characters, while in some ways trying to stay loyal to how they were in-game. Those were some good times.

I do in so far as it helps me to create a "look" for my character. Beyond that, probably not.

Unless you consider a mercenary attitude to be roleplaying.

Most of the time, I try to. I usually come up with at least a few rough character ideas to play with, and I usually roleplay myself at least once. Sometimes I'll just wing it though, and other times I have trouble 'forgetting' what I, the player know, from previous playthroughs, since my characters won't know the same things yet.

I always RP. I may even go too obsessively far with a designed background private motivation beyond what is supplied by the game, etc. I have dorktastic tendencies.

I do find I have trouble with the truly evil backgrounds though. I have tried, but I never get far. Either the character ends up abandoned or I have them 'redeem' themselves. There are a number of games that have played over twenty times but still haven't seen the evil ending for.

I do tend to play at least slightly deranged characters. This spawns from a belief that choosing to be an adventurer is at least slightly crazy.

Same here, though I think my characters' altruism is hardcoded more along the lines of a practical survivability. At least for RPG OCs, one can safely assume beforehand that the ultra-good path will be the most rewarding in terms of companion loyalty and quest returns. Though in modules where PCs are actually rewarded for being bad or not paragons of shining virtue (like the various rogue and assassin-themed modules for NWN1), I accordingly find it easier to RP a character along those lines. One of my most memorable characters so far was a Shadowdancer / Assassin female from my NWN days, although once again she had a bit of a Robin Hood complex going on in "killing for a greater purpose". Was a lot of fun though, heh.

I always roleplay. Always, always, always. It is some sacred unbroken rule that has been scrubbed into my very soul. I never play roleplaying games, such as these, with myself and what I would do in mind. I play a character that I have crafted based on the gameworld's lore, setting, and background. This is why I love these games so much -- and why I play them!

Exactly, But I am flexible in my roleplaying regard and pragtmatic in my views. Awesome character btw.

That so fits you Liana.

I do, unconsciously at least.  I never set out to go ahead and RP my character, it just comes out naturally.  Even if it's a game that has a set character you play, I end up playing it to my style.  Changes with different races.  Always great to have a running story in my head regardless of the game.

My wife laughs at me if she is near and I end up talking to myself, or rather the screen....a little embarrassing but I think after 5 years she's used to it.

I'm an obsessive roleplayer to the extent that I roleplay even in games that don't really support it in any way. However, when it comes to DA:O I've had a bit of trouble. Normally I'd have really strong character concepts for all my planned characters, but since I know relatively little of the origins, I can only pick a few characteristics for each of them before actually experiencing the origins. Still, I think it's exciting this way, since the origins will end up influencing my characters a lot.

Usually my first character is always a shades of grey type of person, not really good but not evil either. After that I will play whatever I feel like playing, be it good or evil characters, and they always have reasons for why they are the way they are. However, I really need to put myself in the right mindset to play a thoroughly evil character, because otherwise I end up feeling sorry for all the people whose lives s/he's ruining...

Not really.. I've found that I play most characters well on the good side of the spectrum. I'll bash in locks and grab that diamond from the trunk in an inn, but I will also go out of my way to help some NPC with a sob story, and I won't rob anyone at swordpoint, extort, or kill neutrals for personal gain.
RPing a truly evil person means constant reminding myself of my "mission". I must admit I've never finished any crpg as evil...

Absolutely!

I love RPing my characters, and one of the things I'm wanting / going to do with this particular tool, meaning the Social network is with my blog. I'm going to take my characters and essentially make journal entries for them, to tell the tale of what's going on in the game from an extended view of their own perspective, to give some insight as to who they are, their motivations and the like aside from what the game reveals. It's something I've been considering and something I think will add some depth to it.

As some other here I play my first character as a near image of my self, my avatar is a slightly glorified version of me =) After that I RP to some extent but I don't do backgrounds story's and so on, I'm to lazy for that.

Actually, that was something I had in mind as well, but we'll see if the game consumes all my time as it is ;) I've done a similar thing with tabletop RPG characters in the past, which was a lot of fun, but pretty time consuming. An example: kotisivu.suomi.net/emm/amara/, which is an old site dedicated to a character of mine in a fantasy RPG (forgive the layout and the possible typos, it's been a long time since I last updated it).

In the end you always end up having your favorite characters in the bunch, whether you create a handful or close to a hundred. It's hard not to create an attitude and persona early on for them. Like my avatar Ugrain here. She's a violent, loud, sarcastic little noble who will undoubtedly wield some large weapons along with her heart of gold. Now whether that heart of gold favors small animals or fresh produce over the peasants, I haven't quite decided yet.
But you have to remember, you're always going to create those flavorless characters who's well being you don't really care about and who have very little heart put into them. Those are the guys you make multiple game run-throughs with, testing specs, storylines and the many many many ways to die games like these offer. Guinea pigs, drones, crash dummies.

Oh yes. I already have some personality ideas for characters. But my computer sucks so I'll just have to wait and make them when the game comes out. blegh, oh well.

I actually did the same thing when i made my characters! i created several characters (all with their own background) and reason for choosing what. I didn't write them down, but i have it all in my head which is enough :)

kinda funny people do it like that, imagination / fantasy is a great thing.

I found myself giving my characters personalities while I was making them. For example, as I tweaked Roisin (social.bioware.com/5832/albums/5044/540) I started to see her as being fairly arrogant, and though for the most part her pride would make her trustworthy I could see her easily slipping into being able to justify doing bad things "for the greater good". Same goes for all the others in my album.

For the most part yes. I don't usually take it to any extremes (like, actually role-playing the character's life 100%). I get a good idea of who this character is and act upon that in game on the choices I am offered - even then it's not like I go out of my way to do it, I'm only rp'ing how I want to play anyhow!

Exception is if the game just throws something so great at you that it's hard to turn away from, then I'll do it even if it is not what my character would do - but that is rare especially if you play a more morally devoid character as you already get all the fun.

Edit: The more I think on it... this just seems to be more a bias towards decision making then actual RP. Hmm, maybe that's a debate for a future thread!
