I think nice is hardcoded into my playing style to the extent I cannot step out of it...even for content reasons. If it means missing out on companions, quests or plot twists, so be it.

Living in the slums of the dwarf city will surely affect my decisions, but just because I may be a 'thug-for-hire' I can be a really protective thug

I do like trying to come up with some sort of personality and background for the characters I create, but don't follow through with it too much because the dialogue options most likely wont fit what I think my character would do--not that the dialogue will be bad in any way.
Though, I did do some RPing with KotOR for awhile on a fansite. So, we'd pretty much write our versions of all of the main characters, while in some ways trying to stay loyal to how they were in-game. Those were some good times.

Unless you consider a mercenary attitude to be roleplaying.

I do find I have trouble with the truly evil backgrounds though. I have tried, but I never get far. Either the character ends up abandoned or I have them 'redeem' themselves. There are a number of games that have played over twenty times but still haven't seen the evil ending for.
I do tend to play at least slightly deranged characters. This spawns from a belief that choosing to be an adventurer is at least slightly crazy.

Same here, though I think my characters' altruism is hardcoded more along the lines of a practical survivability. At least for RPG OCs, one can safely assume beforehand that the ultra-good path will be the most rewarding in terms of companion loyalty and quest returns. Though in modules where PCs are actually rewarded for being bad or not paragons of shining virtue (like the various rogue and assassin-themed modules for NWN1), I accordingly find it easier to RP a character along those lines. One of my most memorable characters so far was a Shadowdancer / Assassin female from my NWN days, although once again she had a bit of a Robin Hood complex going on in "killing for a greater purpose". Was a lot of fun though, heh.imported_beer wrote...
I don't think so. My characters are almost always the same when I get the chance and I have never tried to experiment beyond the ridiculously nice PC. Even when I attempt to create another character with a slightly more murkier moral compass- I fail.

Exactly, But I am flexible in my roleplaying regard and pragtmatic in my views. Awesome character btw.Deviija wrote...
I always roleplay. Always, always, always. It is some sacred unbroken rule that has been scrubbed into my very soul. I never play roleplaying games, such as these, with myself and what I would do in mind. I play a character that I have crafted based on the gameworld's lore, setting, and background. This is why I love these games so much -- and why I play them!

I do in so far as it helps me to create a "look" for my character. Beyond that, probably not.

I do, unconsciously at least. I never set out to go ahead and RP my character, it just comes out naturally. Even if it's a game that has a set character you play, I end up playing it to my style. Changes with different races. Always great to have a running story in my head regardless of the game.
My wife laughs at me if she is near and I end up talking to myself, or rather the screen....a little embarrassing but I think after 5 years she's used to it.

Usually my first character is always a shades of grey type of person, not really good but not evil either. After that I will play whatever I feel like playing, be it good or evil characters, and they always have reasons for why they are the way they are. However, I really need to put myself in the right mindset to play a thoroughly evil character, because otherwise I end up feeling sorry for all the people whose lives s/he's ruining...

RPing a truly evil person means constant reminding myself of my "mission". I must admit I've never finished any crpg as evil...

I love RPing my characters, and one of the things I'm wanting / going to do with this particular tool, meaning the Social network is with my blog. I'm going to take my characters and essentially make journal entries for them, to tell the tale of what's going on in the game from an extended view of their own perspective, to give some insight as to who they are, their motivations and the like aside from what the game reveals. It's something I've been considering and something I think will add some depth to it.

But you have to remember, you're always going to create those flavorless characters who's well being you don't really care about and who have very little heart put into them. Those are the guys you make multiple game run-throughs with, testing specs, storylines and the many many many ways to die games like these offer.

Exception is if the game just throws something so great at you that it's hard to turn away from, then I'll do it even if it is not what my character would do - but that is rare especially if you play a more morally devoid character as you already get all the fun.
Edit: The more I think on it... this just seems to be more a bias towards decision making then actual RP. Hmm, maybe that's a debate for a future thread!
