Right now I'm about 25 hours into Mass Effect 2 after my first-ever playthrough of Mass Effect 1 (both for PC).

- Installed without any issues and started up perfectly (unlike ME2)

- Kind of bummed with the poor/lack of instructions for the game series, thus far (I didn't know anything about changing your psych profile/background in ME1 until I accidentally read about it on the wiki)

- The galaxy map was one of the coolest features of any game I've ever played

- I preferred Nihlus to Garrus and Shiali to Liara. It felt like Nihlus was being built up, but not for what happened -__-

- Your chat with Sovereign = f**king spectacular

- Beyond superb casting and soundtrack.

There were only two, major downsides to the game:

1) Driving and exploring in the Mako got old, but at least it took 30-40 hours out of 75 hours played.
2) The level cap was ridiculously stupid. I had Maroon, Virmire, and Ilos to go when I reached leve 50...

I was, at first, supremely disappointed. It was nothing like Jade Empire or KOTOR; the combat was clunky and clumsy, Shepard got glued to cover or couldn't get off of it at the exact wrong moments, and wtf was with not being able to independently order my squadmates (consoles, consoles, consoles. Sigh...)
Then, I got off of Eden Prime, went to the Citadel, and became a Spectre; in other words, the story took off.
And I was hooked. I looked past the retarded gameplay decisions, the endlessly repeating side mission locations, and that damned Mako. I saw that story, the writing and the acting. I began to breathe life into my Shepard, make him what I wanted, and I never looked back.

I've beaten the game with every class across two platforms now, and it is still as magical to me as it ever was. I must admit, the first few hours of a new playthrough drag a bit, but then the game becomes a comfort, like those old slippers you keep year after year despite their disrepair. I eat it up, and I enjy every bit of it until the credits finish rolling, long after M4 P2 has stopped. There are very few games, books, movies or albums I can say the same of.

I truly love Mass Effect. I love getting lost in it's universe, I love dusting it off and running a character or two once or twice a year. I'm glad I got to enjoy it as it was happening. I was too young for Star Wars, but I imagine going to a theatre back in 1977 and seeing it for the first time would be a lot like how I felt playing ME way back in 2008.

I'm a Dragon Age fanboy, but my friend is a Mass Effect nut, so we convinced each other to play the others' games.

I found the (PC) controls a little clunky - in my opinion every change they made in to the gameplay in ME2 was for the better. Plus, having played DA:O, I came to recognise the pattern of the Bioware story-arc.

I'll admit that I didn't fully understand every story thread throughout, and my playstyle was totally unsuited to the Infiltrator class I chose. But ME2, which I played straight after, rocketed my opinion of the ME franchise. After that (I always like to play new games blind), I looked around for character builds and guides, and gave them another go. In my opinion, Bioware games simply get better with more playthroughs. Have already done four playthroughs and tempted by a fifth...

I thought it was the best game I ever played. I was instantly in love with the universe, the characters and the dialogue.

And 5 years later I still am. Only now I think ME2 is the best game I ever played.

Currently playing Mass Effect 1 for the 9th time. Despite most of the side quests being the same thing over and over again, I really loved the main campaign and the squadmates you pick up. Oddly enough, my brother got me the first game for x-mas a few years back. I honestly didn't think I'd like it at all but I was hooked. That talk with Sovereign on Virmire still gives me chills and find myself in awe of the attack on the Citadel. Despite some flaws, I still adore this game.

Honestly...

So when it came out, I dismissed it since it was an "RPG" and I thought that meant it would be like Final Fantasy or the like. I was mainly interested in FPS or RTS at the time. A friend told me that it was good though. I had seen some KOTR, but didn't put the two together...

Anyway, it was a lot better than I expected. The story was quite strong for a video game, and the characters were overall fairly interesting. Combat was a bit different, but you got used to it. Story sort of made me forgive some of the clunkiness. Overall it became my favorite game.

At least until I bought Mass Effect 2...

I loved it, and having recently beaten it, am deeply engrossed in the story. The Mako and side quests were painful in their repetition but that was overshadowed by the main quest's quality. Meeting Sovereign is something I'll remember forever. It took me a while to get into it, but I ended up loving it. To me, it's more than the sum of its parts. I think it's a 9.7-10/10 for me.

the very first thing I thought when I started my first ME1-campaign was "Ah, my character's name is Shepard. I see what you did there." :-) (Admittedly,I didn't know anything about Mass Effect other than it was made Bioware when I bought it).

and while I didn't like the ME3-ending I found the stargazer-scene and the line "tell me another story about THE Shepard" quite cool because it referred back to my very first impression with the trilogy.

For me I got sucked into the story at the very start I created my Shepard and seeing him talk which had me engrossed even more with a new sci-fi universe exploring planets in our universe (even though the Mako is terrible to drive ok the hammerhead just as bad) taking my time watching the story build up to the epic ending was so worth being the second Xbox 360 game I got for my collection. Even since 2008 I still play it and right now I am playing it on the Playstation 3 just for the nostalgia.

I remember a day or so before I picked it up, I was talking to a friend at work, and he mentioned if I loved RPG's that I needed to try this. I'm one of those guys that played KOTOR 1 and 2 about 472394739842734 hours a piece.

When I first picked up the game, I thought "hmm this looks cool, I'm sure it won't touch KOTOR though..." by the maker was I wrong. The first thing that floored me was the dialogue system, it was like above and beyond at that time for me. The story, the characters, the lore, and different worlds and races just blew me away.

I'm truly blessed to experience this game, the only thing I hate is that for all I try I can't experience the game again like I did the first time. I wish I could forget this game existed, just for it to blow my mind again.

My first thought: Damn, I'm home.

Just replayed ME1 and I was dreading the Mako missions going in, but I found that this time I actually enjoyed them. The spectacular skies of these alien hell-planets really got me in the exploring the vastness of space mood, but of course the cookie-cutter bunkers were still annoying.

You kind of have to head canon Cerberus in ME1 being a small, rogue organization with some scattered small facilities to 2 years later having infrastructure and resources that rival galactic powers, but hey whatever. I guess we only saw a tiny, splinter faction in ME1.

What the recent playthrough really got me thinking is that I wish ME2 and 3 used the same skill system as the first one; it's way more detailed compared to the uber dumbed down version you get in ME2.

The first time I played ME1, I couldn't get past the Citadel in the beginning. I found it to be long, drawn out and boring. The thing is, I was stuck in swordplay type games and I hated (absolutely HATED) space type games because everything looked the same (shiny and metal) and I was awful with shooting.
I eventually gave up and stopped playing, only to return a year later to play Mass Effect 2 (given to me by a friend). I absolutely adored the game and just fell in love with the characters. Not one to leave things incomplete, I went back to ME1 and once I got past the Citadel (and since I was used to the way the game played thanks to ME2), I fell in love all over again.
Mass Effect is one of my favorite obsessions.
The things that disappointed from the first game were:
1) Femshep didn't have a lot of romance options. And Kaidan wasn't very appealing to me
2) Wrex wasn't romanceable (what can I say? I love that Krogan more than is natural)
3)The asari were forced down your throat. I don't HATE the asari, it's just that no matter what, Bioware seemed to want you to be attracted to them and I wasn't. I could have brushed it off if they would have stopped making every damn asari hit on my Shepard.
4) Liara was a forced character. Don't get me wrong, I'm neutral when it comes to the asari scientist, but once again, Bioware tried to MAKE me love something I didn't care about.
5) There were no comments during the Mako rides (I just think it would have been hilarious to have your crew members comment on Shepard's driving)

I was interested the moment I started to play, but the controls took getting used to, even though I was used to PC. By the time I got to the Citadel, I was in full awesome. I poked around and talked to every single toon.

I was NOT a fan of the elevators. But I also didn't use the transit system, so I slogged through it. God, I hated the elevators. You'd think that by the time we can cross the galaxy in a day or two, we might have made faster elevators. I did enjoy the banter between party members - it's just a pity that it almost exclusively took place in elevator cars.

It was not until my second play through that I realized that there is a quest you don't get unless you hear it on the news while riding the elevator. And of course, you hear the results in-universe of the quests you've completed.

Every time I have replayed the game I have seen or found something that I never saw before.

I admire the awesome amount of backstory and flavor found in simple things, like the write ups on each of the planets in the galaxy. Even if you can't survey or land on a planet, somebody took the time to write something interesting about it.

I replayed Virmire about six times in my first ME game. The sixth time, I actually completely restarted the game. I kept thinking I did something wrong. Who kills off a major character half way through the game with a simple dialog choice?

And I have never taken such measures to make sure a character looked exactly the same every time I played a game and it's sequels.

I played my first play through around a 13 months ago and it was fantastic. I have never seen such a story with depth and how even the choices you don't think make a difference really do because one never knows what the future holds for you. My one regret was not convincing Wrex on Virmire because I didn't understand the Morality bar but now I do.

I loved it from moment one. I think the opening cutscenes and conversations are what hooked me. If they had shortened the opening part and just started with dropping you on Eden Prime, I might not have been as impressed. Coming at it from an RPG background, with no real love of or experience with shooters, the gameplay felt odd at first but I grew to like it and never hated it. (I played it on PC which probably helped).

I think it was a good decision to begin the game with those cutscenes and conversations aboard the Normandy. It really established the cinematic feel and character depth that is what IMO makes the game worthwhile, not the combat. (Though the combat IS fun I think).

I did get frustrated during the post-Eden Prime Citadel shenanigans, just because I kept getting lost. But that didn't make me dislike the game itself, I felt it was actually appropriate that a first-time visitor to the Citadel should get lost sometimes. It just ticked me off that I kept forgetting where I was going.

I similarly was frustrated when I would travel to a high-level planet when I was low level and get my ass handed to me. Again, I wasn't frustrated at the game itself, but more at myself...I actually liked that there were some places that were too tough for me to go to. For example, the first planet I went to was where Wrex's family armor was (I didn't know this at the time) and Tonn Actus and his pirate gang wiped the floor with my low-level squad.

Other than the cinematic feel, good voice acting, complex characters and fascinating plot, what I really loved about Mass Effect was the sense of wonder and discovery as you explored the galaxy. I thought all the locations, from major plot areas like Virmire to random side-quest planets like Eletania and Antibaar, were very beautiful. I loved the color palettes and textural touches used in this game. Even the gunfire and explosions were beautifully rendered. That is something I missed in ME2 and ME3.

so far not a fan of some of the voice acting or those actors chosen.
