I initially tried a bit of ME3.. Then I suddenly found myself with 2 weeks of vacation.. And I ended up picking up all three games, cause I couldn't just start with ME3.

I must say ME1 really caught me the instant I started playing. The universe is just amazing and I really loved the story and I ended up loading ME2 right after I ended ME1. I think I spent like 6 days ending all 3 games, lol. Oh the inhumanity and depression I faced when ending number 3. I just felt so effing sad and I tried to tell myself it was okay, lol. No game has left me feeling like this. I don't search for games like this, really. I am just really happy I ended up experiencing this. Dem feels.

Safe to say that ME1 is one of, if not the best game, storywise I've ever played. It hooked me. It hooked me bad. This trilogy is so sweet maaaan.

And no, I don't care much for the shooting part not being polished in the first 2 games. They are fun, they are useable and obviously the story got me thru it. I'm a casual with love for good story.

Wow, first time playing Mass Effect... That puts it back... I'd completed Dragon Age Origins for the (I think) 4th time when I recalled that Bioware also had this other big horse they bet on, namely Mass Effect... Now, I'm not a shooter kind of girl (mostly because no one ever took the time to explain all the buttons to me^^) so I had a few reservations about it. But I decided to give it a shot anyway. erm... no pun intended here^^

So I went out, bought myself a PSN card and downloaded it.

Was completely cluseless when I started out (I like to play games blind, so the story can really kick in for me)... I made it past Eden Prime and to the Citadel and when the whole Spectre thing got thrown, I was completely into it. When Anderson gave me the Normandy, I had a nerd-squeal moment (I'm into starships, what can I do^^) and went off to save the galaxy^^

First time I played Feros (which was also the first major quest I did) it took me almost 7 hours completely and I killed off most of the colonists because I missed the box with the extra grenades^^ And yeah, it really took me nearly 7 hours and I died, a lot... That's what you get for going to Feros without having lots of experience on handling the Mako^^

I was rather disillusionized after that, and bought Dragon Age 2 in a fit (of broody piqué *lol*) and played through that several times.

About three weeks ago I finally decided to game through Mass Effect 1 again, this time really doing everything I could. Took me a week in total to play through and my game save for Femshep read 33 hours^^ I was blown away by the Endgame (god, Joker's maneuver is COOL!), watched the credits, started over again^^

And now I've got my hands on ME2, so I'll expect to be hooked until October, when DA:I comes out *rofl*

One of these days I'll gift my mum a cake, since she was the one that pointed me to Bioware^^

Anyway, that was my experience with Mass Effect^^ Still play that thing, I've started over with a different history, just to get new content^^

Sincerely,

CarrionFowl

Bought it, along with my 360, and was in love with the game from the opening screen.

Honestly there isn't a thing I dislike about the game. Things I would like improved to be sure but nothing I thought was bad....well maybe the automatic melee, pain in the bum when you got a charging Krogan in your face.

I love how the game didn't throw you straight into the action but made the time and effort to establish the universe before putting you into the events of Eden Prime.

I played in anticipation to playing ME2. I had seen some videos, but since I´m very methodical, I decided I had to try the original game first.

My first impression? Well, it does look like a next-gen game indeed. Hey, there was a time when ME1 visuals were considered astonishing. And to this day, I like its distinctive look. The textures in the clothings could be better, however.

I liked the character creation section, but I was unsure about the level of relevance it would have during my play.

At first, it seemed like an interactive space-opera heavily inspired by mainstream series like star wars and star trek, but I´ve learned to respect ME for its own universe and unique identity.

The 2 strongest points of the game for me were the companions and the main-story. They were so good in fact that made me overlook some bad aspects of the game in regards to pacing, gameplay, control, leveling, item managing.

This is how I´ll always remember ME1. The game that was filled with problems, had some severe defects, but that was also so pleasing in its good aspects that they somehow make up to the less effective aspects of the game.

I´m fully aware of ME1´s limitations and defects. But I simply enjoy it for the good it offers.

I waited until ME came out on Steam then got it and fired it up. First impression was WOW. First character was default male Shepard soldier w/Ashley. Still one of my favorites despite its shortcomings. I actually like several of the side planets because of the atmosphere and ambiance they provide.

Also wanted to play ME1 before ME2 so that factored into the decision to get ME1.

I went in knowing almost nothing about the game. I finished it in 28 hours stretched out over 2.5 miserable winter days. Then I started a new game right away.

Order of favorites:  ME2, ME1, ME3.

I could see there was a interesting story unfolding but the controls were kluge in the beginning.   The menus and weapon-shield mods were overly complex (ie: do you really need 40 different kinds & levels of ammunition? 30 different weapon mods? 15 shield mods?).  Eventually I got the hang of it.

I'm playing ME1 now and have a laptop sitting to my left (running Excel spreadsheet) just to keep up with everyone's stuff, plus all the missions (systems, stars, planets, etc).  In ME2 they corrected most of that and allowed you to use different keys to move your squadmates into position.  ME2 menus were more intuitive.    ME1 hacking was okay.   ME2 hacking got old.   ME3 no hacking -- could concentrate on story.

The CItadel in the beginning was a maze with too many unnecessary doors.  Now I know it like the back of my hand.  That complexity was reduced in ME2 & ME3.   My favorite mission was Feros with a mix of combat, helping others, and using the Mako.

1st impression?  On a scale from 1-10, I'd give it a 5.   2nd & subsequent playthroughs I'd give it 8-9.

One thing I´ve noticed about the pc version of mass effect 1 was that demiurge did a fantastic job. The loadings and the texture pop-up issue became much better (if you had a decent system to handle the game at the time, nowadays everyone has). The frame rate was also improved over the 360 version. The Mako, while still a pain, become less of a hurdle to control.

The items became easier to handle as well, and the new circular frogger mini-game is way easier than the QTE. And now you can issue orders for each member of the squad. If the AI will obey and not get killed or stuck is another matter.

Oh, and the game has very intuitive shortcuts for the keyboard.

Bioware dropped the ball with ME2 and ME3, both of them terrible PC ports aside from the better resolution and more stable frame-rate. I mean, how much could cost and how many men-hours would be required to implement short-cuts? Come on, They implement ridiculously unnecessary and longer to pull off vocal commands for the xbox version of ME3, but they could not in less than one hour implement basic keyboard-shortcuts for the pc?

ME1 is a true masterpiece game on the pc. A fine example of a PC port correctly adapted. ME2 and 3 are just lazy straight console ports. If not for the ME1 setting the precedence, pc players would have to endure the power wheel in me2 and 3 as well.

I feel the same way (also about Feros). Heck, when I first finished ME1, i started another playthrough right again and didn't even know why.

Nah, ME1 (PC) had shortcuts for things like inventory, map, skillpoints and journal.

Since ME2 there is only the only way to access these is to go over the pause screen/menu

I was NOT a fan of the elevators. But I also didn't use the transit system, so I slogged through it. God, I hated the elevators. You'd think that by the time we can cross the galaxy in a day or two, we might have made faster elevators.

Sure, and if/when there was an accident they'd drop even faster. No thanks, I'll take safe over fast any day.

Though honestly, I wish they'd just gone with stairs like in ME2.

KotOR and KotOR II were the last rpgs I played before Mass Effect. I totally agree.

I found it hard to get into ME1 at first, the Citadel part is my least favorite part of that game. I felt a bit constrained on the Citadel, I wanted to get into the action but first I had to run around doing errands for roughly 2 hours and endure long evelator rides that were sometimes funny but mostly daunting.

The pacing was off there. Would have been better to spread the Citadel missions through returning to it at intervals.

It also didn't help that I wasn't used to games with this much dialogue. I had played the Kotor series but I don't remember them being so dialogue heavy.

After the Citadel the game took off (apart from that horrible Mako).

My love for the trilogy started with ME2 though. Pacing was better, I liked the idea of forming a dirty dozen, the loyalty missions.

Having said that, the second ME1 playthrough was way better as I was fully engrossed in the story and accustomed to the gameplay.

I think every game in the trilogy has its merits though and the strength of the franchise lies not within a single game in but the total experience.

That's why there isn't a top 3 for me. ME1 was great story wise, ME2 felt better paced and less story driven and ME3 ties it all together (despite the ending).

I liked it. I was upset that Jenkins died.

I liked the armor, weapons and the variety of mods for weapons and armor.

I liked that I can have femshep be a b*t*h.

Wish Conrad Verner was a squadmate.

My thoughts were:

  • Elevators are slow in the future
  • Is that Deanna Troi I hear?
  • Virmire is a great vacation spot
  • I can't believe Ashley just killed Wrex!
  • NOW ASHLEY IS DEAD TOO WHAT DID I DO
  • I have to replay this immediately

I initially did not like Eden Prime but once I got to the Citadel I knew it was going to be one of my favorite games. Turned out I was right.

The inventory frustrated the hell outta me at first, I couldn't figure out how to equip my squad & myself. I quit ME1 the same day I started it, for several months, but the main menu music had captivated me.

I tried out the ME3 demo and I was blown away with how awesome it looked. By that time ME2's dev cycle had completed and all DLC were available, including Arrival. So I bought them all & started ME1 again and I was completely hooked. Although I hated the side missions with the Mako, Feros amazed me in its simplicity. I thoroughly enjoyed the level design, the ruined landscape and the awesomeness of the Prothean skyway. I love levels like it.

Noveria made me feel deliciously claustrophobic, and the identical layout of all areas frustrated the hell outta me. Virmire and the Base Assault battle theme blew me away and by that time I had already developed a crush for Maj......Staff Lieutenant Alenko . Safe to say I then developed the knack for naming a radioactive crater after Ashley Williams.

When I reached Ilos, I was completely mesmerized by the majestic beauty of the Prothean ruins. The battle theme creeped me the hell out, and the Ilos Archives mix of "Vigil" completely entranced me. No other game has immersed me as much as ME1 did. M4 II in the credits was the cherry on top and heightened my immersion.

Once I completed my first playthrough, I immediately fired up ME2 for the first time & continued. Blew me away even more. Loved the graphical & gameplay improvements. Omega & Afterlife in particular left me open-mouthed. The flame screens in the corridor was a WHOA moment.

Took me 2-3 different playthroughs to really get how everything works, lost Legion, Mordin, Thane & Jacob in my first suicide mission. But now I'm good ;)

I didn't know anything about the game other than friends were telling me to play it.  I'd never played an RPG before so it sat on my shelf for quite a while.

When I first played it, I thought 'this is crap', the weapons suck, especially the sniper rifle stability, and the whole 'power wheel' thing was new to me.

But I thought, "I'll give it a little longer" and by the time I got to the Citadel I was hooked on the story line. And it just kept getting better in every way.

Best game EVAH!.

Mass Effect was the first game I had played on the Xbox 360 back when I first had it apart from starting a bit of Fable 2. Before that on the original Xbox I had played Jade Empire and thought that game was amazing and like nothing I had ever played before, especially with all the choosing the good or bad side and talking to squad mates and having a romance in a game absolutely blew my mind!

So when I had a Xbox 360 my best friend said if you loved Jade Empire you should definitely play Mass Effect so I was of course totally on board after the world rocking I had from Jade Empire. And well when I first started up that game I couldn't get off it, I thought it was amazing! I was so hooked and loved all the character, especially Joker who continuously through the series has made me laugh! And of course it didn't take me long to start my crush on Kaidan haha!

But yeah long story short, absolutely loved the game and was lucky enough that I did not have to wait very long for Mass Effect 2 after playing it! :)

I actually thought Mass Effect was stupid. >.< I used to really like SI-FI but around 11 or so I lost interest in that genre as I grew older. I had played other BioWare titles (KOTOR,BG) but save for StarWars and Halo I was a fantasy fan through and through, and never loved Space SI-FI like my friends did. My friends ranted and raved about it for a while and I just nodded my head like "Yeah, sure whatever you say" *eyeroll*. It looked dumb, sounded stupid and I made fun of my friends for their obsession of all the characters.

THEN I PLAYED IT!!!!!!!! Boy was I wrong!! I fell in love with it and played the crap out of it. I do remember being very unhappy with the clunkyness of combat when I first started, but overall I just couldn't put it down! And after a while it became/still is my favorite game. It also reignited my love for SI-FI that I hadn't had since I was like 10, but that's for another time.

The first time I played?  I never saw a trailer to this game and none of my friends ever played it much less heard of it and it was around 2008.  I have played Bg2, KOTOR 1 & 2, and Jade Empire, so I figured why not?

I loved the galaxy map; I liked exploring what was available to travel to and reading the planet descriptions.  I also loved landing in the Mako on a planet I never been to and right away looking at the sky to see the stars, moon(s), and/or color of the sun.  The Citadel was just as amazing for me as it was for Ashley and Kaiden, a city in space!  Meeting Wrex for the first time was mind blowing.  I never seen an alien like that, reminded me of a dinosaur with a mouth that could take your head off in one bite.

Right off the bat, however, I was annoyed by the gunplay but pleased with the biotics.  Once I leveled up skills in specific weapons for the squad, I enjoyed the combat more.  It's hard for me to replay Me1 now, I feel like I exhausted the magic by replaying it too much and knowing every mission thread and possibility.  What once was alien and fantastic has become familiar and routine.  I want the next Mass Effect game to re-capture as much of that magic in Me1 that I enjoyed the first time I played it.
