I just got this game, wanting to play it, but it won't acknowledge the second disk is in the CD drive. I don't think it's the system requirements, as I am equal to or above the recommended system requirements. I did buy the game second hand, but the disks are in very good shape, nothing but some very light scratches. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, I've wanted to play this game for a long while now.

Could it be that the games doesn't like the type of operating system? I have Windows XP Service Pack 3.

It was designed to run on windows os's from 98 to xp. I have gold (+HotU, and later Diamond on disk and from GOG) and the only installation problem I had on XP was with the serial number (the D's looked like 0's). In all probability your problem is down to the surface of the disk. Do you get any error messages or messages from your firewall/anti-virus? If the latter, try disconnecting your pc from the internet temporarily and disabling both just for the time it takes to install.
Hope this has been of use.

You could also try copying all the files from the disks to the same folder on your hard-drive and running setup from that folder. I had to do this for my copy because one of the disks got corrupted.
