Hello all,

This is my first post so take it easy on me. I searched the forums and found a few threads about this issue, but none of them seem to have any answers and it didn't seem like they were going anywhere so I decided to create this thread in hopes of getting this issue some attention.

When I first played the game I was playing on my onboard video since I didn't have a video card and it ran fine. I had no issues at all. Since then I upgraded to an ATI HD 4870 X2. But when I run the game now, It will get to the main menu and start locking up/freezing/stuttering. If I manage to actually select something, like new game for example, it will either crash during the intro or if I get to the character creation screen there will be a black bar across the the middle of the screen covering most of it. It will crash to desktop shortly after arriving to this screen. If I try to load a game or continue the current game, the screen will go black while trying to load and then it will crash.

I managed to actually run the game in windowed mode, but in full screen, even if I have it set to the lowest video settings as possible, it will always crash.

I have checked with some friends and they are not having any issues running the game. One of them even has the same card as me. I don't think it is my video card that is damaged because I can run other games just fine.

I have tried updating to the latest patch (1.02a) and I have the latest ATI driver (9.12).

Is anyone else having this issue? What can I do to fix this?

My Build:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
MSI DKA790GX Platinum
AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition
4GB of DDR2
ATI HD 4870 X2
750w PSU

Did you run the configuration utility in between the old IGP and trying to run the game after the VGA upgrade?

I've done so between a card change of my own, and saw no new problems (none at all since the install, still).

Yes I did run the configuration utility after installing the new card. Actually this is where I manage the games settings since I can't do it in game.

I have even tried starting the game in windowed mode and then changing to full screen once it's running, but it will crash right then and there.

I've got a 4870x2 on a crapper processor than you and it is super smooth with everything turned up. You'll love it. :-)

When you installed your new card, did you uninstall the old drivers? Disable the old device in BIOS?

If you go to the Event Viewer in your Control Panel and look under Applications, do you see any red X's in there?

Make sure that your in-game resolution is the same as your desktop resolution. My friend had this same problem with his HD 4870 and this was the first thing I attempted when troubleshooting for him and he hasn't had an issue since.

Yes I uninstalled the old drivers and changed the VGA setting in the BIOS from Onboard to PCIE. And as far as the resolution is concerned, I have a 17in LCD and the desktop is set to 1280X1024. The game was already set at this resolution before I installed the new card. I have also tried every other resolution as well.

I have not looked in the event viewer though. If there is something there, it might point me in the right dirrection.

Thanks for the tips guys, but I have tried a lot of the basic trouble shooting steps. Including some of the suggestions found in these forums (which is how I found out it would play in windowed mode).

I am not sure what to think at this point, because I don't think it is a driver issue and I don't think it's an issue with the game. I also don't think it's an issue with the card physically, since it plays other games like Resident Evil 5 and Dead Space just fine.

I'm starting to think it's my video card. I tried playing Assassin's Creed an the game crashes as well.
