I mean I'm now at lothering as a level 6 human rogue. I have 17 cun, 12 str, the all dex. Somehow I miss a lot. My damage is kinda sucky too.

Its nightmare mode by the way.

It has to do with a number of things. First, DW talents give a +5 attack bonus, early on that's a big difference, archers don't get that. Second, Rogues start with lower attack than Warriors. Third, if you shoot from beyond your bow's maximum range, you get a penalty to attack. Finally, the weapons you find early on for melee also have +attack, the family sword and enchanted dagger come with +4, as does the shield. None of the bows you find has an attack bonus. So at the early levels, yes, you miss a lot more with an archer than you do with a melee character.

Yeah the weapons could have probably helped. Well after Lothering I could easily get Mage's Eye.

But at what level would I start to see some kickassery?

Usually after you get Arrow of Slaying and Master Archer ... so around lvl 12+ depending on what kind of talents you choose. Oneshotting mages is fun :P For other targets do a shattering shot+arrow of slaying

As Erakleitos said probably around level 12, but not because of Arrow of Slaying. You want to get Far Song asap (has +10 attack on it) plus any other gear with bonuses to attack. Missing really sucks :(

Ok. One more question. Is it better to get AoS early than scattershot? I will probably be using Sten, the Royal Bastard, and Morrigan/Wynne as healer.

In nightmare mode i think you're lucky if scatter shot stun lasts more than 1 second... in hard mode is less than 2 seconds.

Edit: but it's useful to disrupt spellcasting

I prefer scatter shot to arrow of slaying. However, I also prefer ranger pets over scatter shot. It really depends on your group setup and whether or not you have someone to quickly disable mages. If not, you might want AoS first to quickly get rid of 1 mage.

Yes.

Archers are a lot like two-hand warriors, their damage is tied to their skills more than anything else. Until you get Aim, Scattershot, Arrow of Slaying, Critical Shot, and Master Archer (i.e. pretty much everything in the Archery Tree) you're mostly stuck using auto attacks that, especially with the dexterity bugs, just aren't that strong. You also have to contend with the extra attack requirements, many foes have a higher missle defense than melee defense based on the stat 'missle deflection' found on shields.

I'd say so. I also think physical positioning is critical to the success of an archer.

1) move your party as a group and always have your tank at the front. If an ambush is sprung on you, you don't want your archer in the front.

2) using 'hold position' command frequently, and let the enemy come to you. This gives you a few seconds to get free shots. Hold the line with your melee. stuns, warcrys, mind blast with mages, etc.

3) regulate your hostility. you want your archer to have minimum hostility, and your tank to take all the attention. medium armor or less, belts, amulets. etc- everything that reduces hostility. Your archer is at their best when undisturbed.

Archery is definitely more tactics oriented- not the AI scripting mind you, but your actual strategy in how you approach the combat. The bonus of this that when you hold your line and let the enemy come to you, you never step on traps.

Yeah they start off slow, but I am now level 11 and things are way better. I can scattershot then arrow of slay and those 2 back to back give my party an advantage from the start.

You'll definitely pick up steam as you go. I found my archer somewhat difficult/frustrating early on (though teching straight to AoS helped a lot), but many of the late game fights with an archer were even easier than with an arcane warrior. The high dragon and archdemon fights, for example, were practically over before they started.
