Ashley Vs. Kaiden Virmire

All right, I know there are about a hundred of these threads, but they all seem to be evenly divided 50/50 when it comes to responses about who to save.
Now I've played all three games more than once, but I realized that I've never actually kept Ashley alive.
I'm currently replaying Mass Effect 1 and I'm at Virmire, having to choose between saving Ashley and saving Kaiden.
Now, is there any reason to save Ashley? Does her relationship as a sister grow in the upcoming games? I know what happens on Horizon regardless of it being Kaiden or Ashley, I'm simply curious about her character growth/femshep sister relationship in ME3.
Here are some details.
1) I'm playing a (mostly) paragon femshep infiltrator
2) I don't care about Kaiden's or Ashley's personality. I like them both the same, so this does not affect the choice.
3) I am NOT romancing Kaiden. I'm saving all my love for everyone's favorite Turian.
4) I don't use either of them very often in the game. I'm usually hanging out with Garrus and Wrex in my team.
5) I can send either Ashley or Kaiden with Kirrahe's team at this point, so there's no definite person guarding the bomb yet
Any thoughts on who to save? Is Ashley worth it? Or should I just go my usual route and save Kaiden?
(Please don't turn this thread into a "Ashley is a total b***h save Kaiden" or a "Kaiden is a boring f**k save Ashley" thread. As I've said, I like both their personalities equally but rarely use them in my squad)

So do you want a purely Mass Effect perspective, or a metagaming one? I might not be the best to answer since I play manShep. But, if you are purely going through ME it probably depends more on who has what role. And even then it depends on if you think it would be better to protect a bomb that is already armed, or control the AA tower until Normandy can pick you up. As far as the person themselves, it is hard to say that one is worth saving over the other solely based on their merits. You could try to be purely practical can claim that Kaidan as a biotic is more valuable to your squad than Ash, but on the other hand if you have Liara and if you are a biotic you might want more combat capability.
From a metagaming perspective, they are interchangeable in ME2. However, I would say that Kaidan's conversations are slightly superior in ME3, at least from manShep perspective. And this is coming from someone who has romanced Ash in the majority of my ME3 games. While Ash has good development in ME1 (I actually think she is one of the more well done characters in that game), I think that her arc in ME3 was mishandled. It is ok, but some of the things are out of character, IMO, unless you make certain assumptions.
In any event, there shouldn't be a clear cut answer. That was the point of the choice. It is Kobyashi Maru, and you can't reprogram the simulator.
If you want to know why I always chose Ash though... it is why there are rules against fraternization.

Haha, thanks. I usually choose Kaidan because I romance him in the first game (though I tend to move on to Garrus regardless). I think I'll keep Ash alive this time around, just to get a different experience. I've heard her character build in the last game isn't good, but I'm going to risk it. Thanks for the opinion.capn233 wrote...
What a coincidence, I have never saved Kaidan. Do have a "mirror universe" game in ME3 that I created so that I could get Kaidan's bonus powers.

For first playthrough, I would go with Ashley because there is surprisingly a lack of Soldier classees in ME3/ME2(even though it is the iconic class). ME3 you are basically stuck with James(Jersey Shor guy) and Garrus who really is more of a Tech Sniper.

I considered this, but I plan on a small romance with Kaidan before I kill him off. I guess I could always reject him when he comes to the cabin but eh.....The Grey Ranger wrote...
You could always make a save before you get one killed, especially if Virmire is your last story line planet. That way you can save both one at a time and have both ready for import presuming you're going to continue the trilogy.
I might do this.

I won't use Ashley that much anyway. I was curious about her character development more than anything else.J4mes wrote...
Ash becomes a Soldier in ME3, Kaiden becomes a Biotic. You get Liara/Samara/Javik as Adepts, Kaiden really doesn't fit much a role if you are already a Biotic. Ashley is nice if you plan to be a Sniper, since you can have her hang back and snipe with you. Or switch to Assault Rifles and be a distraction.

I've played the series multiple times, but have never kept her alive. I think I will this time around just to make things seem different.

But IMHO Ashley drew the short straw in ME3. Kaidan has more dialogue and more interaction with the Normandy crew, should you take him aboard. ME3 had great character interaction on board the ship, but Ashley never does much. And that's before you get to the horribly inappropriate LA makeover they gave her.
On the plus side she does have a few touching moments on the Citadel, and though Ash and Kaiden interact with you pretty much the same in ME2, I always thought it suited Ash more.
Oh, and her Marksman ability is broken in ME3, which is a pain.
So many reasons to pick Kaiden...
