You are very welcome. I cannot take any of the credit though. I also thank everyone out there that did the research because that made it so much easier for me to think it out.
Just happy to help.

I understand what you are saying about giving EA / Bioware a break, but I do know individuals who do write code and develop games...they are they ones that informed of the new platform and the history of how EA / Bioware are known for games to have issues......
Everyone knows that it is difficult and I even understand the delays with the releases of the new DLC, all I am asking for is to inform your public. Not for us gamers to have to come to forums and make calls to people who don't work for the company to inform us.

I cleared my cache and loaded a couple of different save files that were luckily right before I unlocked the specializations for Arcane Warrior and Blood Mage. I shut the system down after I unlocked them again and loaded the game back up. So far everything seems to be back in working order. Thanks for the advice.

I cleared cache, loaded the save game, restarted the game and loaded the game again and it worked. I guess that's the one good thing about having EA keep track of the game... I just hope that 10 years down the line when the server is gone the game is still playable.

I'm getting majorly fed up with my specializations locking up every time. Yesterday I went through quite some effort to get the duelist spec (after Ranger, Bard, AND Assass were all locked up again with no means left to unlock them), and wanted to spend one of my 2 points in there as soon as I leveled. However, I had to save&quit last night, and now that I'm playing the game again I find on my next level up that even duelist is closed off again!! This is just great. 40 hours of playtime and my Rogue is screwed because there's no way left for me to get her any specializations. Unless I level up a whole new character, taking several hours to reach places like Denerim, and/or grind rep again with the people involved.
When this happened the first time, I thought it was just an unlucky bug with the Return to Ostagar DLC. But this ruddy bug has happened to me over 3(!!!) times already, and it's really pissing me off. I'm getting this close to throwing my Xbox out of the window.
EDIT: While at first I assumed that Wicked's post was about the PC (since I had never heard of an Xbox having something like a cache, and I had to use Google to find out how on earth I had to go about it), after writing this post I found out that it was in fact the Xbox he was talking about. I followed his instructions, and it partially solved the problem.. the rest I was able to unlock relatively easily, by loading random saved games and checking reputation/tomes/etc, hoping for a file that had (nearly) enough reputation but not yet had the 'teach me spec x' conversation or bought the tome.
Wicked, many thanks for your solution. Although I still find it pathetic that it had to come from a player instead of the developers of the game itself - they screw something up and pretend they're not at home when people knock on the door about it.

Hell, i can't even re-unlock them, and soon as i turn my game off they get relocked. Even ones i just unlock again.
I did the same thing - spent ages going through various saves files and unlocking everything again that didn't need a book that is no longer there. Feeling very self satifies turned the game off only to be surprized when i next turned it on
The dev have said that a fix is already in the testing stage so hopefully it'll all be better soon

I'll add my thanks to Wicked for the help - did the solution from page 7 and it seems to have completely solved the issue. I even turned the system off and back on after it seemed to be fixed just to check it didn't relock and it hasn't, so big, big thanks

Don't do that! There is nothing wrong with the dlc it is the patch that is causing the spec. relock. Read p.7 particularly Wicked's efforts. Delete the cache and the dlc stays, the glitched patch goes. The servers can then correct the prob.

so does this walk through allow me to gain the recruiter achievement as well as the one pertaining to the murder of 1000 dark spawn? Because I've met the qualifications for both of them and cannot seem to unlock them (including getting the secret companion). The weird thing is i got the level 20 warrior one just a few hours ago, so not all the achievements break, just the two i mentioned so far.
edit: it seems to have fixed the issue with the recruiter achievement. woohoo. thank you to all the techies in this communitiy who help out the average gamer!

I just bought the game a few days ago, and downloaded the title update before starting a game. After about 24 game hours, I figured something had to be wrong (I can't spend my specialization points on my Rogue- they're all locked), so I search here and find this thread.
Since I have no save games prior to the patch, am I just screwed on this playthrough? Man, that would be weak. Here I am killing every single thing I can find to level my guys up, and I might be stuck finishing the game with no specialization.

Have you unlocked any of the specializations? If not, they should be locked. The book based specializations will all unlock automatically at level 14 if you have the newest update (which should automatically download if you are signed in to Xbox Live). The non-book based specializations (Blood Mage and Reaver) will only unlock if you complete the quests that unlock them.
