i'm having a real difficult time setting up my party this play around last time i was the tank but this time i thought i give a city elf rogue a shot.
my tank seems to be the first to fall now that i'm not the tank.. i thought maybe shale would do better so i'm trying to get him but allister keeps messing up and i can't get anywhere with him
My current team now is
Sten
Morrgian
Allister
Liliania
Dog
setting up my party.

My Intial plan is since i finshed Lothering getting the golem then either go to the circle tower or to the Warden's keep since i recently got that.
i have a few goals for this one run through go
Sleep with Morrgian
Unlock Specialized
Assassin
Reaver
Blood Mage
Sprite healer
Arcane warrior
Get Logain in my party.
(i was thinking of getting the golems and the werewolves and templars on my side this time around to)

At this point there shouldnt be a huge difference between your PC tank and Alistair.
I figure he should be level 7 or 8 So you should have had enough time to get him taunt and/or threaten, if not you should be pretty close.
So since the skills are there, or going to be soon, the only thing left is the tactics. For that what you want to do is think of what you were or would be doing on your tank and try to emulate those actions as best you can. For a few examples:
Self: Health < 50% >>Use Least potent healing potion
Self: Health <25% >> Use most potent healing potion
Self: being attacked by Ranged attack: Activate Shield Cover
Self: being attacked by melee attack: Activate Shield Defense
Enemy At short range >>Taunt
Try to think about your actions in terms of a program. For instance, "when I see Sten, my melee dps character, pull agro I like to use taunt to pull the agro back to myself". So... Sten: being attacked by melee attack >>use Taunt
I dont know if you play on the PC, but you can use the Advanced Tactics 2.8 mod to add more functions to the tactics system, or even modify the exptable.gda file to give you more tactic slots at each level.

I found Shale to be a better tank at least in the start Al didn't seem to do well tanking until much later on. If you do still use him try to get his approval up real high to get bonus con as soon as you can. But Shale with Stoneheart tree is an awsome tank. However if you choose Shale you may not want to bring her to the fight with branka as siding with branka when shale is in your party will lose you your tank.

You cannot unlock blood mage with anyone but a mage.
