Luckily I didn't read or hear too much about ME3 before playing the game. I can see how Vega would create a presumption of stereotype though, that was pretty much my first reaction I guess, but I quickly came around. Decent writing, and decent VA by FPJ saw to that.

Same here, didn't know anything about him before going into ME3 (stayed spoiler free 3 years, as I've only finished ME3 in February this year 
), and I was surprised we had someone who first opposed Shepard and insisted on going back to Earth instead of following the commands, and yeah, he did look like your typical meat head. I found him very sassy at first, especially also in the first conversation prior to the sparring, but he had me at Loco, and from there I really liked him very quick.
And now he became my fav out of all the squaddies, ahaha.
