Funny you say that since Vega's VA is fluent in Spanish.

Sounds like the same situation for the British voice actor they got to do Hawkes accent that everyone likes to claim is done by someone faking a britsh accent.

Vega tries too hard to get along with everyone. He's always pretending to be buddy buddy with everyone he talks to. He's too afraid to offend or speak his mind (not counting the times he's too stupid to realize what he's saying).

This means I don't really know him, and therefore don't trust him. People who try to get along with everyone make me uncomfortable.

I never disliked him. I simply felt that he was introduced haphazardly, knew next to nothing about his environment and seemed a bit uppity to challenge Commander Shepard on his own ship. I felt that a new squadmate should have been either a Batarian or a Salarian, who could help teach about their species cultures, like Liara, Wrex, Tali and Garrus before them.

Same thing was said about Greg Ellis who did the voice of Disciple in KotOR II. Anyway, I loved James from the get go.

He definitely grew on me. Before I was kind of lazy to even bother getting to "know" him since that meant I had to go aaaaaall the way down to the shuttle bay to hear him say brief auto dialogue things where I just went down there to keep Cortez from crashing in the end. But in this DLC he was a lot more fun and now I actually enjoy having him around. He's a flirt and when you call him out he's so awkward and embarrassed haha. Yeah I like him~

Maybe he is just one of those people who genuinely gets along with most people. He never seems like he's hiding something and when he has a problem, he voices it (leaving Earth).

I've always liked Vega. Hated the writers intent, hated how hes strongarmed into the game, but as a character i always liked him.

Could have something to do with reading a bunch of Fanfics dealing with Shepards incarceration and giving a proper intro to Vega.

It's not possible to get along with everyone. It's dishonest. People by nature have their own set of values and morals. A lot of people don't match those, and even oppose them. You can only get along with everyone if you don't bother to truly get to know someone or care about what kind of person they are or how they treat others.

Vega laughs at Javik's "joke" despite having no idea what it means. That's dishonest.

The polite thing would be to say "I'm guessing that's something I would have had to have been there for, cause I am definately missing something."

I respected Vega at first for having the guts to snap at Shepard...then he turned into a get along with everyone wet noodle with no substance. Hated him since.

Liked him as a character. I was surprised that he actually was more than his appearance.

I hate what he stands for (more appropriately, what the writers wanted him to stand for), but I never felt he was forced as a character.

He is, in essence, Shepard's protege. The game needed to give him a better into, and I think it would have been an interesting point to see that early on, he resents Shepard for what happens to his squad:

During the sparring session between Vega and Shepard, it should have ramped up in intensity as Vega revealed that while he was blaming himself for his squad's death, he was also blaming Shepard for making his their death meaningless.

Aw man, he's one of my favorite characters from ME3.

Yeah the guy is a total bro, but he means well.

I didn't hate him, I was somewhat suspicious when they showed us a picture of him before the game released, but Vega and Kaidan were my go to team for my first play through and since then I really liked that guy.

Never liked him. Even if he was introduced properly he's dull but when the game goes "Oh here's some new guy. You met between the last game and this one and are best of buds now" NOPE. I resented the assumed friendship, the insubordination, the nicknames and the inappropriate flirting. He also struck me as an unnecessary rehash of Jacob's drank-the-Koolaid-marine-to-the-core-hooah character, especially as Jacob was pretty much brushed off to the side for ME3.
If you didn't get XP for clicking on him and listening to his canned dialogue while running around the room I'd never have talked to him at all.

It is possible, just extremely rare.
I'm not saying Vega is one of those people who can get along with everyone, but it doesn't mean he's being "false" by attempting to appeal to everyone. He had no idea what Javik's joke meant, but he attempted to appeal to Javik by half-heartedly claiming he understood it. Only thing is, it wasn't a joke and Javik was just messing with him.
That doesn't make him a suck up or a wet noodle, it simply defines his characteristics. He wants to befriend Javik even if he has no idea of what Javik is talking about.

His characteristics define him as a dishonest wet noodle.

Maybe the places we grew up in are differant, but I was raised that laughing at a joke that you don't get is rude and dishonest.

If I find out a "friend" of mine has only been a friend just cause I usually stop being friends with them. Javik is funny be he's a heartless SOB who I would want nothing to do with. Joker is generally loyal and honest but suffers from immaturity issues and toilet humor. Tali is loyal, sincere, and relatively mature but has emotional family issues.

These three characters are like night and day from each other. I don't like Javik, and I don't like Tali. I respect them both, but not particularly like. I like joker, and respect him. I would hang out with him.

Vega likes them all and would hang out with them all? BS...he's pandering, and I can't stand it. It also drives me effing crazy that his response to deep, thoughtful questions is "Yeah, I get that."

No, you don't get that, or you'd actually say something. That's such a cop out.

Can't stand Vega. He's a meathead d-bag whose parents never taught him how to be honest with people.

Vega seemed like a really shallow and undeveloped character. I couldn't relate to him because he was just a totally generic soldier. The loco/lola nickname thing also feels really forced and insincere.

In general, Vega was more of a template than a fully realized character. I don't think Citadel did much to improve this.

Jacob on the other hand, I thought was a lot cooler in Citadel DLC than any other time in the trilogy. Jacob needed to have a better sense of humor, and crack more jokes in ME2, and he would have been a better squadmate. His jokes and sense of humor in Citadel are a good example of how a flat character like ME2's Jacob can still be improved on.

The only time I didn't particularly like Vega was when he was a character bio on a page.

It would have been easy to fall into the jarhead cliche but it never really went there.

FPJ, and the writers, did a great job on the character IMO.

I never had a problem with his character. I like him well enough. Now, that being said, would I have preferred an original squad member from me1 or 2 instead of him? Yes I would.

that horrible Spanish of his

It's the dialect. When I speak spanish I sound from someone from Andalucia mixed with your typical Gibraltarian crap. Instead of 'si' we say 'hi.' We also don't pronounce half of the 's's in the language.

OP

I've always liked Vega, and I liked Jacob. Never understood the hate for both of them. Can't BioWare have the 'average but earnest' squad member on the list?

I always liked James.

If nothing else he at least comes off as a honest type, probably the most realistic military man in the game I would say.
Couple that with a bit of a amateur Robin Hood and you have a big bulky charmer.

That handshake he gives in Citadel DLC when he visits is just the cherry on top of the ice cake for me, Vega's a bro 100%
